In the chaos of the earthquake and its aftermath, Tavi’elu had just enough time to ask her brother to meet her in a week’s time before they both went their separate ways. With the disappearance of the humans and a pack of hungry dogs to feed, there was no shortage of work and exploration to be done, and the time had flown by in a flash. Now, the white and red dog waited somewhat impatiently at the docks, half convinced that she’d imagined her brother up in some elaborate fever dream. Blood ran thicker than water, but there wasn’t a thing on this earth that ran thicker than pack. The slender Ibizan wondered if her kin had been alone since they’d been sent away to live with their own humans all those years ago. Had he loved? Had he lost? Had the gods reunited them so that they could be together in both blood and clan? Tavi didn’t know, but she was eager to find out. In the wake of so much death, she found a renewed sense of importance when it came to the canna around her. ”Castor!” She called out a greeting when she saw a similarly svelte form appear on the horizon, the rising sun casting both of their pelts in hues of gold and red. ”Over here, you dog– I caught a fish for ya. Excuse the way the throat’s a little shredded, Haka’far– that’s my son, by the way– Haka’far got a little enthusiastic shakin’ it around. C’mon, don’t be shy.” She nudged the fish his way; it was a little slender, but still a decent snack for the time of year. Castor | Thi'e Grair Ren

In all honesty, Castor wasn't sure what to expect when meeting his sister once more. The fact that she and he were both in the same place after so many years was almost unfathomable. He was sure that he would never see his siblings again after being sold. Many months had been spent grieving in his human home over the loss of his family. He grew into a confident and strong adult under the likely assumption that he was alone in the world. Jinx's return to his life could never change who he was, fundamentally, but it definitely opened his mind.
They were clearly at different points in their life. Castor felt almost like an outsider within his own clan. Greyo'miera was a street dog from the start. His General was no different. The only one that struck him as odd was Askabi, but he hadn't associated himself with the one-eyed male all that much. Kahru was just a ren, born in the city and now to be raised within the strength and structure of Ah'mir. Castor was an Ah'mir, no one could deny that after the test they had endured, but he still felt like a pet. He was just as new to this world as his future apprentice. His life with humans had left him woefully unprepared for living alone and hunting for his own food, despite how much he loved it. Jinx was a mother, an established member of a clan, and a force to be reckoned with.
"Castor! Over here, you dog– I caught a fish for ya. Excuse the way the throat’s a little shredded, Haka’far– that’s my son, by the way– Haka’far got a little enthusiastic shakin’ it around. C’mon, don’t be shy,” the booming bark of his sister drew him closer to the frost-laced docks. The wind over the river nipped at him through his thin coat, but it wasn't unmanageable for now. He smiled at his sister, tearing off the meat along one half of the fish before nudging the other half back to her as he swallowed it down. "Take that half, I insist. It's only fair seeing as you caught it," he stated, clearly not taking no for an answer if she were to protest.
"It's been so long since I've seen you," his voice almost trailed off at the end, but the stoic dog was determined to avoid awkward silences, "Are Kira and Haka'far your only two? I've taken Kahru'hu under my care and he is enough of a pawful. I can't imagine trying to deal with more than one, especially after all this. Are you safe? In a clan?" though there were many questions, his tone was far from interrogatory. He was inquisitive, curious about the life that he had previously assumed to simply not exist. He was sure the complexities of their lives would not all come out so easily here on the docks, but it was a good start at least.

”Don’t mind if I do. Was hoping you would say that, honestly– I ate earlier this morning but sitting here smelling fresh fish would make any dog hungry again.” Tavi’elu crowed out with a satisfied air, not an ounce of hesitation to her body language as she gulped down the offered half of the meal.
She grinned approvingly when her brother kicked off the conversation. She’d had no idea as to his personality, and she wouldn’t have had a problem if he were one of those shy canna, but it was nice to not have to carry the conversation. ”Kahru’hu? Oh, that fluffy little pup from the shelter? He was a cutie,” The svelte dog recalled, tail wagging. ”I have three little bundles of mischief, actually. Kira is my daughter, and Haka’far and Lendri are my sons. They wear one another out a lot of the time, so it’s not so bad.”
She leaned in conspiratorially. ”The trick is to give them tasks that seem super important, but really just tire them out so they can nap. The other day I took them out to the field and asked them to find me a special four-leaf clover. They scampered around for an hour before bringing me two clovers that they’d stuck together with spit.” She barked out a laugh, mirth on full display. ”So imaginative. Best part was they napped for another hour after that. Their tracking skills need work, but they’re still just my little babies. All that training stuff can come later.” She waved a paw dismissively.
”Ah, crap, sorry for rambling on. I just can’t help it when it comes to those three. A clan– yeah. I escaped my humans not too long after I was sold, and joined the Why’os. Best decision I ever made.” Her gaze turned curious. ”How about you? You look healthy enough– you in a clan? If not, the Why’os are always recruiting. And I’m sure my trio would be thrilled to meet their uncle.” She wagged her brows at him, a playful gesture that belied the seriousness of the offer. She could see it now: siblings reunited, working together to rebuild the Why’o’s home. A male figure for her children to look up to after the death of their father. It could be perfect– or at least close to it.
”When did you leave your humans, anyway?”

