"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"
|
| The stars were out tonight. Kind of. Navira lay sprawled on her back on the flat roof of the Why'o prison. She was watching dark clouds drift over a pelt full of bright stars. Sometimes she couldn't see them at all. Other times the wind would blow just right and the clouds would part like curtains to reveal a brilliant display. With all of the storms they'd been experiencing lately, even half-concealed stars were a rare sight.
Navira was a dog who loved her clan. She loved the noise and activity and sleeping in a great pile with the lot of them. But ever since the humans had disappeared, she'd also found that she really enjoyed spending time out on the rooftop watching the sky.
There were no human lights or sounds to dampen the display anymore. Despite the story that she had spun for the clan's youngsters a few days before, she felt like this was a brand new sky. It couldn't be - She knew that. There was only one Ridna. But maybe Ridna had turned over? Perhaps she was showing that she had spots on both of her sides.

Darkness. The husky was not a fan of the night time. He had always been a more visual-focused canna than most. Well, maybe less than Tavi or her pups, but he'd never really bothered to ask if they preferred their sight to their sense of smell or hearing. However, the sky lights during the darkest time of the day had always enthralled him. They acted much like clouds during the day, only taking place during the night time. Of course, there were clouds at night but their shapes were hard to discern.
Padding through the prison halls, Kukuk made his way up the stairs and through a small hatch that separated the building's ceiling from the sky. The roof truly was one of his favorite places.
Stepping out under the night sky, the husky took in a deep breath of the fresh air. After the storms of the past month the air was feeling a little heavy, but it was still enjoyable and carried many interesting scents on its winds. Suddenly, the male noticed something out of the corner of his eye. The shadowed shape of another canna nearly made him jump out of his skin. Stepping forward to investigate, he noted the familiar clan member.
"Li'Navira," he stated formally - probably the only formal thing he had ever consistently done in his life. "I didn't expect to find you up here."
His words were blatant but filled with a good-natured innocence. His tail wagged in a greeting and his muscles visibly relaxed. "Sorry if I am bothering you," he said as he immediately sat down directly next to her. His side leaned into his companion as he laid down on his belly. Sometimes the canine had a habit of being too friendly. He could also be bad at reading others and whether or not he was unwanted. His greatest flaw that he displayed currently, however, was his lack of personal space as he laid next to his chief, turning his head nearly upside down to look at her face from his current angle. His tongue hanging lazily from his upside down muzzle in a carefree smile.

| The sound of another dog creeping quietly onto the rooftop made Navira's ears perk. She wasn't concerned though - It had to be one of her clanmates. There was no way a stranger would make it into the building, past the clan, through the maze of hallways, and then casually find their way onto the roof. She was, however, curious about who else might be interested in stargazing tonight. It wasn't long before she got her answer.
"Hi, Kukuk!" She answered the shadowed shape of a husky before it plopped down at her side. "Nah, I'm not bothered. I just like to come up here sometimes to look at Ridna's Pelt." The grey collie grinned back at the goofy, smiling face that was now so close to her own. Her tail swished pleasantly against the roof at her rear. It was true. She was happy to have the company...even if it was "KooKoo" as she liked to secretly call him in her head. He was a fun guy. A little weird...but really fun. His demeanor was Why'o through and through and it made her feel comfortable in his presence.
"Did you come to see the emlier too?" She asked. "You can come and watch with me, but the clouds make it kinda hard!"

Kukuk's insincere apology, it turned out, was unnecessary. It wasn't insincere in the idea that he had wanted to bother her, more so that if he had and she had stated outright he would have left, but he would not have genuinely felt sorry for acting within his nature. It just wasn't who he was.
The husky's tongue snaked back into his mouth as he nodded at his chief's inquiry. "I did," he stated plainly, turning his head up towards the darkened sky above them. His thick tail swished upon the ground, sending up settled dirt and some small leaves that had been carried up by the wind days prior. "Have you noticed the spots on Ridna'kah move? I think it's most noticeable when she blinks," he added to the inquiry. Lowering his gaze to meet that of Navira he opted to drop the subject. Knowing that most of the other Why'o canna seemed to think he spoke nonsense, he turned his mind instead to the topic of clouds.
"I like the clouds. They have no shape in the dark but it makes it more like a forest. It helps Ridna to hide." He paused, considering his next words carefully. "Do you suppose she hides from something, or is instead stalking?"
The darkened muzzle of the husky turned back towards the sky, his face turning this way and that trying to follow the clouds. Or perhaps he was trying to see through them. Ridna'kah was so expansive up there, it was hard to fathom a canna of that size. But he knew she was there. The movement of his tail slowed as he concentrated on the detailed scene up above.

| At Kukuk's observaion, Navira turned her gaze back to the sky to squint at the spots. She was surprised into speechlessness at the husky mix's awareness of the changes made to the Pelt. He was right - She just wasn't expecting something like that to come out of this particular dog's mouth.
Perhaps it was unkind that she mentally chalked it up to, "Well. His head's always in the clouds anyway...maybe he brought some sky stuff back down with him." Even so, she couldn't shake the thought and it made her smile at her own joke. She would never say it out loud though.
"I did notice." She responded instead. "I thought...maybe it was her fur moving as she breathes." Her mind began to wander, imagining the great Goddess of the night taking such great breaths that it took all night for her sides to rise and fall again. She imagined the stars slowly moving with each giant breath. Imagining Ridna sleeping so peacefully was a comforting thought.
And then again he said something that left the chief tongue-tied, unsure of what to say next. This one was a little more abstract though. She pursed her lips and frowned, squinting up at the dark clouds now drifting over the stars.
"I'd be scared to find out what the Gods needed to hide from." She said finally. "Maybe Restephus? But he's all locked up in the Earth. Maybe she hides from U'less so that he doesn't try to wake her up too early."

