"I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. BUT I KNOW I'M DOING IT REALLY, REALLY WELL."
|
| The sun was shining, the snows were melting, and spring was clearly well on its way. And with it...rain. Lots of it. Rain and squishy, splashy puddles of muck all around Ah'mir's glass base. Not content to stay inside of the old greenhouse and clearly not having enough tasks to keep him busy, Kahru bounded from the great glass building and dove paws first into a pool of brown muck.
The big puppy grinned mischievously as mud oozed between his oversized feet. He splashed a few times for good measure, ensuring that his long legs were coated completely in wet earth, and then turned and ran into the greenhouse and back out again, happily entertaining himself on this stormy day - And very much lost in a round of hyperactive puppy zoomies. It was surely a sight that would make someone look twice before realizing that they were seeing a ren, not a full grown dog. Kahru was thriving in Ah'mir, growing under their care as fast as any of their flowers. Yet his features were still not proportionate - A close look would reveal that he was just a really big pup.
In his wake was a trail of muddy pawprints and little puddles that showed he'd been at this for a while. Earlier that morning, he'd breezed right through the busywork that Castor had given him and then found himself almost completely alone back at the base. The only dogs that weren't out pulling or border-watching were the guards, and Kahru knew from experience that they wouldn't bother talking to him.
It was only when the rain started that the big puppy had found a way to entertain himself - And here he was now, completely covered in muck and having the time of his life.

Shivers of cold racked their way up the small canna's spine as the rain poured down from above. Rain was nothing new to the ren, she had experienced it before, though she never really cared for it as her favorite form of weather. It sure did beat the chill of the small flurries of snow she had seen in the past few months. Splashing through puddles harbored no sense of appeal to the young female. There had been too many instances where she had jumped into what she had believed to be a shallow pool only for it to suck her into its hidden, swampy depths nose-deep. Getting a nose full of muck never sounded like much fun, especially when it led to the coughing and hacking fits and a burning in her small lungs.
The sight of another canna sparked her interest. Off only a short distance away she laid witness to a larger male barrelling in and out of a large structure, jumping and playing in the mud. Excitement flooded through her, rushing through her veins and causing a tremor to wholly shake the small body. Her tail wagged as she watched him and she found herself initiating a play bow, even at a distance she was surely not noticed - especially considering the agouti pup was focused on his own fun. She let out a yip of excitement and bounded forward on her short legs, stumbling briefly every few steps as she tended to lose her footing when moving at a quickened pace.
She approached her newfound companion from behind, leaping at his legs and following him into the fray. Instincts from a far away ancestry caused the puppy to unconsciously nip at the male's back legs as she followed him, showing herding tendencies. Losing her footing in a slick patch of mud, the pup tumbled head over tail into the grime, completely coating her fur in a thick, brown liquid. She let out a yelp in surprise as she fell. Upon regaining her senses, she let out an audible giggle and began to splash around in the shallow puddle with her front paws, leading herself in a sort of tippy-tap dance before jumping back to her feet and giving another play bow at the larger canna. Her tail wagged excitedly as she indicated her desire to continue the game.

He figured that in his few moons of maturity, Kahru'hu would have found something productive to do while Castor was away patrolling the borders and reestablishing huffa getting washed away by rain. Alas, it seemed he had yet to teach his apprentice the concept of self-discipline. The brash yips of a young voice were all he needed to hear to know he was about to give one hell of an earful to an awfully lanky mudball. Rounding the corner of the glass house, following the horribly dirty trails of muddy pawprints, Castor's voice snapped out, "Kahru'hu you had better not be ruining the grass for the next three moons! Gods only know we don't need Akoda's pups slipping right off the bat." Maybe he should incorporate Tavi into his canna name as well. It seemed to run in the family.
Angular eyes peered sternly around the corner before being followed by the rest of the drenched hound. His paws squelched in the mud as he came to a sharp stop. What in the hell was this? Kahru, drenched as ever, was most definitely standing in the pouring rain as guilty as could be. Near him stood - maybe even squatted - some kind of foot-long foot-tall mudball. It yapped again, the sound registering with Castor that it was not in fact his young apprentice but instead this new canna barking her head off. "What are you doing here, ro'ren?" He questioned, his voice not nearly as soft as when he had met Kahru for the first time, but notably moreso than his commanding barks previously.

