"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"
|
| Navira might have been the chief of an entire clan, but there was something incredibly special about walking side by side with a Shadowspeaker. It made her feel small in comparison...literally and figuratively. Udu'e's gentle, majestic presence coupled with her enormous fluffy coat really made her stand out. As Navira strode along at the Rumlier'gru's side, she couldn't help but think that based on imposing presence alone, the collie probably didn't need an escort to the Yowie Yip patch today.
Still, collecting Cat Call could be a dangerous business and they needed to get to the new shoots before any other creature did. Thankfully, they were already pretty close to this patch - It grew up only a half a morning's walk away from Why'o base in a part of town that hadn't been completely taken over by forest yet. The sidewalks leading to the patch might look different now - Cracked and uprooted in places, but the walk was still familiar and fast. It wouldn't be long before they would reach their mission and Udu'e could pick as much Yowie Yip as she needed to care for the clan.
Except -
"Hold on." Navira said rather suddenly. She skidded to a stop, expecting Udu'e to do the same. Something wasn't right here. When the earthquake had hit four moons ago, the human's rubbish bins were shaken up where they had been parked along the streets. They'd been tossed out into the roads and never picked up. The sight was familiar now - Tipped green and black bins with bundles of plastic bags spilling out onto the crumbling roads.
What Navira was seeing right now was different. Most of the bags along this street had been torn wide open. Months old human trash now was spread through the streets and sidewalks so heavily that the pavement couldn't be seen in places. Thousands of tiny bits of plastic were torn apart even though the contents inside the bags had long ago become inedible. Whatever had done this though had tried again and again, clearly determined to find something. It made the hairs on the back of the chief's neck stand up.
"Aya! Looks like a whole clan's been here." She scoffed, utterly stunned by the audacity.

[googlefont=Righteous][googlefont=Vast Shadow] We never know what choices will lead to defining moments in our lives It felt like wasting the chief's time to have her accompany Udu'e on this small trek. The number of tasks at the feet of the clan's chief was as unending as her own. Surely another canna would suffice. Though she may be shadowspeaker, she strove never to let the title get to her head. Any other canna could serve just as well as her. Though their world was much changed, many things had remained familiar. It wouldn't be long now until they reached the patch in question. But Navira's words and a feeling of wrongness halted the two canna in their tracks. Upturned bins and shredded bags coated the streets. Something had torn through the area like the winds in a fierce storm. The question was what: canna or something else? Udu'e bent her head to sniff at a discharged bag. "Who could have done this?" she mused. This was Why'O territory. The other clans couldn't be brazen to commit such acts in another clan's land. The Rithr’Fliks' pullings came to mind, but she doubted this was their work. "A canna'thi?" But this seemed far too destructive to be the work of just one loner. notes

| "That's some canna'thi." Navira said, trotting up alongside Udu'e to sniff at the shredded bags. She found herself standing close enough to the Shadowspeaker that their dappled fur brushed slightly. The strangeness of it all made her feel as though she and her clanmate should be watching one another's backs in case the stranger - Whatever it was - Decided it wanted to take them apart instead. Navira almost scoffed when she realized that her thoughts sounded a little like young Lendri right now.
"But look." She said, pointing at one of the bins with her nose. "I don't think any canna could do that." The thick plastic around the lid was scored with deep clawmarks and cracks as if some very large creature had been made to pry it open with brute force. "I've never seen anything like it before. Udu'e?"
She inclined her head towards the shadowspeaker, hoping for a few words of wisdom from the collie.

[googlefont=Righteous][googlefont=Vast Shadow] We never know what choices will lead to defining moments in our lives Gingerly, Udu'e stepped around the scattered mess. Whoever, or perhaps whatever may apply better, had done this hadn't been concerned with cleanliness. With how haphazard it all was, the source seemed desperate. The more she looked the less she thought canna was the cause. Udu'e followed Navira's line of sight. The claw marks and cracks filled the shadowspeaker with apprehension. "Indeed," she agreed with a nod. Walking a bit closer, she carefully inspected the damage. From the size of the marks, the creature had been big. "I'm afraid not," the shadowspeaker answered with a frown. In her brief life, she had never encountered such a bizarre phenomenon. Her thoughts turned to her memories. Perhaps a story she'd been told held some clue to this mystery. The possibility that came to mind wasn't something she wanted to consider. "Haru?" she breathed. Notes and things can go here

