It had been somewhat tedious, learning the names and faces of the new dogs surrounding him. Rebuilding the Ah’mir from nearly scratch was arduous, but the fruits of his (and his clan’s) labors were finally coming to fruition. The shilah’mira seeds that they’d planted had begun to sprout under their exacting care, and come springtime they’d no doubt be flourishing into the familiar buds that the gang were so known for. In the meantime, he was content to reinforce his new territory and recruit where he could.
Not all canna were new, however. Two had followed him from the time before; the damnable Askabi who had dared to rebel, and a far more trustworthy beast: Eliri’hassi. Kodi had joined the Ah’mir before they had been named such, not too long after Damien himself– back when Orion had still been the dog in charge. The two had been paired together often to raid the territories of others, both for sabotage and reconnaissance, right up until Greyo’miera himself stepped up into the role of chief. There he’d remained through the years, earthquake and beyond, and with so many new dogs underpaw he thought it high time to select a general of his own.
And who better than the dog that had been at his side longer than all the rest?
Few could hide from his keen nose unless they were trying, so it was with little trouble that Damien tracked Eliri’s scent through the halls of their vast greenhouse home. ”What news, hali?” The li’canna greeted the smaller male, scuffing a paw against the earth as he approached so as not to take the scrappy canine by surprise. ”Anything new to report? You patrolled the river border this morning, if I remember correctly.” He flicked his tail, a casual gesture that belied the way he observed Kodi with a keen eye. He would ascertain the security of his home before informing the other brute of his promotion.

Earlier during the morning, Kodi had went out on a patrol to scout out the river border, looking for anything interesting or out of the ordinary. Thankfully, he didn’t find anything suspicious, and instead found herbs he figured would be useful to bring back for the clan. The past weeks had been by no means easy, considering Chief Damien was faced with the task of rebuilding the Ah’mir purely from scratch. Kodi admired the dog for putting so much effort into repairing the Ah’mir, and he had made sure to put in his own effort too.
Kodi had been part of the Ah’mir for an incredibly long time, and as a result, he and Greyo’miera had formed a strong friendship. He was the dog that knew Kodi best, and in turn, Kodi was the dog that knew Damien best.
Kodi had returned to the greenhouse at some point to relax and unwind, and it hadn’t taken long for Damien to locate him. There was no doubt that he had a keen nose. Very few could hide from him.
“What news, hali? Anything new to report? You patrolled the river border this morning, if I remember correctly.”
Kodi greeted the Chief with a characteristic smug smile. “Greetings, Greyo’miera. I did indeed patrol the river border, and am pleased to say that there was nothing out of the ordinary. I even found some herbs to bring back for the clan.”

”Good, good. There have been ro’canna sniffing around the river lately— it’s for the best that none of them have gotten too curious.” Greyo’miera said with an undertone of satisfaction, an assured look upon his face. Just because he was recruiting didn’t mean that any dog was welcome to waltz into Ah’mir land at their leisure.
”Speaking of herbs,” The black beast continued, ”We have enough dogs that I think it’d be prudent to station a guard at the shilah’mira room entrance. I’d just loathe a repeat of Askabi’s treachery. Best to make it as inaccessible as possible.” He curled his lip, fangs gleaming as he remembered the filthy taste of the mutt’s blood. Everything canna, from fur to flesh to blood, tasted abhorrent. It was a shame that a dog’s main weapon was located in the same place as their tongues.
”I want to put you in charge of this, Eliri’hassi. In fact, I’d like you to run things in my stead when I’m preoccupied with… other tasks. I name you Rali’Eliri, my general. I expect you’ll wield the power wisely.” Even if Kodi weren’t wise, Damien knew he was at the very least cunning. Cunning enough to know where to draw lines in the sand, and cunning enough to look at Askabi and know the price of betrayal.
”What say you?”

Seeing the Chief pleased was a relieving sensation for Kodi. Li'Greyo was not a dog to cross, which Kodi felt was quite evident. He had also noticed that there had been other canna lurking about, but they thankfully hadn't stepped too far. If Kodi had found any trespassers, he would ensure they knew they weren't supposed to be there.
Following Damien's following sentence, Kodi cringed at the sound of Askabi's name. What had happened was completely treacherous.
"That Askabi..." Kodi growled under his breath.
What Damien said next honestly caught Kodi by slight surprise. Now, he was naming Kodi the General of the Ah'mir. He was...honored that Greyo'miera considered him to be worthy enough for such a role, and he was determined to make the Chief happy.
"What say you?"
Kodi gave a respectful bow of his head. "Li'Greyo, thank you for considering me for this role. I would be glad and proud to assist you in taking charge of the Ah'mir. You are an individual I highly respect, so this is an honor."

Something cruel and ruthless grew in his mind as he witnessed the aggression that Askabi’s name evoked in his most loyal. It had been his right as chief– no, as canna– to discipline the traitor as he saw fit, strip him of name and title and reduce him to lesser than. It was the wild way, and any li’canna with a spine would have done the same in the face of such treachery.
However, relieving him of his eye, taking such vicious pleasure in seeing someone who had crossed him reduced to such a state– that was all Damien. He was a good leader, a good tactician, was even capable of good deeds– but he was not, at his core, a good dog. A good dog would not find joy in seeing derision for Askabi on the faces of others. But oh, he certainly did.
Kodi’s next words soothed the tumultuous tangle of darker emotions in his chest, keeping the tide of cruelty at bay for the time being. ”Wonderful.” He grinned, wide like a shark. ”I knew you would be up to the task.” He hadn’t had any doubt that Eliri’hassi would be willing, but he understood that there were some canines in the world who preferred to remain out of the spotlight, so to speak. He had been convinced already of his new general’s cleverness, but had not been sure if authority was something the smaller male would seek. He was glad that his hunch had been correct.
”I believe this calls for a celebration. A new home, a new land, and a new general— there should be enough flowers safe from the winter frost to grind into powder. I believe we may be overdue for a Color Run.” He suggested with a single wag of his tail. ”It will be a good way to introduce the newer canna to our traditions too.” He nodded, convinced. ”Put together a patrol of dogs to go out and collect flowers. I’ll help whoever remains behind to grind them once you return.”
Then, he added thoughtfully, ”And bring that Kahru pup with you as well. Even a babe can find a flower, and it will be good to make the ren feel useful.” Better to instill loyalty and community in them young, after all.