Restephus? The name alone sent a shiver down the agouti mutt's spine. He nodded his head as his chief spoke, eyeing her slightly from his singular mud colored eye. A thought tickled at the back of the husky's mind at the name. Just the smallest glimmer of an inquiry. His bi-colored gaze lowered as he stared down at his paws, his lips pursed, deep in thought.
Folding his ears flat upon his head he addressed the chief. "Li'Navira?" he said, the name escaping from his muzzle in the form of a question. "I listened in to the story you shared the other night, with the cadets." The admission was not one of guilt or anything that should have been surprising. Many of the ele'canna and owi alike had listened in along with the ele'cannara. A dark ear flicked atop his pointed head as he continued, his gaze still settled upon his paws. "What if the Rozo'ama akoda was not caused by Rot'zo?"
He lifted his gaze and took a breath before turning to face her. "The world has changed again, like it had before. Even Ridna'kah seems to have been affected by shifting in her slumber. What if, instead of Rot'zo's garuru that shook the world it was Restephus getting loose?" His own words caused him to sniff curiously at the wind, as if he might get a hint of an answer from the heavens upon the breeze. It was an unsettling thought, but the pieces were starting to fit together. Shaking his head as if someone had just blown into his ear, the darker thoughts were pushed from his mind.
With a wide grin that caused his eyes to squint his tail began to wag across the ground - thumping with the typical dita'du beat. "Nevermind." His voice was back to his standard, cheery tone. It was a silly thought anyways.

| Navira didn't immediately respond to Kukuk's musing, save for a flick of one ear in his direction to show that she was indeed listening. Maybe he was right. The earth splitting apart because of Restephus's anger was a part of the old stories.
"I don't think so." She said finally, ignoring the other canna's dismissal of his own idea. It was too good a discussion to pass up. "When Restephus escaped before, he tried to destroy the whole world and made everyone feel so angry...and that's not what I seen here. We're in a really good partnership with Rith'r Flik Clan and there's so many new things in this world that just have to be from Rahani'hu and Ridna'kah. Like the meadow I found a few days ago! There's no way Restephus could have caused something beautiful like that." If Kukuk had only seen how peaceful even Rah'ki had been racing around the meadow like a pup, happy for once even in his grief for the friends he had lost, he would have understood. The new world had to have been created with good things in mind.
And then there was another deep pause as she considered her own words, wondering if she was being too faithful to a romantic idea. In the end she shook her head and spoke again, waving her own paw dismissively at the stars overhead.
"I dunno. Maybe at least...hm. Maybe Restephus got out and the Gods had to put the whole world back together again. I think they did a great job though. I really like this place!
We can walk around in the streets now without getting flattened. There's nobody chasing us off when we find something good to eat. The forest is really pretty. And...can you think of anything else? What do you like about the new place?"
The chief turned her head to look at Kukuk, brows raised, eyes sparkling with curiosity. He was a good dog. She knew that he'd have something nice to add.

I know every rock and tree and creature Has a life, has a spirit, has a name Pointed ears flopped atop the husky's head as he nodded in agreement with his chief's words. At first his heart leapt in his throat as she brought his musing back to the forefront of the conversation, yet her reassurance was alleviating towards any of the stress he held on the matter. His tail wagged in appreciation for her words.
She was right. The world was put back together fantastically. Prior to the earth splitting apart and coming back together he had never seen such life before. Sure, there were the grimm - and many of them, perhaps too many - and there were their metal beasts that had no qualms striking down his fellow canna. Kukuk had never understood those monsters. The humans hid inside of their bodies and would exit just as easily, typically unscathed. Yet, when his fellow canna would step into their path they would be hunted down like lout. But when the canna mufar lout they would also eat it. When the metal structures mufar canna - or any other animal - they would leave the bodies to rot. Such a waste of life made Kukuk's head spin trying to make sense of it all.
It was better to leave the thoughts at bay. The grimm were gone and their metal beasts now lay dead in the streets. Without the humans they no longer posed a threat to him and his kind.
Then, a question. An inquiry was directed at him from the li'canna, herself. What did he like about this new place?
The husky paused. His lips pursed as he appeared deep in thought. His eyes dropped to his paws for a moment as he considered before raising his nose back up to the sky.
"Emlier."
His answer was short and any dog who may not have known him may have believed his train of thought had fallen off track. The answer appeared nearly at random. Laying next to Navira, he stared up into the stars. His face was full of pure focus as he watched them in silence for a short while before adding on to his answer.
"Ridna'kah's spots are clearer now that the grimm are ayou." He contemplated his own words before continuing, dropping his gaze to meet that of Li'Navira. "The air also smells cleaner. And the far of non-grimm creatures can be heard more clearly now, if one listens."
The husky silenced his own voice for a moment, taking in the screeching calls of a camp of nearby bats and the chirps of the nightly insect orchestra. Listening to the songs of nature surrounding them caused his heart to beat wildly, sending adrenaline through his veins. Unable to contain himself, he lifted his head upwards and let out a soft howl into the night - adding his own voice to the symphony of the night.
