Damien stood at the border of the forest, orange eyes bright like embers within the blackness of his face. It had taken only a brief walk through the city of Kah’ren and a long inhale of his nose to realize the truth: the humans, whether they had perished or simply vanished, were no more. After escaping the confines of the crumbling animal shelter, he had immediately left the panicking canids behind and struck out with a few of the more composed dogs at his back. The absence of mankind left a vacuum of power to be filled, with canna stepping up to be the dominant species of the land. He had every intention of taking advantage of the chaos, to reestablish his reign in this new world.
”Come forth, you dogs.” He called, voice clear and strong as he looked over any canine who stepped forward. ”I am Damien, Greyo’miera, the Light Thief. Those who have traveled with me from before know my name, and know the power that the shilah’mira flower holds. Those who do not know me, I ask that you hear this.” The great black dog straightened to his full height, scars prominent upon his large form as he bared his teeth in a grin that was truly wolfish in its charm.
”I will make a name for me and mine, and claim this forest and the riches within for my own. Any canna who joins me will be rewarded with respect, a full belly, and a comfortable home. Our enemies will shiver when they hear our clan’s name. All I ask is that you pull your weight. Prove your worth, and pledge your loyalty to me.” One fang protruded over his lip in a roguish smile, tail raised and posture enticing. ”Who amongst you would join the Ah’mir at my side? I intend to search this forest for a home for me and mine.”
He gestured to the expanse of woods behind him, surety within every twitch of his muscular frame as he gazed into the unknown wilderness beyond. He knew, just as he knew his own name, that opportunity lay within. He would find a new base of operation, would grow the sleeping flower within, and use it to rebuild his empire from the ground up. He needed no one, but he could not deny the appeal of having a clan at his back.
First, though, he would need to get himself and any canine who followed across the river bordering the city and the woodlands.

Akoda was a tall, large, and beautiful great dane, and that was not up for debate. She moved with elegance and power with each step she took. Even her brother, Navir, could easily see the good looks she held. Speaking of her brother, she recently separated from him. They both decided that leaving each other would be the best for both of them, make a new start, especially with their clan gone. Ah yes, their clan. Both Akoda and Navir were taken away from their clan by humans, then put in the same kennel at a shelter. Afterwards the earthquake happened, and they managed to escape the crumbling building with some help. When the dust cleared, the two siblings noticed that the humans had all disappeared. That was when they left each other in favor of following their own path.
Now, Akoda was happy that the humans were gone. Good riddance. Akoda always hated the humans, and now the humans were gone. The dogs ruled the land. It was like a dream come true. She stopped walking when she overheard a speech. Akoda listened with interest. She turned towards the voice and found the voice belonged to a large black dog named Damien, littered with scars. He was recruiting for a clan named Ah'mir. Akoda didn't need to think twice, she decided to join his clan. Damien's speech was very inspiring, and from the way it sounded Ah'mir was very promising. Plus this dog seemed very strong. Not only that, she was instantly attracted to Damien. Akoda was into strong and large males, and Damien fit both of those descriptions. He also had the character of a leader. She would join Ah'mir and make their enemies cower.
Akoda strode towards Damien and spoke with confidence once she stood in front of him. "Greetings Damien. I am Akoda. I wish to join Ah'mir, and I pledge my loyalty to you from this day forth. I will prove my worth and serve Ah'mir with everything I have." Now having a closer look, Akoda was blown away by how Damien's physical strength looked up close and her attraction towards him grew. Yes, with a leader like him, this clan would be strong. She looked forward to getting to know him better.

