★⸻𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒊⸻★ Askabi paced the border, his mind clearly in turmoil as he thought over his options. He could stay and continue this torture, deal with the abandonment of his peers and the constant abuse from Damien and his followers--or he could leave. Honestly, he was scared by the thought of leaving. It seemed to simple; could his problems really disappear just by separating himself from the Ah'mir pack?
Suddenly, the shepherd mix stiffened, his tail beginning to straighten out behind him from where it was once lowered. His hackles began to raise, and a growl slowly built in his chest. Every muscle was tense; his single pale eye shifting restlessly as his sensitive nose picked up a smell. Then there was the quiet movement of paws against soil.
He couldn't help but worry that someone from the pack was watching him. His heart immediately sped up with adrenaline as he knew Damien would consider this another move against his leadership.
"Who's there?" He remained rooted in place, his voice a low snarl and ears beginning to anxiously lower against his skull.

The dark shepherd moved solemnly through the trees. He had no destination in mind. He allowed his legs to carry him aimlessly, wandering without direction. His heart was heavy and his stomach was empty. The once sheen, black coat was now ragged and tattered and his full figured form had been reduced to a skeletal appearance.
The past month had been hard on the young canine. First came the shaking and splitting of the earth beneath his paws, then came the loss of the world he had once known. His human, his one love and the one who loved him, had disappeared. In his search he had encountered a rag-tag group of misfits, also lost, alone, and confused in this new world order. He had followed them only briefly as they set to search the remains of the city until branching off to find his own path. In doing so he had managed to find the home he had once known in shambles. For days he waited for his human to return the same as she had always done before. It seemed, however, that she had gone to a place he could not find. The large mutt had refused to wander far from this shelter, its familiarity granted him a strange sense of comfort. He would, however, wander a wider and wider perimeter as the weeks wore on, searching for any edible scraps of food he could dig up. Only after more than a full moon cycle had passed did he begin to fully lose hope. She wasn't coming. He was well and truly alone. At this realization, he began to observe the lack of any humans. Surely they had all abandoned him.
As he sauntered onward a low sound granted him pause. A warning. A growl. He continued forward towards the voice that called out to him, revealing himself fully and willingly. At the mere sight of another living being, especially one of his own kind, his tail began to move in a slow wag. He wasn't alone. He didn't have to be alone anymore!
His ears perked at the thought and he lifted his head from its hanging, dejected position. "I'm Thomas," he said in a gruff voice that had gone unused for nearly a month's time. The shepherd had never been granted a proper canna name. He took a few friendly steps closer to the other canine, his tail continuing to sway in a slow, wide arch. He cleared his throat before continuing. His orange eyes shined bright with elation. "It's great to finally see another face. Who are you?"

★⸻𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒊⸻★ Askabi was honestly startled when the black male openly revealed himself without hesitancy. The brute's brain seemed to short circuit as his body instantly seemed to become less tense. His hackles lowered and his ears immediately perked at the friendly display. This... Thomas, he called himself, was rather large but a bit thin. He could be a threat if he wanted to be.
Askabi sniffed at the air, taking in his smell, and there it was. There was an incredibly faint human smell to him that explained socialization. Askabi considered turning away, leaving the scene and never putting thought to this fella again. But something stopped him, maybe the shine on hope in the other dog's eyes.
"I'm.." A short hesitation, rotating through his many names before settling, "Rapha'yona." He was a stranger, he did not need to know his rank.
His tail began to mirror Thomas, a low, cordial wag as the threatening display he held before began to melt away. He couldn't turn away such a friendly face. "Are you alone?"
Worried he may make the other canna anxious, he backtracked a bit. "I mean, because you look hungry--nothing nefarious." He huffed, truly hoping he didn't just make this poor dog return to his lonely life.

