Date: Feburary 18th; Snow; Week 6 of Akoda's pregnancy
Akoda was well into her pregnancy, a proud expecting mother who adored her unborn puppies with all her heart. Her stomach was now enlarged and firm. Also, from time to time there was puppy movement she could feel, and others could see, especially including Akoda. She had a loss of appetite and ate less than usual. The extra pounds made it more difficult to hunt, and she didn't want to over exert herself. Plus it would be better to stay in and close to camp for the safety of her litter. She was excited to be a first time mother, and never felt lonely due to the little bundles of life she was carrying. It was snowing and Akoda was lucky enough to catch a squirrel. She walked in the greenhouse and dropped the rodent on the prey stockpile. She wasn't hungry at the moment and wanted to get some rest. She walked over to her resting area made of soft stuff and blankets. She lay down but didn't sleep. She instead watched it snow outside from the safety of the greenhouse. Akoda had promised Damien that she would raise this litter to be strong members of the clan. Now though, she just needed to keep herself well fed and safe so she could deliver healthy young. Soon the gang would be filled with brand new lives who would bring strength to Ah'mir.

★⸻𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒊⸻★ He should have minded his business, but as he watched Akoda drop some prey on the kill-pile and settle herself for a rest--he couldn't help it as his paws wandered closer to her. He eyed the large she-dog, and her ever-growing belly. He could already imagine the horrible little creatures that would be born from her. They were partially Damien after all, and something told him that no matter how great Akoda was, their father's nature would surely corrupt them.
He hesitated nearby, wondering just how this situation was about to go down.
"You should be nervous." Well fuck, maybe that wasn't the best way to start this conversation. He cleared his throat and tried again. "What I mean... Damien is not the dog you think he is." His tail remained down, but not tucked. He was almost trying to stare into her soul--to make her understand what he was saying. She would likely think he was just some greasy brute stuffing his nose in something that wasn't his event.
He shuffled his paws uncomfortably. "Damien will not help you raise your young, nor will he teach him the values of a good dog."

Damien had been largely uninterested in the development of Akoda’s pregnancy thus far, but the night prior he’d looked at her– really looked at her– and at that moment, by pure coincidence, he’d seen the subtlest of movements against her abdomen. The smallest of kicks from a whelp not yet born, but it had caught his attention; made the impending birth realer, somehow, and so it was with a self–amused prowl that he sought her out on this day.
He narrowed his eyes when she emerged into the large structure of the greenhouse with a squirrel in her maw. Surely she hadn’t caught it herself? Mothers this far along were meant to be pampered, he was reasonably sure, and most of his rank were loyal if not kindhearted. Had no one offered to catch her lunch? Or, he wondered, did they assume that the duty fell to him? But it would seem that she had caught it for the clan rather than herself, and he felt a brimming sense of approval. Putting the clan first even when she was so far along? He couldn’t have asked for a better sense of duty.
He would tell her, today, to retire until the litter was born. Just because he didn’t care for their rearing didn’t mean he wanted the young ren to be endangered. The chief stalked forward, drawing to a halt just outside the room when the most unexpected of dogs approached her first. The mere sight of him made his lip curl in an expression of abject disgust; what business did Askabi have with the soon-to-be mother?
”The values of a good dog?” He snarled, emerging into the room proper when he caught the tail-end of Askabi’s words. ”And what would you have them learn, Askabi? To skulk in the shadows? To thieve from beneath their chief’s noses? To steal away in the night? Tell me, what honor would you bestow among my children?” He loomed to his full height, the pearly gleam of his teeth a blatant threat as he came to a halt a few feet away.
”Rather than bring your grievances up with the higher ranks, rather than challenge me in honorable combat as the traditions of canna dictate, you preferred to act as an opportunistic raccoon, and so you were treated as such. Do not mistake yourself for some pitiable victim. The only thing pitiable about you is your cowardice.” He threw the gauntlet down like a challenge, holding the male’s gaze for a moment longer before he turned to Akoda.
”Do not listen to his words, my dear. I will ensure, at the least, their safety and wellbeing. But I doubt that this is a concern to you.” Then, pointedly, with a warning glance towards Askabi, ”This was, after all, discussed in detail from the get-go.”

Akoda was comfortable in her resting area until that damned Askabi dared to approach her. Akoda felt nothing but hatred and contempt for the pathetic excuse of a canine. How dare he approach her in such a casual way! Her temper only grew once those damned words left his mouth. She could see the Askabi lost an eye. Perhaps he should lose his tongue as well. With his lonely position and status, he had no right to speak of Damien the way he did. In fact, no dog should speak of Damien in such a way. He was the strong leader of the great Ah'mir clan and that was that. Akoda did not care if the Askabi felt different. He was purely weak. She stood up to her full height and bared her fangs. Before she could speak her mind, Damien approached them. She let him speak first out of respect.
Akoda agreed with every word Damien had said mentally. Her pups were none of the Askabi's concern and he should have kept his nose where it belonged. Once Damien was done speaking, she locked eyes with the outcast and nothing but venom left her mouth as she displayed her dominance over the smaller dog.
"Listen to me you pathetic, inbred swine. I have no need to be nervous. I know exactly who my chief is. A strong leader who will bring greatness to the Ah'mir clan. You will never measure up to my chief, hence the reason you are weak as you are. Also, I took it upon myself to rear the pups to make sure they become strong members of the clan, and I intend to do that. I will be a strong mother, so it is of no concern to me." She glanced at Damien then looked at the askabi before finishing. "If I ever see you around my litter I will personally make sure you regret your first breath into this world. Now leave my area and give me my peace. And don't you ever dare stick your nose into my business again."
Akoda scoffed mentally as she stared down the Askabi. He had no values of a good dog. He was weak, and a traitor of the clan. Dogs like him had no values. Damien would be a good role model to the young ones and more. He was a strong male who had a clan to look after. Akoda would make good on her promise if the Askabi ever approached her litter.