Separating from his sister was not a decision he had taken lightly. Jinx was a mother, her life already tied to a clan that Castor felt no obligation towards. His nieces and apparent nephews would be cared for, and perhaps he would see them again. For now, that was not his concern. Kahru'hu, the buried pup that had been luckily uninjured in any permanent way, had been taken into Castor's care. The lanky hound kept the scrap of fur close once he was free. He presumed that the ren would have had a much more socially balanced life if he had stuck with Jinx. However, it seemed the youngling's decision was made solely on whoever's face he saw first through the debris, much like the ducks Castor had seen on long walks in his previous life. He took to his new position as a protective figure with ease. Thus, the odd pair of lanky red and white hound and grey scrap of fur was created. He had no clue if Kahru saw him as more of a father figure, or merely a guide through the next chapter of his life, but Castor would do his best to fill whatever role he found himself in. Castor had no intention of staying in the city. Though he hadn't seen any more humans since the snags placed him within the chained walls of the prison, he would not risk it. Humans would play no further part in his life, and would not harm Kahru ever again. "Come forth, you dogs," an authoritative voice rang out amidst the throngs of dogs fleeing every which way. Castor let out a small hum, his attention piqued by this figure. He nudged Kahru gently, steering the pup towards the voice so the pair could listen. The black form was a beacon of strength, at least that was what he projected. The Ibizan was a dog who could easily lead on his own if he wanted to, but the thought of trying to create a patchwork pack of strays while giving Kahru the proper attention and guidance he would need was not something he figured could be balanced. A place of strength and order would do them both good. He was not the first to speak. That position was taken by a young dane, her introduction deeming her to be Akoda. With all these new dogs he had met in recent times, Castor found himself longing for a true name. Greyo'miera, a light thief, that was a name worthy of a leader. His monicker reeked of humanity, one chosen for him rather than found within him. Perhaps this light thief could find the sighthound something better fitting. He stepped forward after Akoda finished speaking, a small dip of his head to the larger dog in respect before he spoke, "I am Castor, and this is Kahru'hu. We will follow you as Ah'mir dogs. Your knowledge will become ours, to blossom as the shilah'mira does. Isn't that right, Kahru?" He directed the last sentence down towards his small charge, hoping the eager pup wouldn't embarrass him in front of the chief. He would hate to discipline the ren so early in their partnership. @damien @akoda Kahru'hu

Despite the fact that his small, filthy face was still matted with blood, tears and mucus, Kahru'hu was all smiles as he bounced along cheerfully at his newfound friend's paws. The joy that he felt just stretching his legs and having a grown-up guiding him overcame the anguishing emotions that he had felt only hours earlier as he lay buried under a pile of rubble. Yes, Kahru, in his young, naive mind had for the moment forgotten the nightmare. It had been eclipsed with wonder at the larger male that had freed him. He had at first followed Castor because he was afraid that he would be swallowed up by the earth again, but before long he was eagerly barraging the tall dog with questions and tagging along at his rear just as he would his own mother.
Kahru didn't notice that they were purposefully wandering further and further away from the town, or that strange forests had suddenly appeared where territories used to sprawl. He had been too young to become familiar with the turf that his mother's small clan had occupied. He had also never learned that these places should have been heavily occupied by humans. To him, it was all new and exciting and wonderful. Every great now and again his curiosity would get the better of him and he would dart away from his guardian's side to stick his snout into a bundle of flowers, splash in a dirty puddle, or chase after small bugs. In the end though, he always came happily bounding back to Castor's side when he was called, usually with a brand new question like "How come we don't eat any flik, Castor?"
Time flew by for the pup until a voice called out, beckoning them closer. With a nudge from Castor, he obeyed and gravitated towards the speaker. At first, Kahru thought that maybe they'd circled back to the shelter, but a closer look would reveal that this was a different group. They stood at the edge of a great forest, listening to the black dog that had called to them all.
Kahru didn't quite understand everything that the bigger dog said, but he got most of it. The dog called himself by two names - One that Kahru didn't understand, Damien, but also Greyo'miera - Light thief. He wanted everyone to come and join his clan in the forest. He even promised that he would help them fill their bellies. Kahru's stomach rumbled at the thought. He hadn't had anything to eat since the Snags had given him breakfast early this morning.
A few dogs spoke up, calling out that they wanted to join the Ah'mir clan. Kahru craned his neck to see who was speaking - But startled back to attention when Castor barked out his own introduction. They grey pup looked back and forth between Castor and Greyo'miera and then nodded quietly, unable to find his own words for a moment. He was wracking his small brain to try to find the respectful name that his mother had insisted he call her own clan leader. Instinctively, he felt like it was really important that he got it right.
"Er-Yeah." He said finally. "That's right, Li'Greyo." And then he gazed not at his new chief but at Castor in hopes of gaining his approval for using the right words. At the same time, his mind buzzed with questions, but for once he felt too shy to blurt them out.