Thomas's genuine and friendly demeanor did not sway as he took in the sight of the shepherd standing across from him. The wild dogs tended to be more timid with a touch of additional aggression from his own experience. They lived a much more feral and dangerous lifestyle than the young male was accustomed to, it was fairly easy to understand their reactions to him.
The darker furred dog's makeshift companion gave his name, though he seemed to struggle with it a bit. 'Rapha'yona,' he considered silently to himself. 'That's a silly name.' His mind wandered briefly to his last canine interaction. Many of those dogs had had similar sounding names of what seemed to almost be nonsense to him. But, then again, all names were nonsense. What was the difference between this dog referring to himself as "Rapha'yona" and a human walking by the street yelling at "Shiloh" to stop sniffing at him as they passed? His interactions with others of his kind had been so limited in his less than two years on earth that he hardly knew or understood most canna ways.
Thomas's warm heartedness was addictive and it showed as the other male began to relax, letting his own guard down even if only slightly. The black mutt had failed to put his guard up at all. By all accounts in his mind he had no reason to. He lowered himself into a sitting position, his tail brushing dead leaves and dirt back and forth slowly on the ground, leaving the ground directly behind him bare.
"Are you alone?"
"Yes," he answered honestly and without hesitation, nearly cutting into Rapha'yona's dialogue.
"I mean, because you look hungry--nothing nefarious."
"Oh, I am," he admitted a little sheepishly. "I haven't even seen another living soul in..." He paused briefly, trying to count the days. "Well, at least one whole moon cycle. No canna or..." His voice began to trail as he added "...humans." He was feeling a little embarrassed about his whole situation. Not only did it leave a pit in his stomach and an ache in his heart in his belief that he had failed his human somehow by losing her, but other canines he had encountered after the earthquake had seemed less bothered on the loss of the species. His tail stiffened at the thought and ceased its soft wagging. His eyes dropped to his paws in front of him. His posture slouched.
Fighting back against himself, he shook the intrusive ideas from his mind and lifted his gaze back up to meet Rapha'yona's eye. He was no longer alone, and that was something to be celebrated. In fact, the dogs he had met before had not been alone, either. They had what seemed to be some strong sense of comradery that he vied for now. Maybe this shepherd would know something about them. Maybe he was even with them!
"I've actually been looking for someone -er- thing. A clan of dogs somewhere around these parts. Have you seen them?" he asked, a twinge of hope piercing his heart at the idea.
In reality, he had no clue as to where those dogs would be and he had not actually been actively searching for anyone or anything in particular. However, the idea, now that it had come to him, had seemed too appealing to pass up.

★⸻𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒊⸻★ Askabi was startled and pleased when the dog answered to earnestly and without hesitation. It was so strange to meet a canine that wasn't in the mindset that everyone was out to get them. While he didn't react on it, he could sense an immense feeling of dread taking over Thomas as he began to speak on how alone he has been.
The shepherd mix didn't have the worst experience with humans, even in the shelter he felt a bit at peace. However, if given the choice he definitely wanted the freedom of the forest. Askabi understood what it felt like to be left behind, so he needed to be the dog to calm Thomas' worried mind.
"You weren't abandoned." His single, pale eye was shimmering with emotion despite the deadpan voice. "All the humans are gone. I've heard stories from dogs claiming they vanished right before their eyes." He slowly seated himself to mirror Thomas as he grunted, "whatever the case, I'm sure your human didn't want to leave you."
Then his pelt was prickling and discomfort was shivering down his spine when the black pooch mentioned what he was looking for. "You're on the border of the Ah'mir clan currently." His expression was serious, feeling dread for this young canna that reminded Askabi of the hopeful hound he once was.
"I won't stop you from continuing your venture into theirs lands if you choose. However, I will warn you that as a former member... You will need to keep your guard up." His single eye dashed about, almost expecting an Ah'mir packmate to come from the brush.