Askabi should have truly kept his judgement to himself, should have kept his warnings quiet. Now, his ears promptly pinned back as he heard Damien's voice echo his own words. The fur along the nape of his neck began to bristle, not out of anger but due to feeling uncomfortable with his predicament. The shepherd mix turned his head to face his--unfortunate as it was--leader.
The glint of teeth made Askabi only tense further, immediate flashes of the night he lost his eye crawling through his mind. Askabi parted his maw as though he would respond, but honestly he was lost for words. They met eyes, and the brute understood it was a challenge. Does he risk his life when he wasn't ready yet to challenge Damien again?
He was beginning to doubt everything and the feeling made his stomach sink. He knew Damien would lead the pack to shed blood, but ultimately he had too many supporters for Askabi to be voicing his opinions so openly. Despite his worry for these unborn pups, it unfortunately wasn't his place to comment on how they chose to raise them.
Askabi seemed to visibly deflate, his tail not quite tucking but definitely lowered as his single pale eye moved elsewhere to avoid eye-contact. It was then Akoda showed her own aggression, promising to rid of his existence if he continued to push his nose into business that didn't concern him.
Askabi was definitely whale-eyed at the moment, earnestly shocked by the large canine's snarls and bared teeth. He should have understood he didn't know her personally. He shouldn't have assumed that she would be as soft as a flower. Hell, maybe the two were perfect for each other. Whatever the case, she was clearly snagged in Damien's trap.
The brown-shaded male murmured something unimportant beneath his breath. Maybe an apology as he gave his pelt a shake to try to deescalate the situation and immediately put some distance between himself and the strange couple.

Watching Askabi’s physical reaction to his mere presence was a boon to his mood; anger fizzling down to something more akin to simple irritation as he viewed the other male’s downcast expression and lowered tail. Good. Even the meager dregs of confidence that he had gathered in order to approach Akoda was far more than he was happy with letting the shepherd mix keep; after all, half the battle of submission was ensuring that the other canna knew that there was no use in rebellion. It was easier to keep him under his paw when he wasn’t trying to get up in the first place.
Akoda’s visceral reaction, though, was a surprise. The slight widening of his eyes was the only indication of his shock, listening to how she tore into the smaller canna. Had she truly adopted the views of he and Eliri’hassi so quickly? Oh, how delightful. He grinned, a slow, shark-like thing, and rasped his tongue briefly over the curve of her pointed ear. After all, such a display deserved positive reinforcement, did it not?
”Calm yourself, Akoda. He is not worth such an outburst.” He soothed, an approving rumble emanating from deep within his chest. ”He will not be foolish enough to approach you again, I am sure. In fact,” He turned his gaze back to Askabi, the hue of his eyes akin to hellfire as he said, ”He will be far too busy taking over your hunting duties. Such concern for your wellbeing has touched me so much that I’ve decided to have you retire– just until the ren are born, safe and sound.” He chortled, as if the idea had just come to him, contrary to his original intentions.
”Isn’t that right, Askabi?”

Akoda immediately started to calm herself as Damien's presence soothed her raging emotions. He was right, the Askabi was not worth her anger, or anything for that matter. It also greatly helped that Damien was also sure that the mutt would never approach her again. Akoda didn't want to be near such filth. Akoda would make sure her pups lived up to the clan's expectations, and perhaps more. When her Li'canna gave the order that the Askabi would be taking over her hunting duties she felt at peace. She needed to use all her energy to tend to her unborn pups. That meant plenty of sleep, food, and a calm environment. Let the slave Askabi take over her duties. The Askabi was worth nothing and his only purpose was to serve and be put down at every opportunity. Out of respect for the chief she stayed quiet and kept her composure.
She looked at the Askabi silently as Damien asked his question towards the outcast. ”Isn’t that right, Askabi?”
Would he dare to defy the chief? Akoda silently hoped that the Askabi would give the wrong answer. That would lead to Damien ripping his pelt off for sure. A nice entertainment, to see the Askabi be treated like a bone or a mere chew toy. But if that was not the outcome, she could sure use some rest.

★⸻𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒊⸻★ Askabi peered over his shoulder at the two canines he had tried to depart from. The pity he had originally felt for Akoda was shifting into anger for her clear disbelief of the male she decided to create life with. It was absurd, and he tried his best to stomp down these emotions. She could not help that she trusted the first dog that proved himself to her after the earthquake.
The shepherd steeled himself, his single eye focusing on Damien as he considered the dark brute. It was this moment that Mosi's words echoed in his mind. He didn't have to stay here, he didn't need to keep dealing with these dogs that could care less if he slipped off a cliff. His muscles stiffened, he contemplated snapping at this monster he faced.
But he instead calmly bared his teeth in a false smile. "Of course." He sedately responded to Damien, his pale gaze seeming to shimmer with a new strength as he understood that within a matter of days he would disappear. His new life would begin and Ah'mir would be down a packmate.