When Ru'Shaska strayed away from shelter, eagerly following some of the other dogs venturing towards the direction of the river, she had carried with her a sliver of hope that she would somehow see, or at least catch a scent, of her former gang. By now, Ru had investigated all her old digs - the ferry, the docks, the restaurant, and finally the woods where she and her friends would hang out. It seemed that they were no where to be found. Was everyone really gone? It gave her a feeling in her chest that she didn't like, making her tail droop when she realized she might never find them.
Because she had gone off on her own, Ru suddenly realized she had lost sight of the dogs who had scattered towards this part of town. She looked around frantically, ears pinned back. She didn't know how long she trotted between the streets bordering the forest, not really sure where to go. She wanted to find the other dogs who escaped the shelter with her. They were all she had, now. She was not normally scared to be alone...but today was different. Everything was different.
When a clear voice rang out from the forest's border, it made the wandering dog come to a stop. It settled the panic in her chest, and replaced it with excitement. They were right here! She took off from where she was, bounding towards them. Ru met the group and looked around at them all in newfound devotion, her tongue lolling and tail wagging gently. Ru with was a medium-sized dog. By all means she was not small. But, she was certainly dwarfed in comparison to most of the dogs gathered here. Especially, the great dane, and the black dog that was leading them.
If the leader had not been making a speech, she probably would not have been able to hold back greeting everybody. Ru listened and gazed up upon the larger dog with admiration. Surely, if all this was true, then she had found a new home, and new friends. She spoke up to add her own voice. "Me too, I will join!" She barked. Realizing that perhaps she was too blunt, the young dog hurried to introduce herself, looking around and trying to meet the eyes of the rest of the group. "My name is Ru'Shaska, it's nice to meet every one." She bumbled out.

Askabi knew Damien from before the earthquake. He'd be lying if he said he liked any inch of the dark brute. There was a deep history between the two that simply wouldn't be rectified overnight. He kept his distance and his eyes evaded the other canine. He could still feel the sting of his left eye, and he wasn't eager to lose his remaining orb. His muscles were exhausted, he almost wished he was back in the shelter in his bed.
He had been abandoned be nearly everyone he trusted. For the time being, he was disinterested in challenging Damien's leadership.
Askabi's single eyes slid towards Akoda. Watching the large she-dog's eyes fasten onto Damien as though he would be her savior made him stomach coil. His eye then passed Castor, the pup at his side and Ru'Shaska. They too watched the black male with adoration.
He had lost everything to Damien--even his name. He once again returned to avoiding eye-contact as he followed from the rear. He refused to speak his new name, but he was far too aware of the danger he faced if he attempted to speak his former.