Black ears perked at the canine's response and then folded in a small degree of despair. Just another someone confirming that the humans were gone. Thomas had seen it with his very own bright eyes, yet he refused to believe it. "I'm sure your human didn't want to leave you." The dark furred shepherd's tail flipped in the dirt behind him. She didn't. She would never. He knew this.
His full attention turned towards his companion as he spoke. "You're on the border of the Ah'mir clan currently." Ah'mir? Was that right? It didn't sound right. But, then again, few words seemed to. No matter how hard he pressed his brain he could not think of the name the other canna had gone by. Yes. It must have been the Ah'mir. Thomas jumped to his feet in excitement, his mouth hanging open in a wide smile and his tail wagging quickly behind him. Then, his excitement ceased, if only momentarily.
"I won't stop you from continuing your venture into theirs lands if you choose. However, I will warn you that as a former member... You will need to keep your guard up."
The mutt's head tilted slightly in confusion. Former member? Guard up? The dogs had not seemed all that aggressive during his prior interactions. Perhaps much had changed in the time he had spent in his small, old homestead. He shook his head, shaking off the warning and returning his features to that of a happy, seemingly carefree dog.
"The Ah'mir, huh?" He glanced towards the presumed border, his expression turning quizzical. "Why don't you come with me, Rapha'yona? I've met these dogs before. Surely they can't be that bad?" His tone was hopeful and his demeanor friendly. He was positive this was all just some big misunderstanding. "At least.... they didn't seem that bad..." The waving flag of a tail drooped only slightly at the thought.
He was certain that if he could find a home among the other canna he would be ready for when the humans returned. As it currently stood, without help he was proving unable to survive on his own, let alone thrive. No, surely those dogs he had met over a month ago would take him in. They had been so keen on others joining their clan before. But still, it did not make a lick of sense to him why Rapha'yona would want to leave. The thought never even crossed Thomas's mind that he may have found the wrong group.

If this is to end in fire we should all burn together The black shepherd marched through the railway forest. It hadn't been long since the former Why'O had joined the Ah'mir clan, and it was shaping up to her expectations. Even so, her time with the clan thus far was short. There were still many things she didn't know. Currently, she walked the border to familiarize herself with the new territory. She couldn't do her job properly if she didn't know what to expect. The corporal had to know every inch of the territory to be at her best. It wasn't long before voices reached her ears. One was familiar, but the other was a stranger. Moving forward with a renewed intent, she pushed through the foliage to come across the scarred face of Askabi and the black form of an unfamiliar canna. She didn't know much about the shepherd mix, only that he'd betrayed Chief Damien. Such disloyalty could not be accepted. Hassi'onakah pulled her lips back in a snarl, "What are you doing, Askabi?" What reason did he have to hang so close to the border? If he wanted to leave, she saw no reason to stop him. He'd already proved untrustworthy. Chief Greyo'miera had already been too kind in allowing the vagrant to stay. Her snarl rescinded as she turned an eye on the newcomer. Though gruff, her tone wasn't unwelcoming, "Who are you? Do you seek to join the Ah'mir?" The shadowed canna didn't look particularly strong, but the Chief would likely welcome him regardless. Hope that's okay!

★⸻𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒊⸻★ Askabi stared at the border as Thomas approached it. Everything about the black dog's stance was hopeful. The shepherd-mix didn't want to be the one to destroy that hope his new companion held. His expression became almost sad, but a faint smile was on his muzzle as he remained rooted where he sat. He had to remember that just because his destiny was already written and finished with the Ah'mir clan, it didn't mean Thomas' was--nor did it mean this kind, sable dog couldn't change the history of the dynasty.
"It was unfair of me to say that. My experience is just that, my own. You should see if you find what you are looking for there." The same sad smile was still present on his lips as he gently shook his head. "But I can't go with you."
Then it finally happened, one of his soon-to-be former packmates witnessed the scene and addressed him. She called him by that damn title, and he knew then and there Thomas would assume the worst. And who could blame him? Askabi has not had the time to discuss his circumstances.
"Hassi'Onakah." He barely greeted her as his hackles subconsciously raised as his tail stiffened at the sight of her. His pale gaze shifted towards the she-dog and his expression immediately flattened. He nodded his head towards Thomas loosely. "Was taking a walk and met this lad."
He glanced to Thomas' eyes, looking for any signs of distrust on that once friendly face.

