March 11th; Heavy rain all dayIt was raining hard outside. The sound of the drops of rain were very loud but at the same time it was comforting. There was no sunshine and the sky was covered with heavy gray clouds. Akoda was asleep in the greenhouse. Akoda's belly was very large, heavy, and swollen with puppies. She didn't like to move a lot and stayed on her mix of large, comfortable blankets she scavenged earlier in her pregnancy. She woke up from a long nap and let out a huge yawn. Then a sharp pain came from her stomach, and it really hurt. Then it happened. Her contractions started. Akoda let out a few pained whines but kept her cool. She was a strong great dane but the contractions really hurt. She let out another pained whine. The three healers that Ah'mir had stayed close to Akoda for the past few days knowing she was in her final stages of pregnancy. All the healers noticed Akoda was in labor when they heard her pained whine. One of the healers spoke to the other two healers. "You, go get Damien! And you, go get some Pata'mira flowers for Akoda to eat so the coming pups will be strong, and two Thudi so she can eat when all the pups are born!" The healer who gave the orders rushed to Akoda, making an attempt to soothe her. "Stay calm Akoda. I promise everything will be just fine. Breathe." The healer put a paw on Akoda's belly, and saw her contractions were getting stronger slowly but surely. The healer could see Akoda was in pain. The healer's job was to keep Akoda calm and make sure things went smoothly. "Ok, now start pushing. You can do this."Akoda followed the healer's instructions and started to push. It would be a long process but Akoda knew she could do this. She breathed as she felt the contractions getting stronger. With the healer next to her it was comforting, but the pain made it hard to stay calm. Now she was focused on bringing her puppies into the world.

Heavy rain on the top of the greenhouse was a sound that the hound had managed to get used to over the past few moons. At first, it was hard to sleep on the hard floor of the greenhouse with little but a scavenged blanket. He had only just managed to get used to the cold when the snow shifted to rain and provided an extra layer of difficulty. How anyone could actually get to sleep in there during the storm was a mystery to the lanky hound, but he figured it beat being outside in the rain.
The sound of the healers barking caught his ears as he plodded back to the greenhouse. He had been out trying to improve his hunting skills, and in his maw hung a freshly killed thudu. The little thing wasn't as plump as it would've been in April once the spring grasses had thawed out a bit more, but winter had treated the small mammal well. Upon hearing the call for food to be brought to Akoda, he approached and stopped a short distance away. "I've got a fresh thudu here!" he called out to the healers scrambling for flowers and prey in their little coordinated unit. He approached Akoda's head, with no intention of actually seeing the birthing process. Quite frankly, it would put him off eating for a little while if he caught sight of it so he kept his body facing toward Akoda's head while giving plenty of space for the healers to move around. He didn't really know what to do in this situation. Clearly, she was in pain, but he hoped she would at least be happy once her pups were born. "You've got this, Akoda. The healers have got you and there's a fresh thudu for you for all your hard work," he spoke, almost monotonous in his uncertainty of what to do. Hopefully it supported his clanmate well enough.

If this is to end in fire we should all burn together Hassi'onakah sat at attention off to the side. She had taken on something of a guard persona. The ever attentive black shepherd was always ready to follow the commands of Akoda and Chief Greyo'miera. As the rain fell outside, her eyes focused on their surrondings with her ears tuned to Akoda. When the contractions started, she was quick to move to her feet. If Akoda needed thudu, then that was what she would get. Castor's appearance was met with a brief nod as she moved past him. Grabbing one from the kill pile, she presented it to Akoda, "Please have some, Lady Akoda."
Akoda was not the chief's mate, but she was the one bearing Chief Greyo'miera's pups. For that, she was important enough for Hassi'onakah to show her as much loyalty and deference as she did the Chief. "What else is needed?" she barked. Given that she was no healer, she could only respond to the requests of the healers. Even so, the lady should be made as comfortable as possible. She was of great importance. Hope that works!

