It had been a cake walk to find her old home. Her humans had lived here taking care of her only a few short weeks ago, but had left her just as quickly as they’d come into her life. One second they’d been at the shelter, to adopt a new dog she was certain, and the next they’d vanished without a trace. It had been a frantic few days spent searching for them, searching for any human at all, but despite her prowess and rama’jai she’d had no luck at all. Her old family was one lost item that she’d never find.
But it had been weeks since the earthquake, and she’d had her time to grieve. Now she was determined, at least, to reclaim her other things. All her stuff should still be tucked safely beneath her dog bed in the corner of the living room, she knew, and her favorite bag of dog treats was just atop the counter– if only she could find a way to reach. It was with the confidence of familiarity that Mosi’rarimiri ducked through the doggy door, the flap clicking softly shut as she entered the house.
She padded over to her old sleeping space and sighed with relief when she found all of her lovely collection beneath it as expected. Going over to the kitchen, though, yielded less desirable results. With all the food up for grabs and no one to claim it, other warm-blooded creatures had moved in— and they certainly weren’t canna.
Mosi’rarimi jumped back as two rats moved to bite at her ankles, missing her by a whisker. A high and nervous yip of alarm escaped her as a third and fourth rat spat and hissed at her, rushing forward to try and leap at her flank, thankfully only biting at fur and falling off when she gave her body a sharp and panicked shake.
”Help!” She barked out unabashedly, black eyes frustrated and nervous as she snapped her jaws towards one of the rats. ”Someone help me get rid of these chek!” Mosi could probably dispatch them herself, but she could only kill one at a time, and the others would most certainly take the time to bite her while she did.
She didn’t want to get hurt, or stain her precious fur with blood! And she most certainly would not be leaving without her collars or her snacks! It was only logical to ask anyone nearby for help, thanks ever so much!

| Mosi wasn't the only one sniffing around with treasures in mind. Ever since Navira had discovered that the vanishing humans had left behind unlocked dog flaps and unguarded houses, she had been keen to explore the inner workings of their homes in search of food and other useful items for her clan. It had been a glorious few weeks. As it turned out, humans were absolutely loaded. They hoarded food like chek, shoved into various little hiding holes inside of their homes. There were other treasures too. Blankets and warm things that could be dragged back home to make nests with. Toys for Tavi's litter to play with and balls for them to chase and strengthen their running legs. Navira had been quite popular with the clan's pata lately!
And then there were the odd human-specific items that Navira did not understand the purpose of. Some of her human-born clanmates had given names to these items, but that made them no less baffling. TV, forks and spoons, a toaster. (Apparently it ate bread and gave a toast as thanks, though Navira had not yet found one with either inside.)
She was just slipping out of a dog door in an overgrown front yard, jaws laden with now-stale foodstuffs, when she heard a dog cry out from inside a house across the street. Tall, speckled ears pricked high and eyes went wide with sparkling excitement. Her tail began to wag, eager at the thought of some survivor of the disappearances being inside one of the houses. Even if it was a pet, and one clearly in distress, perhaps it could give her some answers.
She quickly tucked her findings under the stairs of the house and bolted across the empty street to help. By the time she ducked through the little door at the front of the house, the scent and sounds of the dog had become much more familiar. This was only one of the shelter survivors. One that she knew quite well, actually. And she was in quite a state.
Navira stood taking in the sight before her for a split second before diving into the fray to pull a rat off of Mosi's haunches, shaking it hard until it went limp in her jaws. She spat the rodent out and then dove for another, missing this one entirely before turning back to the white dog with a friendly grin.
"Good morning, hali!" She greeted as if nothing were amiss with this gruesome scene. "I take it the chek weren't interested in striking a deal with Mosi'rarimiri today?"