Munching on his half of the gifted fish, Castor listened intently to his sister. So he had two nephews, Lendri and Haka'far, and one niece, Kira. That was good to know at least if he somehow managed to find another suspiciously familiar canna in a natural disaster. He laughed along with her, smooth timbre leaving him for the first time in a long while. Laughter was not something Castor experienced often, but maybe reuniting with family made socialisation smoother. The sound trailed off as she mentioned her affiliation to the Why'os. Their two clans had no bad blood between them, to his knowledge at least. However, it meant that he couldn't convince his kin to join him and the family he built.
Castor looked away slightly, his head giving a slow shake as he began, "Ah'mir. Li'Greyo was recruiting just after the damned shelter collapsed, and Kahru - stuck to my side - and I joined him. As for my humans, truly only about a week ago. They brought some nini-muk of a ren and threw me to the side. Sent me to that prison to rot. Rot'zo's will lead my escape before I saw you again." Amber gaze turned out to the sea as he spoke. While he was grateful to be a free canna, he still somewhat mourned his previous life. He was soft, a baby to surviving trying to give out the facade of confidence and assure Kahru that he knew what they were doing. He missed his free food that didn't require hunting. The walls not made of glass that actually kept the cold out. In this new life, that brought him shame. Everyone around him seemed to have these wild lives while he had been relatively pampered. He would learn. He would survive.
"I would love to meet my niece and nephews. I'm still a bit new to clan politics and whether it will be possible, but if so I would be honoured. Will their father be joining them? I mean no offense. I just want to know how many new family members I have now," Castor asked softly, knowing it may be a sensitive topic as whoever sired his kin had yet to be mentioned. The slender hound swallowed the last morsels of the fish quickly, gaze searching his sister's face in the pause between her answer.

”Ah’mir?” She tilted her head to the side, nose wrinkling slightly in thought. ”Okay, yeah, I think I’ve heard of them? But nothing concrete. They kinda keep to themselves until they don’t.” Tavi’elu tried to smother the disappointment she felt when her idle dreams of a family reunited died. Maybe Navira would form some sort of alliance with this clan, so that she and Castor could visit anyways….?
Which, speaking of, ”Hey, what’s your canna name, anyway? Sorry, I only knew you as Castor when we were separated.” She lifted a paw to poke him with it, a wide grin stretching her lips. ”’sides, I don’t think that my kiddos even know any human names. Now that I think of it, I don’t think they know my name was Jinx. Wait, did I tell you my new name?” She puffed out her chest a bit, tail thumping against the ground.
”It’s Tavi’elu. Lots’a people think that means I’m a jerk or something, but I’ve always just said what I meant.” She was oblivious to the regrets he had about his pet life before. Sure, free food was a luxury, but she was prideful enough that it would have invited scorn. An easy life over a free life? Preposterous.
”Li’Navira seems like a chill sort. She just took power over the Why’o, y’know, and… well, a lot of dogs were lost in the, the incident. I don’t think she’d be willing to risk anyone’s loyalty, to be honest with you.” Tavi leaned forward a bit. ”What I’m trying to say is, family is more important than borders right now, I think. You’ve gotta meet my babies, and I don’t think she’d stop it if I said it was important to me.” She reassured.
”Their dad… my Udu’far, he… he didn’t survive. Not the earthquake, but the snags… they killed him before all the humans disappeared.” She was ashamed that she couldn’t conceal the slight whine to her tone, then, the primitive and instinctual display of grief as her head lowered a tad. ”I’m grateful that they’re so young. That they might grow up without knowing what they’re missing. I… I miss him every day.” She shook her head, peering towards her brother sincerely.
”I think you were a gift from the gods, Castor. Just when I had lost someone so important, my own kin emerged from the literal rubble. It’s gotta be fate, right?”

Jinx was always good for conversation. Even as a pup, her spout of words could rarely be shut off. She made for a great Why'o if his understanding of their namesake was correct. Before he could even tell her that he had yet to get a canna name, she was already proudly launching into the story of hers and her life with the Why'os. He smiled and nodded at her invitation to join her for at least a meeting of her pups before the mood turned sombre. It was a pity that he would never know his brother-in-law, but at least his sister still could keep a part of him with her always.
"I don't think it could be anything else but fate. I couldn't believe I was actually seeing your face through all that dust, let alone that you were searching for more family of your own. I'd much rather give credit to the gods for putting us in the same place at the right time than ruddy snags. I'm sorry for your loss, Tavi," her new name slid off his tongue with ease. It indeed fit her to a tee, and he presumed that he should get into the habit of calling her that instead of Jinx, lest he let his nieces and nephews in on a secret that they could pester her with.
"I know I can't ever know your pain. I nearly lost Kahru when we joined Ah'mir. Li'Greyo instructed us to cross a river and I tried to keep Kahru upstream but he slipped out from behind me and got carried away by the river. I chased him for what felt like forever but the stream took him. It was only later that we found him, the poor thing soaking wet and shivering but alive thank Rahani'hu. He's going to be called Rumblier'e Hali (friend with shadows) for all he's been through before he's even an apprentice!" The smile lacing the end of his story was hopefully enough to relieve any stress about Kahru's well-being on his sister. The little scrap was already causing his muzzle to grey, he didn't need Tavi's to start turning as well.
"As for my canna name, I don't actually have one yet. I've still been going as Castor, but I would like to have a true name. I don't think I'll ever be able to shake that instinct to respond when someone says Castor, but I'd much prefer a name in our tongue than theirs to go by," he stated plainly. He hadn't given it much thought as of yet. He knew that there was a fluidity to the names - that they could change with accomplishments or demotions in the case of Askabi. Hopefully he didn't get stuck with something plain and lame.