Damien was not a dog prone to powerful emotions. Even more volatile emotions such as rage and pride were fleeting, brief flashes of fancy that soon mellowed back into his typically composed mien. However, this did not make him emotionless, and even he was occasionally at the mercy of softer things like sentiment.
He had not, over the last few months, changed his stance on fatherhood. He had no intention of treating his offspring any differently than he would any other member of his gang. However, the Ah’mir had a tradition that had not yet made a reappearance in this strange new world, and it was one that he was… amenable to bringing back. After all, it was important to stoke feelings of belonging within his own pack.
Flowers were, unsurprisingly, important to the gang. Even outside of the shilah’mira, the vibrant petals of everyday flora were used in all the colorful powders that decorated the dog’s fur on special occasions. Whenever a dog of the clan earned a new name— whether at birth or due to their rama’jai– their foreheads were marked with color to signify the importance of the moment, a mark that they would wear for days to come. So, when one of the healers came to tell him that Akoda had begun her contractions, Damien turned to the large leaf that he had prepared days prior, ground petals forming a fine blue powder upon its surface. Wrapping the bundle with an ease that spoke of familiarity, he grabbed it within his maw and followed the healer.
There was already quite a crowd forming. On top of Akoda and the three healers, Castor and Hassi’onakah hovered nearby as well. Blessedly, they weren’t in the way; though he had no doubt the healers would make it known if they were. Approaching the laboring she-dog, he set his wrapping down and examined the scene with a detached air.
And then, almost imperceptibly, he softened.
Nodding to Castor and Hassi, he lowered his cranium to nose briefly at the top of Akoda’s head. She scented heavily of milk with an undertone that gave away her nerves, and he sighed, allowing his cheek to brush faintly against hers as he pulled back. It could almost be described as affectionate, if one tilted their head and squinted. After all, emotion aside, every canna in the Ah’mir were Damien’s to protect. Young or old, large or small, by pledging themselves to him they had in turn ensured that he was pledged to them as well. And the little lives that Akoda was preparing to introduce would be no different.
”Once they are born,” He declared, voice a low thrum amidst the controlled chaos, ”And they are named, they will be marked with Ah’mir colors so that the world may know they are accepted as clan. It will not be long now.” He straightened, gaze steady as he looked down at the great dane. ”You are doing well, Akoda.” And then he stepped back to allow the healers to do their job.

Akoda felt much more comfortable now that the healers were with her making sure that the birth was as comfortable as possible. A healer gave her some Pata'mira flowers and she quickly ate them as the contractions began to get stronger. The great dane did her best to keep herself calm and continued to push. The first clanmate to appear on the scene was Castor who offered her a thudu and comforting words. Akoda was too caught up in pushing that she couldn't say thank you. But she did appreciate it. Next, Hassi'onakah arrived with another thudu and offered her services. Now Akoda had two thudi to eat when she had delivered her puppies. That made her feel a bit better.
One of the healers spoke to Castor and Hassi'onakah. "Thank you both. Please give us three healers room to work. We've got this." Akoda felt grateful she had a support system during this time. Finally, her chief Damien appeared. When he brushed his cheek against hers faintly, Akoda calmed down significantly. She had not recalled Damien ever being affectionate like this towards her before. He made an announcement that once the litter was born, they would be marked with Ah'mir colors. Akoda continued to push and keep herself as calm as possible.
Fade in/ Fade out
Akoda had finally done it. She gave birth to seven healthy puppies who were now nursing. She licked each one of them, a proud mother. She was very hungry after all the hard work she had done. She began to eat the two thudi that was given to her. One of the healers spoke to the group surrounding Akoda. "Akoda has given birth to seven puppies. If you would like to get a closer look, feel free to do so. Just be careful." Having done their job the healers stepped back giving Akoda some room. Akoda was going to keep her promise to Damien, to make sure the pups became strong members of the clan. For now, she just wanted to enjoy her bundles of joy.