| If he weren't so wrapped up in his own delightful, muddy game, Kahru might have noticed the little stranger sooner. As it stood though, he didn't spot her coming through the torrents of rain and muck until she gave him a well-placed nip on his haunches. With a startled gasp, the bigger pup flew sky high and whirled with a comical growl, ready to meet his attacker.
What he met instead was, to his delight, a tinier version of himself, right down to the mud that currently coated their grey coat. Before he could really question this new development in his life, the little pup slipped and fell into the muck face-first, making Kahru belt out a laugh. The newcomer laughed too, and before long Kahru found himself slapping his front paws down messily in a play bow of his own.
And then, as children often do, the two were soon romping and playing together in the mud, having a grand old time without ever having shared a word or even their names. He matched her energy and even tried out a few big barks of his own to compete with her yapping, but he soon found that she was basically the chief of barking. She was really good at using her voice.
It was only when Castor's voice broke out that Kahru suddenly stopped and turned, ears perked high with the realization that maybe he should have asked where his new friend had come from. She definitely wasn't a part of the clan.
Kahru bowed his head as Castor approached, trying his best to be respectful under the circumstances.
"I'm sorry, Castor!" He barked, giving his muddy tail a sheepish little wag. But Castor wasn't very interested in his apprentice right now. His focus (and a little bit of wrath) was on the short grey pup. Before she could answer, Kahru blurted childishly, "She's my friend! We were playing and I uh...I kind of forgot to ask where she came from? But she's not a threat, I promise!" As if he really knew a thing about this pup aside from the fact that she was really good at splashing in mud.

The rambunctious little she-pup giggled and ran with the larger pup, diving in and out between his legs and into the muck. Her eyes squinted through her mud-soaked face in a pure bliss. It had been so funny when she had startled the giant and he had jumped up in the air out of fright. She could not manage to keep her mouth shut in the slightest during their play. Between her playful bouts of laughter she filled the air with loud yaps and puppyish yipping. Their game had progressed from just running and splashing into a war of the voices. The only moments she remained silent were the brief instances of her nipping at his long, lanky legs.
Suddenly, the game stopped. A third voice rang out amongst them and it seemed to stop the larger pup dead in his tracks. When the male bowed his head towards the approaching adult, Rayli took advantage of the opportunity and jumped up towards his face. Bounding up and down as high as her stubby legs would take her and attempting to nip her new friend's nose to re-initiate their game.
She had completely failed to acknowledge the older canna's inquiry and paid no mind to her playmate's answers. His lack of response to her attempts at play were beginning to feel a bit discouraging. Now, the larger male had her attention. Turning to face him, she waddled directly up to the stranger and slapped her feet on the ground, sending a small splash of mud onto the other canna's paws. With her invite to play established, she began a series of short hops on her stunted legs. The action could almost be mistaken for a sort of dance. Diving in with an intent to nip the tall, red and white legs, she stumbled over her own front feet and slipped, gliding smoothly through the oozing, wet earth on her back. Her tail wagged gleefully and, through a wide smile, she let out another playful giggle.

A bleated apology from the larger of the mudballs was only minorly appreciated. The very least Kahru'hu could do was apologize, the appropriate thing would be to explain. Right on cue, "She's my friend! We were playing and I uh...I kind of forgot to ask where she came from? But she's not a threat, I promise!" Castor squeezed his eyes shut as a sigh of annoyance puffed into the unrelenting rain. This pup. This apprentice. He didn't think he really needed to have the 'don't talk to strangers' chat with Kahru'hu now that he was an Ah'mir dog, especially on clan territory, but alas. The hound did meet him as a stranger after all. He would have to remind the smokey ren later.
Turning his attention back to the younger pup with nothing more than a hum in response to Kahru, he hastily lifted his paws as the splashes and nips of the little thing came at him. Her final slide through the mud ended with her bumping into his hind legs as he had lifted the front ones out of the way of her tiny barrage. He placed them back down gently around the small pup, careful to differentiate between mud and fluffy mud. Huffing out another sigh, Castor's gaze turned to Kahru once more, "You can't trust strangers just because they are small or playful, Kahru'hu. This is Ah'mir territory and trespassing isn't tolerated. You and I are going to take your new... friend to see Li'Greyo. Maybe she'll have more to say to him." Dipping his head between his legs, he chuffed out softly, "Are you lost? Would you like to come with us?" He kept his head stretched between his front legs as he awaited a response (hopefully) from the mud-covered eclair.

| Kahru'hu knew better than to talk back during Castor's lecture. He remained humbled, head bowed, quietly nodding and hoping with all hope that he hadn't gotten his new friend into too much trouble. It was only when his mentor suggested that they take her to see the chief that Kahru finally met the older dog's gaze with a look of dismay.
He opened his mouth to protest, but clipped it shut again just as fast. Facing his mentor was one thing. Facing Chief Li'Greyo was another. But it wasn't his decision to make and he was already in enough trouble.
And yet...his curiosity still got the better of him when Castor bent and began to speak softly to the short little ren. With ears perked forward, Kahru found himself creeping forward without a word to listen to the conversation, if only to find out who she was once and for all before Li'Greyo sent her away. (But maybe he wouldn't! She was REALLY nice!

