PARIS
PERSONALITY ⚘
♔ It takes an hour to appreciate someone ♔
But he finds himself feeling liberated in ways, too. No longer must he live a life of relative solitude, populated only by a handful of people and animals. This newfound freedom has gone a long way to 'awaken' a wildness in his being, a fascination with the very concept of free will. As time goes on, he finds himself more and more self-sufficient, more silver-tongued and articulate, and more thoughtful. But most of all, more lonely. He's almost become jaded by his experience, and bitter about having finally found a home only to have it ripped away again. This has left him with a fresh fear of connection, constantly battling his need for community and companionship. These two desires (connection versus protection) clash viciously inside of him, waiting only for circumstance to decide a winner.
HISTORY ⌛
≡ A day to love them ≡
"Hershey" spent some eight months to a year in that place. He was lucky it wasn't a shelter. But eventually he was placed in a foster home and, not long later, he did find what was intended to be his forever home.
Mama was a college student, on her own for the first time. She adopted this imposing looking mutt to make her feel safe - and that was exactly what he did. Paris would quietly woof at the slightest noise, the smallest potential danger. And he was never too far from her as long as she was home. In her absence, he was a bored and destructive young dog with oodles of young dog energy. Many a shoe was destroyed, as well as a $300 pair of sunglasses and an entire couch. Still, Mama loved Paris, and she never once raised a hand to him. He loved her, as almost every dog does its master, and she loved him in the best way a broke and confused college student could. Time passed, and Mama saved up enough to move in with Dad. They had a yard then, and Dad brought his dog with him. Her name was Sadie, and the two of them became friends as easily as breathing. Things were getting better for this little family, a slice of earned happiness in a chaotic world. Dad took Paris and Sadie for a walk each morning, and Mama would let them all onto the bed to watch movies and eat popcorn. It was idyllic, until the earthquake came.
When Sadie and Paris came out from under the bed, Mama and Dad were gone. They waited in that house as long as they could, figuring out quickly how to open the fridge and pantry door. Funny, how hunger has a way of breeding determination. The two of them were sure their humans would return... But days turned to weeks, and the food ran out. Once that day finally came, they knew they could not stay. Had there not been a doggy door to the backyard, they might well have starved there together. Paris was the one to dig them out of the yard, and to lead them into the world. It was a world they didn't recognize, or even particularly want to be a part of. They had never once seen death before that time, but now it was everywhere.
There were other animals out there, which frightened Paris. One day, the two dogs encountered one such animal. It was perhaps the size of a medium dog and it sort of waddled along the ground with its head down. Although its face was dark brown, the rest of it was a lighter color and covered in what appeared to be very long bristles of hair. Sadie went to sniff the mysterious and seemingly unbothered creature. But just then-
THWACK
Sadie yelped and screamed and shot off like a bottle rocket. A dozen or so of those hair bristles had been embedded into her face, and no matter how hard either of them tried, they simply could not remove them. In fact, they only worked themselves deeper. She couldn't eat, and in her final days, she could no longer even drink. Paris reluctantly left her body under a sycamore tree and set out on his journey alone.