Greyo’miera watched as dogs drew closer like moths to a flame. And who could blame them? Canna were social to their core but for a few exceptions, and it was a rare dog who preferred the life of a ro to that of a clan. He himself was no different, truth be told.
The showing of new canines was more than he had expected. Akoda, Castor, Ru’shaska, and a wisp of fluff named Kahru’hu. All looked promising, though he did raise an amused brow at the ren. It would certainly be the first time a whelp joined his ranks, but he looked old enough to begin learning. Probably. He’d never paid enough attention to bratlings to learn their growth rates.
Despite the promising outlook, Damien knew well that looks could be deceiving. He had no desire to open his clan and territory to just any dog who professed their loyalty; they had to be strong enough to pull their weight as well. He turned a calculative eye to the river behind him. It moved sluggishly, fighting against the creeping winter attempting to freeze it. During the warmer months, its current would increase in speed and strength. For now, if one could get past the shocking cold of the water, it would be the easiest time of year to cross it short of it freezing solid.
Anyone who wanted to be Ah’mir should be at least strong enough to cross the river. That would be his test.
”Welcome, all of you.” He said, casting his gaze over every one of the dogs gathered. ”This river will mark the border between our home and the land beyond. To enter Ah’mir’s ranks, it’s only reasonable that you should be able to enter its territory.” With that said, the male turned and plunged into the river’s depths. He breathed carefully through the cold that threatened to lock his muscles, strong legs carrying him swiftly to the other bank. Pulling himself from the water, he shook out his fur before fixing his orange stare on the gathered canna once more. Never let it be said that Damien asks of his ranks what he cannot do himself.
”In a month's time this river will freeze, but all the rest of the year it will be flowing faster than it is now. If you cannot swim across, you will be trapped within the forest for most of the year. And we can’t have that.” He smiled grimly. He had high hopes for them all- with the exception of Askabi, of course. Whether the mutt succeeded or failed meant little to the black dog.

Akoda listened intently to Damien's words and welcoming into the Ah'mir clan. She made note of the river that was now the border of her clan. She watched as Damien strongly swam over to the other side and shook out his black coat. The water did not faze Akoda, not one bit. For Akoda was a strong swimmer herself. She honestly didn't care whether the river was frozen or not. She was a strong great dane and could withstand anything life threw at her. Once Damien stopped speaking she jumped in with no hesitation. She felt the uncomfortable cold through her fur but did not let it bother her. Weakness was not allowed. Her long and strong legs carried her to her destination and she exited the river next to her leader. She then shook out her own fur as she would wait for the other dogs to follow. Soon when the river would freeze she would have to be careful when crossing should she decide to exit the territory to hunt for food. For now, she would stand in the cold as the other new members would make their way across the cold water.

"I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. BUT I KNOW I'M DOING IT REALLY, REALLY WELL."
|
| "Whoa!" Little Kahru'hu squeaked, bounding away from Castor's side to get a closer look at the dogs now plunging across the river to join their new chief. His tail wagged wildly behind him, for he had never experienced such freezing cold before in his life. For all he knew, they made it look as simple as a summertime splash in a puddle. A great smile crossed his face as he looked back at Castor, eyes sparkling eagerly.
"Are we going to jump in, Castor? Are we?" He barked. "Li'Greyo says we have to if we want to join the clan!" As if the bigger dog hadn't just heard the moving speech himself. "I've never swum in the river before! Do you think that my Mama will be able to find us after we get over there? How will she know to find us, Castor?"
His wide puppy paws were now working the icy ground in a hyperactive little dance, ready to get a start on chasing after those bigger dogs and proving himself a worthy member of Ah'mir. A part of his small brain had begun to imagine Greyo'mira and the towering Akoda giving him an impressed look or an approving nod as he reached the other bank, welcoming him into the ranks as an equal.
Of course, he wasn't about to do any of that without the dog that had saved his life...so for now all he could do was look up at the tall red and white male's face with literal puppy dog eyes, hoping that he was still on board with the idea of joining Ah'mir Clan on the other side of the river.

Ru'shaska barely listened as the Li'Canna warned them about the river running faster in the warmer months. Her tail was wagging intensely, excited at the thought of swimming. She was already used to the river's current, and just as well as it was reflected in her canna name, she was not worried about it being a problem for her. At all. She was ready to....go!
The sound of her claws scraping on the sediment could be heard as she scrambled to get a running start. The mutt ran, leapt, and dove into the water with a resounding splash. Her body disappeared under the water for a brief moment, but then her head re-emerged. Like a fish, she expertly propelled herself forward through the cold river current. The frigidness did not hinder her, and in fact gave her an adrenaline rush that encouraged her to move faster.
She paddled swiftly, enjoying the feeling of kicking her legs freely in the open water. Her lithesome tail moved and bent in the water behind her, serving as her rudder. Instead of swimming in a straight line, she could not help but have a little fun. Before reaching the opposite shore, she swung her body around, performing a couple of fancy little circles and figure-eight maneuvers in the water.
After her unnecessary display in swimming prowess, she beelined to shore and felt her paws to touch the silt of the bank. She pulled herself up out of the water, her tan fur soaked and dripping. She felt a little tired, thanks to the extra swimming she did. It looked like Akoda reached the shore before she had. She shook herself off and turned to look and see if the rest of the pack had crossed.