A brief feeling of dismay sparked through the young pup. No one was paying attention to her. Why wouldn't they pay attention? Why wouldn't they play?
The larger of the two - who she now lay beneath in the muck - spoke in a harsher tone to the big puppy she had engaged with prior. When he bent down to address her she couldn't stop her tail from wagging in the mud. She peered through her curled up paws that were pressed against her chest to meet his gaze as he spoke. Her head cocked to the side in curiosity at his words. Lost? Her ear flicked before she opted to roll back onto her feet.
With all four paws finally beneath her once again on the slick but solid ground, she waddled up to the white muzzled face. With a playful smile she gave a soft nip to the dudley nose, the front of her teeth barely brushing his skin in the play bite. The action was immediately met with a quick lash of her tongue before she waltzed out from beneath the ibizan. Her ambling movements and wandering appeared aimless. However, the question caused a moment of pause in her step.
"Lost?" she asked, turning to face the adult canna once again. Her head tilted slightly at the question. "Lost," she stated more decisively as she turned to face the larger ren. "Lost lost lost lost lost lost lost lost..." Her words were repeated in a sing-song sort of way as she happily pranced around in the mud. Her legs were lifted high - or as high as she could lift them - in her march, allowing her to create fun splashes and send the muck and slop flying up around her front two paws. It wasn't long before she was yipping the mantra in a loud shout as she danced around in her small, mud splashing circle.

The little mudball seemed to be much more receptive to his questions than Kahru was to his newfound responsibilities. Stout legs managed to flip the young ren over without her even needing to wriggle out from under him. He watched down his snout, curious to see what this pup would say before sharp teeth nearly snapped at his nose. The frown that fell onto his face was only slightly appeased by her playful lick. If she stayed here she would need to learn how to have some respect for her clanmates.
"Lost?" she said, waddling through the mud. For a moment, the hound was worried she was going to wander away again like one of the toys his humans had once tried to please him with. He wasn't about to lose another pup so soon, but he figured he would have time to catch her considering her stature lent her more to swimming in the mud than walking over it. As the little she-pup began to dance around, just singing the word 'lost' over and over again, Castor's posture straightened and he turned to his apprentice. The fluffy ren's face gave his silent protest away, but luckily his quick thinking to keep his mouth shut saved him from more chastising. "Gather her up. I think she likes playing with you more than listening to me. We're going to see Li'Greyo," he directed, swinging his snout at the dancing pup before looking back to his apprentice expectantly.

| Kahru watched in dismay as his new friend danced around, only half-answering Castor's questions...if one could even call her chant an answer at all. In his mind he pleaded with her to show his mentor some respect so that she didn't get tossed back across the river by their seniors, but still he kept his mouth closed. Castor was already mad at him and kind of annoyed with his little chatterbox...and she was digging a hole for herself well enough on her own.
And then the decision was made once and for all. They were going to see the chief. Kahru's ears perked up at Castor's command and his eyes were cast quickly on the bouncing little bundle of mud.
"Gather her up?" He mumbled, but didn't press it further. Instead, he trotted over and bent to grasp the pup by her scruff. He intended to lift her up and carry her like Castor had done a few times with him when he was little, but her weight combined with her slick, muddy coat were too much. He quickly abandoned that plan and set to bargaining with the ren instead.
"You've gotta come with us." He said, bending down to her level. "We're gonna go see our chief, but maybe if you're good, he'll let you stay and then we can play some more. Can you come with us?"
The big grey pup bent his frame into a play bow once more, waggling his rump in a friendly way.

Pressure on the back of the ren's neck stopped her from her little mud dance. She hadn't been paying attention to the other canna and failed to notice the fluffy one approach her. She squirmed as he had attempted to pick her up, only adding to the problem. A confusing feeling flooded her mind. The soft mouthing on the back of her neck made her both uncomfortable but also brought back a soothing memory. She had been grabbed like that before - albeit more successfully. The fun-loving giggle returned to her, bubbling up in her mouth as she was set free again and turned to face her aggressor - or playmate.
The larger pup lowered himself to make eye contact with her. Her tail wagged furiously as he spoke. Her front paws moved in a tippy-tap sort of dance as she repressed the urge to nip his face now that he was at her level. His voice sounded almost serious though, so she tried her best to contain herself. Those were a lot of words, though...
"Come with us?" she parroted back at him. If not for his immediate play bow that enticed her back into play she might have started to feel frustrated with her lack of comprehension. Living alone for so long at such a young age had done her no favors socially. With a grin she immediately reciprocated his gesture with a bow of her own. She moved as quickly as her stubby legs could carry her to leap towards his lowered head. Placing her paws on the side of his face, she nipped at the nape of his neck in a form of mimicry before pushing herself off of him and, once again, stomping in the mud.
One of those words he had said stood out to her. It was a word she had heard before.
"Good?" she asked, turning to him for confirmation. "Good ren!" Her tail wagged in excitement as she spun in a short circle before waddling after her two newfound friends.