The dark-furred canna's semi-floppy ears drooped at the answer he had received. Rapha'yona was not willing to accompany him back to the clan territory. Here he had gotten his hopes up that he had made a friend. What was he thinking? Of course they could still be friends! Unless that wasn't permitted... He raised a brow at the thought. Were pack dogs allowed to have non-pack dog friends? He had no clue, not even the slightest inclination of knowledge on the subject. He was certainly not unaware of the concept of rules. His human had set rules in place for him when she was around - no pooping in the house, no tearing at the furniture, no stealing her socks - and there were even some regarding his interactions with other canna - no calling to them from the other side of the window, no knocking down the small ones at the park, and on and on. He was certain, though, that if he wanted to quell his loneliness he would need to learn and live by the laws set in place by his fellow canines.
As he opened his mouth to speak his attention turned to that of another canna. A dark shadow of a figure emerged from the trees, nearly a reflection of what he could become - if he weren't young, malnourished and... male. His eyes swiveled to meet hers as she spoke, her voice sounding somewhat sour yet commanding with an underlying confidence.
"What are you doing, Askabi?"
'Who? Me?' the internal thought streamed through his mind but was left non-verbalized. Thomas tilted his head and looked back over to Rapha'yona, his gaze shifting between the two of them. She seemed to be addressing the older, one-eyed shepherd. 'They must be friends,' Thomas concluded. Perhaps askabi was some sort of nickname? He had no understanding of the term. It had never even been a concept he had been made privy to. There had never been a situation in his life that had led the mutt to have a use for such a word. His tail wagged softly in greeting as he kept quiet so as not to interrupt the two.
"Who are you? Do you seek to join the Ah'mir?"
Thomas was slightly taken aback as she addressed him, almost as if he hadn't expected to be regarded by the female. He found himself lacking for words as his brain raced to find an answer. "M-my name i-is.. T-Thomas," he stuttered awkwardly. He struggled to compose himself. "I mean, I'm Thomas," he tried again, attempting to sound more suave and save face. He stood to his full height and his tail swayed slowly back and forth in a friendly manner. Keeping a healthy amount of eye contact he continued, "I was just talking to your friend here about the Ah'mir."
His mouth hung open in his contagious smile that worked to accentuate his chummy demeanor.

If this is to end in fire we should all burn together Askabi's barebones greeting went unnoticed by Hassi'onakah. She hadn't expected much else from him. Traitor as he was, etiquette seemed like it would be a foreign concept to him. She expected nothing from him. A walk. There was nothing wrong with that. He was in the clear. "Very well," she huffed, finding no further reason to antagonize the one-eyed shepherd. Her business with Askabi done, she turned her attention to Thomas as he introduced himself. He was a black shepherd much like herself though without the white that streaked her chest. He was far more gaunt than she was. Clearly, he hadn't been well-off. Though she saw his smile and the wag of his tail, she didn't express the same sentiments. Her posture remained neutral, and she turned an analytical eye on him. The use of friend caught her by surprise. She looked suspiciously on Askabi, "I would not call us friends." There were many words she could use to describe them, but friends or anything like it wasn't one of them. "The Ah'mir are my clan," glancing at Askabi, she corrected herself, "Our clan." If it was about the Ah'mir, Askabi likely didn't have anything nice to say about them. "If you seek to join us, you're going in the right direction." Notes and things can go here