| Navira's expression fell. If it were possible, she might have even paled a bit. She turned to the Shadowspeaker, her eyes alight with concern for the possibility being laid at their feet. She too had heard stories of the great haru, an aggressive, territorial and hungry creature that made even the biggest of canna look like Rith'r Flik in comparison. They were hungry animals that had been known in the past to barge right into a clan's homes...or even their pups...by brute force. Navira had never seen one herself, but the stories were still terrifying.
"The grimm drove all the haru away." She said, glancing suspiciously at the deep claw-marks again. "They wouldn't come back this quickly...would they?"
But even as the chief tried to talk herself out of it, she couldn't see any way around Udu'e's guess. There wasn't another animal that they knew of that would match this kind of damage. Not canna, not felin'how...no, this was most definitely the work of an an aggressive animal with enormous strength and size.
"We'll have to watch the cadets and pata more carefully." She said tersely. "Until we can figure this out. Rith'r Flik will need to know about it too. Udu'e...I don't know if I really want an answer...but...tonight, could you take a look at the emlier? Just cause...well, you know."
The chief didn't want to say it outright that she was afraid that shadows were stalking their clan now. Perhaps it was an overreaction, but she wasn't about to let any more of her clanmates go back to the Pelt without putting up a fight. If the wise Shadowspeaker would give any insight into what was to come, Navira would welcome it with ears up.

[googlefont=Righteous][googlefont=Vast Shadow] We never know what choices will lead to defining moments in our lives As much as she wished to believe their new world would be void of such dangers, she knew it unlikely. Their world may be much changed, but its rules were the same. "Desperation and hunger may have drawn them out." Territories had changed and hunting grounds upheaved with the advent of the Rozo'ama Akoda. Since what they were familiar with was now gone, it had likely sent them to places they wouldn't normally go. If it was truly a haru, it spelled danger. The great beasts were dangerous, and no small number of canna would be needed to drive them out. Even then, they wouldn't make it out without injuries. They'd be lucky not to lose a single canna. Udu'e nodded in sound agreement. They couldn't be certain, but it was better to take precautions. The shadowspeaker didn't want to lose a single canna to the beast. "We should tighten the watch and be extra careful. No one should go out alone." She didn't want to scare the clan before anything was confirmed, but their safety was her first priority. The collie smiled gently, "Of course." The stars may be able to provide them the confirmation that they needed. If not, they may provide some other guidance for what was to come and some peace of mind for her brethren. Notes and things can go here

| Navira shook her head in dismay. The pieces were all falling together now.
"You're right." She sighed. "I guess if it were sleeping Rahani'hu Lendri off somewhere, it would be waking up now looking for food. And...the whole world is different now, so where does it go? Straight into town to pull together scraps from the grimm. We can discuss it with the others tonight, talk about tightening watch on food and home...but right now, I think we need to start looking for more signs. This could just be our heads gettin' away from us, ya know?"
Somehow though, Li'Navira couldn't bring herself to believe her own words. What else would their minds wander to if not a giant haru when the deep claw marks were right in front of them? She bent to sniff at the marks again and wrinkled her nose. The scent on them was unpleasant, but not one that she had ever encountered before. How could she know if it was haru or not if she'd never smelled one?
"C'mon." She said, tossing her head to signal for Udu'e to follow as she trotted off down one side of the trash-littered street, inspecting desecrated bins as she walked."I think your yowie'yip's gonna have to wait a bit. We'll be looking for fur, tracks, and ran." And then she added as an afterthought, "And praying to the Gods that's all we find til we get word to reinforcements. How does a clan even tackle a problem like this?"
It wasn't a rhetorical question. The young chief was once again asking humbly for Udu'e's guidance...if not as a Shadowspeaker, then as a dog older and more experienced than she was.

[googlefont=Righteous][googlefont=Vast Shadow] We never know what choices will lead to defining moments in our lives Udu'e hoped Navira spoke true despite how much the evidence spoke against it. How comforted she would be if their search turned up nothing but spirits. If the culprit was something far more benign, they would all be better off for it. "I should hope so."The shadowspeaker didn't mind the loss of the yowie yip. It could always been found later. Given the discovery, the thought had flown her mind. She had nearly forgotten that that had been their original goal with this outing. No, they had far more important matters now. Trotting after Li'Navira, she turned her attention to their surroundings. Her mind wandered to the past. What had been done to drive away such a beast before? The task was herculean simply thinking about it. "This is not something one clan can take on alone." Surely fighting the hali wasn't their only option. "A confrontation may not be our option." The hali had come seeking food. If it didn't find any, it may leave on its own. Notes and things can go here