Castor was not one to be fooled. He would not put his life, or Kahru's, in danger for some chunk of fur that barked the loudest. His stance held firm as the leader of the Ah'mir's plunged into the river. Of course, he made it across easily. A slender muzzle barely managed to contain a scoff at the task set ahead of them. Winter was approaching swiftly, and though his pelt matched snow easily, the male did not prefer it. Becoming a literal block of ice was not on his list of favoured activities. However, he needed a family, and Greyo'miera seemed to hold enough power and prestige to lead that cause.
Kahru'hu's incessant yaps battered his ears as the pair drew closer to the water. They were the last to start their journey - if the one-eyed outcast silently trailing them counted. Castor assumed he did not. The young pup's questions about his mother sent a pang through him. Castor had no intention of kidnapping a ren from a mother rightfully searching for him. However, Kahru was alone in the shelter, and his mother likely met an untimely fate. Right before a daunting task for such young pup was not the time to break his heart.
"I hope she'll be able to find us, Kahru. We have to make it to the other side first. Stay upriver of me. If the current pushes on you, I'll be able to catch you and get us both across with your help paddling," the last part of his sentence came out as a rush, not wanting the little ren to lose confidence or think he'd be unable to do it. He doubted much could dim Kahru's spark, but he certainly wasn't trying to find out. Positioning himself downriver of Kahru'hu, Castor stepped forward into the river. He winced as the icy cold water instantly soaked through his fine coat. It felt like his bones were being chilled. His small apprentice was lucky he had enough fur to just make him a sopping wet mop instead of an icicle. "Let's go."
The slender hound pushed into the water, trying to keep his ribcage in line with the young ren paddling away beside him. There wasn't much else that made the male, and he didn't want Kahru to slip under his haunches where he was practically just a spine. The pair pushed forwards, making good progress in Castor's opinion. He could only hope that the young pup truly did have the strength of an Ah'mir to make it across.

"I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. BUT I KNOW I'M DOING IT REALLY, REALLY WELL."
|
| A great grin spread quickly across Kahru's face as the realization set in - They really were going to do it. Castor was going to cross the river with him. He barely heard the bigger dog's instructions through the excited buzzing of his own mind but he nodded eagerly anyway. There was only a moment's hesitation, a brief stop to watch Castor step into the racing river, before he plunged in paws-first himself with a tremendous, clumsy splash.
Kahru gasped hard, immediately taking in a mouthful of freezing river water that had to be sputtered away. He had never in his life been so cold so fast! It was almost completely instinct now that drove him onward at Castor's side, splashing frantically through the water to keep himself afloat. All of Castor's instructions were lost to Kahru now, completely forgotten in this newfound fight to even breathe properly.
His little muzzle bobbed under at one point but he surfaced again almost immediately with a sharp intake of breath. He did his best to keep his eyes locked on the far shore where the rest of the clan waited. Slowly, ever so slowly, they did seem to be getting closer. He was doing it! He was going to be a real Ah'mir dog with his friend Castor. If his tail hadn't been sodden with riverwater he would have wagged it.
But he was getting so tired...every paddle of his paws felt like he was slogging through cement instead of water now and it was getting harder and harder to catch his breath. Before he knew what was happening, he was no longer at Castor's shoulder. And then he was lagging at his side, and then behind his tail. And then the current began to tug him down the middle of the river. His paws paddled furiously in panic but it wasn't enough. He was being carried off in the wrong direction - Kidnapped by the river.
"C-Castor!" He managed to squeak. "Castor, help!"