★⸻𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒊⸻★ Thankfully, it seemed Thomas had lived the majority of his life amongst humans, so he didn't seem to bat an eye at the name term 'Askabi'. The shepherd-mix met Hassi'Onakah's gaze when she confirmed that they were indeed not friends. He didn't deny that claim, instead he took the time to give his pelt a good shake. It allowed his composure to relax a bit now that he had overcome the shock of her catching him on his walk.
Thankfully, though he was the lowest dog on the totem pole in the Ah'mir, he wasn't exactly forced to stay in the camp for the rest of eternity. He honestly couldn't decide if they would be relieved or enraged when they realized he was planning to leave and never return.
Poor Thomas was stumbling over his words and smiling like a goof. It took everything in Askabi not to snatch the fella up and take him away from this damned clan. He had to keep his cool.
He slowly approached the younger, black brute and gently nosed his shoulder. There was that difficult expression on his face again as he spoke lightly to Thomas. "How about Hassi'Onakah leads you to the clan? If you're interested in joining a pack, the best way to see if you're a good fit is to meet the members."
He peeked towards the she-dog once more, his tail low as he then glanced towards the border--the line that separated him from freedom. "I would like to continue my walk." He kept his voice from wavering as adrenaline pulsed through his veins. His mind was made, this would be his final day with the Ah'mir.

The swaying black tail paused momentarily at the female's words. He had been too caught up in his own embarrassment to notice her correction regarding the two belonging to the clan so he had made no comment on Rapha'yona's prior statement. What had caused him to pause was the invitation to join. He had seemed so confident in his decision before but now he was unsure. The question tickled at the back of his mind, teasing him with an answer but none seemed to come to his lips.
The skin at the base of the shepherd's shoulder twitched at a light touch. Turning his attention back to the single-eyed canine his tail began its slow, awkward wag once again. His tongue lolled from the side of his mouth as he spoke.
"Oh... yes! That is a great idea," he stated in response.
His features drooped only momentarily at the reminder that the older male had no intention of joining the two, opting to continue on his walk. There was some small form of loyalty that had sparked within the dark mutt. It was that same feeling he had felt towards the canna, Navira, whom he had encountered after the world fell apart. Being the first friendly face to encounter after disaster brought with it a strange sense of friendship and comradery. The same held true now, after a month of solidarity and loneliness. Rapha'yona had been the first of any living soul he had encountered, with an added bonus of not outright killing, injuring, or even attacking the smaller canine. His was a friendly face - through Thomas's eyes - in a world currently filled with bleak tragedy.
He turned his attention to the shadow coated company. A meek smile crossed his muzzle as he approached nearer to her, ready to follow her lead. The air surrounding the trio had a heavy feeling of dominance laced about it now. No doubt this was coming from the more serious canna, Hassi'onakah. Thomas couldn't help but instinctively respond to this sensation and carried himself as such. His head was kept low, though not dangling, and he never fully held her gaze, ensuring his eyes would only meet her momentarily at each instance. His tail continued to wag in short, slow arches as a sign of appeasement.
"I'll see you later, then," he halfheartedly replied, glancing over his shoulder at the other male, unsure if the statement was to be true or not.
His heart held no fear. It only retained a renewed sadness with a twinge of loss.

If this is to end in fire we should all burn together Hassi'onakah was a newer member of the Ah'mir. She had no place acting as commanding as she did. But she was, by nature, a serious sort of canine. Everything had its order, and she would maintain that order. While she didn't like how it felt like she was following Askabi's order by agreeing with his idea of taking Thomas back, she did think it was the best course of action. If this Thomas was truly interested in joining the Ah'mir, better her than Askabi showing him the clan. The black she-dog didn't spare the brown shepherd more than a glance at his request. "Fine," she said briefly. She had no reason to stop him. Her gaze trailed the gaunt Thomas, sharp and stern. In response to his appeasing actions, she held herself tall with her ears up and tail raised slightly. "I'll show you to the clan," she stated. Hassi'onakah turned a sideways look on Askabi, suspicion and a warning in them, "Don't cause any trouble."