When Navira came bursting through the dog door, Mosi’rarimiri was so relieved she could have whined. Thankfully she was able to suppress such a ren-like instinct, instead gracing the other she-dog with a slightly strained smile before she swatted one of the chek out of the air mid-lunge. The mottled dog was able to snatch one of them from her haunch before it could sink its teeth in, bless her heart, and the sudden reinforcements emboldened the white dog to make an attack of her own: a somewhat unpolished but still effective bite to the back of one rat’s neck quickly put it out of commission.
”It will be a good morning when they are dead, Navira!” She grumbled with a prim little sniff, such a dark sentence odd to hear from the typically cheerful and put-together canna. She couldn’t help it, though; she was deeply possessive, loathe to part with anything or anyone that she deemed hers but for a few exceptions. And a foursome of irritating check were not one of those exceptions.
”I can hardly believe it either. But put your name to good use, and perhaps I will strike a deal with you.” She tempted with a quirk of her lips– one that swiftly disappeared when she bent to snap at a little gray body. The empty clack of her teeth coming together told her that she had missed. Curses!
Apparently, though, the deaths of two of their companions and the prospect of two much larger dogs was enough to frighten the remaining two rats away, and they attempted to scamper past the two she-dogs. A shudder rolled up Mosi’s spine when one ran right over her paw. ”Ah, they are getting away! Which I suppose is fine, actually, as long as they don’t come back.” She squinted angrily after the fleeing bodies, black eyes brewing with displeasure before she nudged the two dead rats over towards Navira with a flippant paw.
”Your Why’o clan will eat these, yes? They’re all yours.” Her tone was notably friendlier now that she was no longer in danger of being bitten, great plume of a tail giving a few tentative shakes.

| Navira couldn't help but lunge childishly after the two fleeing rats, clicking her teeth threateningly at their haunches even though she knew she'd never actually catch them now. It was thrilling if only to strike fear into their cowardly little hearts. When they had scurried out of sight, she turned back to Mosi with an amused smile still stretched across her face.
"If they're smart, they'll tell all their friends to stay away." The mottled dog replied. "And most rats aren't stupid. They'll remember that this house might not have any humans, but they'll still be met with a mouthful of canna'kuruk."
She trotted over to sniff the bodies and came away with a snort through the nose. Nasty little things, but they'd definitely not be going to waste. "Oh yeah, we'd eat 'em! Lout is lout, you know? Canna can't afford to be picky out here. Is this what I get for our deal? I wouldn't mind sharing them with you, you killed half this lot after all, and it is your house!"
Navira didn't want to impose upon the white dog's generosity by taking the entire kill, but a part of her also worried for Mosi. She might not be clan, but she was still an important part of Why'o life. She had helped them out a number of times before...and she was just a good dog. Yet Navira couldn't help but see Mosi as a bit helpless right now. She had been reliant on humans to feed and shelter her for a very long time. For all intents and purposes, she was a pet, and Navira truly doubted that she'd be able to hunt properly for herself. If she needed half of the kill to get by without her humans, it was hers to take.

”I can only hope. I’ve walked the forest and encountered all manner of creatures, but I draw the line at chek!” Mosi’rarimiri huffed, though her tone now held an undercurrent of amusement now that the threat was gone. ”I saw a group of them invading a home three blocks down— it belonged to a chihuahua, though, so the size difference was not so much.” She giggled, approaching the chief with a jovial air. Of course, she’d assisted said chihuahua (receiving a scrumptious can of sardines for her trouble), but Navira didn’t need to know that. It wouldn’t do to come off as soft, of course!
”No, no, I wouldn’t compensate you with anything so simple as a rat. You killed them, so you earned them. But– oh, are you sure? I won’t say no, but I heard that Tavi’hu gave birth just last season. Or was it Tavi’elu? Either way, I wouldn’t want to deprive any ren of a meal.” She murmured, damnable softness shining through despite her best efforts.
”Anyway— I know you Why’os have been hurting for members ever since the quake. And I may have just the ticket. It’s just one dog, but– but from what I could tell, he was worth four.” Mosi didn’t know it herself, but her tone was practically honey when she brought up Askabi, even before she got into the details. The she-canna didn’t know it yet, but she was practically putty in his paws already.
”He’s a part of the— gosh, what was it? Right– the Ah’mir clan. But Navira, he’s been treated so horridly.” Her lips twisted into a gentle frown, body settling into a seated position. Navira had been good to her, allowing her to continue returning home despite the house being located on Why’o territory. Yes, she ran the odd job for the clan, but that still didn’t entitle her to a piece of their land, however small it was. She knew that the mottled dog’s kindness ran down to her bones, and that if any chief were to reintroduce Rapha’yona to the clan life he deserved, it would be Li’Navira.
”The chief there— they took his eye. He turned his fangs on one of his own! He named him Askabi, and it just— it doesn’t suit him at all. He was a little— hmm. Okay, he was a little rough around the edges, but I could tell that he has a good heart.” She gazed towards Navira earnestly. ”I promised him that I would query other chiefs. Would you be open to meeting with him, as li’canna of the Why’os? I am certain you would not regret it.”