Chuffs of air left the skeleton as they made their way across the frigid waters. He could feel his muscles stiffening, his entire body begging to curl into a ball to preserve whatever semblance of body heat still kindled within his chest. With the wisened knowledge of an adult, he knew this pain was temporary. They were already easily halfway across, so if he rounded up he was practically already climbing up the banks. Damn this Damien and his wretched tasks. Damn this river and its freezing currents. Damn this-
Kahru. The soggy lump of fur was slipping behind him. He could feel the ren's fur drag from up by his shoulder to down by his ribs. No. Castor flicked his head to his side, hoping for his nip to find Kahru's scruff to drag him back up to a safer position but instead the river slapped him for daring to interfere with its plan. No, no. The splashes of the pup grew weaker and slower. He heard the river steal the little one's breath for a moment before he thankfully surfaced again. However, now the ren fell further and further behind. There was no way for Castor to turn around in time to snatch him away from the water's grasp. No, no, no!
"C-Castor! Castor help!" the strained voice of Kahru'hu struck the final frozen blow in Castor's chest. "Kahru!!" He all but bellowed, the goal of reaching the other side of the river abandoned. He had been through too much in his short life for it to end like this. Only hours ago he had been trapped beneath rubble barely able to breathe. The suffocating river did not deserve to take that victory away from him. His body swiveled, now streamlined heading downstream towards the pup. He could always find the rest of Ah'mir later. If his muscles were screaming then he couldn't hear them. He couldn't lose Kahru so soon. "Keep paddling! I'm coming!" he boomed once again. The ren was exhausted, that was clear from the ordeal he was facing. He could only hope that his voice could spark something in the pup to keep trying.
"Go for the bank! Keep trying to get across Kahru! KAHRU'HU!" his voice rasped, the exertion of pushing himself as fast as he could through the glacial river stealing the sound. It seemed with every paddle he made, the smokey, soggy pup got five further away. It felt impossible. The Ibizan started to paddle diagonally, bringing himself closer to the end of this trial. He called out to the pup once more, his name fading over the swirling monster that kidnapped the pup. Amber eyes scoured the small crests, hoping to see a small grey head pop up out of the waves. For just one more annoyingly yapped sentence to carry over the wind. Shaking out his fur instinctively, the hound sprinted down the river, searching for any sign of his ren. Twice more the youngling's name rang over the water, hoping to fall on Kahru's ears instead of Rumblier's.
He forced himself to stop, tears pricking at the edge of his eyes that he forced not to fall. He did not cry. He did not... cry. A shuddering breath left him as his mind returned to his own body. The nippy air turned to full-force bites through his thin coat. Ice clung to his whiskers as his breath fogged insultingly before him. He couldn't save him. The pup that he had worked so hard to save earlier that morning and he lost him already. His freezing body thawed with rage as he hollered at the sky, a slew of curses unleashing themselves upon the gods. Still, not a tear fell. Out of breath and far from the clan he had lost everything to join, Castor began the long walk back.
As he drew closer to the group, he kept his gaze trained on Greyo'miera and not on the reactions of any of the dogs around him. He knew that the anger burning in his chest couldn't be turned on this massive canna. Not only would he get snapped in half, but he would likely end up like the pitiful Askabi. "The river took him," his tone was flat, numb with both cold and what he couldn't admit was grief. They were the only words he could manage. Despite this, his eyes were still ablaze with tears he refused to shed and anger he had yet to unleash. Turning away from the Chief, Castor found a place to sit stiffly, his gaze fixed back on the churning water. His ears were deaf to all except Li'Greyo and Kahru. Only those two voices mattered for him moving forward at this moment. Everyone else was inconsequential.