| Navira couldn't help but smile along with the trader as she described a chihuahua trying to fend off a pack of chek. It must have been a pet - Or else the famed Rith'r Flik clan weren't worth the stories told about them. As Mosi came closer, Navira found her tail wagging in a friendly way, subconsciously letting the other canna know that she was comfortable with her closeness. She was, as always with the Why'os, with a friend.
"You're right!" She said, surprised that even Mosi would remember such a detail about clan-life. "Tavi'elu's got three ren. Two affa, one afu. They keep us all on our toes, I'll tell you that. They're only just starting to really get around, so I can''t imagine what trouble they're going to be when Ridna blinks again." The chief sat down and spoke as proudly as if they were her own litter. It was the whole clan's joyful accomplishment to see these little ones raised into healthy corporals. She did not insist again on Mosi taking a share of the rats. She would or she wouldn't, but she was done going back and forth on it.
The next statement though made her tall ears prick high, suddenly tuned in and very interested in what the other canna had to say. She listened intently as Mosi spoke of another clan, one that she was unfamiliar with. She told of a noble dog being held by this clan, this Ah'mir, that was being treated very poorly.
She found herself growling low under her breath when Mosi described how he had been stripped down to an askabi, how he had lost his eye at the teeth of their chief. Most clans refused to meddle in one another's affairs, especially when something as political as an askabi was involved. Yet Navira could see that her friend felt very strongly about this one. The fondness for the askabi oozed from her every word. It may have made a more experienced clan leader suspicious that they weren't getting the full truth about the dog's nobility.
Navira though, was in need of clanmates, Mosi had been right about that. The earthquake had decimated their numbers and yanked many of their most valuable members away for good.
A great part of her felt sorry for the dog in Mosi's story. It had been a very long time since the Why'o clan had had an askabi of their own, back when Navira was still a ren, yet the pitiful sight of that scarred, bullied and spat on shell of a dog was still burned into Navira's mind. It brought out a cruel side of both leaders and the clanmates that honored the shaming.
But a sliver of her mind also saw potential in an arrangement with this askabi. If he were to join her clan, she could potentially have a loyal new Why'o and the scoop on Ah'mir clan. They honestly sounded terrible, but she needed to know more.
"You've got me convinced, hali." She said, trying to sound as soothing as possible - Mosi sounded desperate. "If he's ready to leave his clan for good, then I'd be happy to meet with him. Where does Ah'mir take up territory? I don't think I know their huffa."

”Oh, how precious,” Mosi said with a small tilt of her head. She hadn’t actually encountered many pups in her life; the only ones she could remember had been on the cusp of adolescence, so she didn’t think they really counted. She wasn’t really sure how she felt about them personally, because on one hand, she’d heard stories of how absolutely adorable they were, and how much joy raising them had brought the mothers she’d met. But on the other hand… they were sticky. And she had a lot of fur. ”But what’s a Why’o without a little trouble mixed in? I’m sure they’ll grow to be lovely members of your clan.”She was relieved when the chief seemed to find Askabi’s treatment just as abhorrent as she had, if her growling was anything to go by. The way tension seeped out of her form at the she-dog’s agreement was almost palpable, her plume of a tail wagging furiously behind her. ”I knew you were the right dog to inform. They make their home over the river… I think they’ve claimed the forest beyond in its entirety. They’re sort of out of the way; I didn’t know it was claimed land until I was practically on top of it.” She informed the other dog thoughtfully. ”Anyhow, I’m not sure when he’ll call me.” If he called her. ”But when he does, I’ll approach you to see if you’re free to meet with him. I’ll bay real loud too so your ferocious prison guards don’t think I’m trying to pull one over them.” She jested with a sly smile. ”But while I have you here… anyone in the Why’o interested in striking a deal?”Li'Navira'e Hu'grair let’s go ahead and call it done? |