Damien watched with pleasure as dogs began to plunge into the river’s icy depths. Akoda swam with confidence, at the very least; she was far too large to display any true dexterity in the water, but knowing that she could cross safely was enough. He had no doubt that she would specialize in other areas. Ru’shaska, on the other paw, took to the water better than some fish he’d seen. Greyo couldn’t help the upward tilt of his lip as he watched the smaller dog do circles in the water. It was cheeky, to be sure, but amusing all the same. Perhaps he would have her lead a swimming lesson for the clan once the weather grew warmer. It would do well for morale, and perhaps give the she-canna a sense of importance. The tall, skinny dog, Castor, hesitated to whisper something into the ren’s ear before they both plunged into the water. He had expected the pup to be carried, in all honesty, but it was entirely possible that the little dog possessed some skill in the water that would make him stand out from the others. The current was slow, after all, and he’d seen crazier things in his time than a whelp that could swim. But it would seem, as the pup began to tire, that that was not the case. His brow lowered severely, casting his expression into shadow as the pup– Kahru’hu– began to drift away. ”Grab him!” He barked out, jaw clenching as he ruthlessly suppressed any other form of concern from showing on his features. He was not a kind dog, no, not even a particularly just one– but he was not so cruel as to damn a child to death for the crime of being young. He ran along the river’s edge, though could not quite match the speed at which Castor swam after Kahru; after a few long strides he returned to the gaggle of mismatched Ah’mir with a displeased expression. When Castor returned, it was sans pup, and a low growl began to rumble in his chest. ”Well done, all of you.” He turned to the dogs that had crossed successfully, gaze containing a near-imperceptible light of upset as he did so. ”Stay as a group, but begin to explore this forest. Take note of anything worthy of reporting back to me. Castor and I will join you shortly.”Then, when the others had dispersed, he turned to the smaller male. He was not so soft as to offer any physical or verbal comfort, but instead nodded towards the river. ”Come. We will not rest until we at least recover his body for the gods. The river can’t have taken him far.” He woofed lowly, beginning to walk the river’s edge with every intention of the other dog following. || brief time skip ||

"I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. BUT I KNOW I'M DOING IT REALLY, REALLY WELL."

| Much later, as the sun was hanging low in the sky and dark shadows were cast chilingly over the icy river, a small, sodden figure began to emerge slowly from the water. Kahru was gasping hard, his breath rasping wetly in his throat for all of the water that he had swallowed. His paws felt like they had stones tied to them, and the cold made them hurt so bad. His teeth chattered noisily in his mouth so hard that he couldn't even call out for help...but he was alive.
After the river had washed him away from Castor, he'd paddled furiously, sometimes being shoved cruelly under flows of ice as he went. Eventually he'd surfaced and been shoved close to a shallow bank by a big ice slab. He'd managed there to get a foothold and drag himself from the clutches of that deadly cold river.
For a while Kahru simply lay there in a shivering puddle, but Li'Greyo's voice was still echoing in his ears. Had he done it? He lifted his heavy head and took a look at his surroundings for the first time. He was on the bank of a river with a great, dark forest of pines looming in front of him. His heart skipped in his chest - He had made it to the other side of the river, just like the chief had wanted him to do.
And with that, a stubborn will to survive began to take hold of the little ren, engulfing his shivering, sputtering frame until it overwhelmed the fear and pain that was keeping him tied to that freezing riverbank. Though his pelt was now covered in a thin layer of frost and his legs wobbled furiously, he managed to right himself, then stand, then walk ever so slowly into the snow-capped forest.
It was rough going, and he fell down more than once. There was even a time when he felt like he could just lie down in the snow and drift right off to sleep, but a familiar scent had come to him on the breeze and woken him right back up. It was Castor's smell. Upon further investigation, he found tracks in the snow as if the bigger dog had plunged through the white stuff and passed him right by. Kahru stood once more and followed that scent with his dripping nose to the ground, faint as it was, in the hopes of reaching the dog that had saved him earlier.
He and Castor were going to be Ah'mir dogs together, he just knew it.
