While he is not keen on using brute strength to overcome obstacles, Gru is not without physical strength. However, underneath his facades he does harbor a fair amount of cowardice. Opting instead to use his words instead of creating a more physical conflict. His strengths lie in his manipulation of others to do the "heavy lifting" for him and, subsequently, take the fall should his plots go south.

As a still young puppy, dazed and confused by the medications and delirious with the throbbing pain atop his head, he had made his way out of an unlatched gate. Over the next few months he wandered and found himself to be entirely skittish towards those humans who would approach him. He had no interest in their supposed compassion. All they had done was cause him pain and confusion. It was during this time that he discovered his affinity towards the plant life around him. Certain plants would do certain things to his body, all of them yielding different results - some made him tired, some dulled his pain, some gave him energy, and some made him vomit. He was unafraid to experiment using his own body as a test subject. Through ingesting small portions of things he could determine their toxicity. And from there he could increase the dosage to learn their effects. Eventually he began to mix different herbs together to experience entirely new results.
Nearly one year old, Gru had stumbled into the territory of another dog. A whole gang of dogs, to be precise. Feeling threatened and as though his life was on the line, he offered knowledge on some of the local flora, only one or two things the others had not heard of before. With this and his large stature, he was granted access to take a place within their gang. It was a disorderly cacophony of mutts, but they made it work. The leader, Orion, was a canna to behold. It seemed only a blink of the eye had passed before the landseer, Damien, had joined the ranks with his shilah'mira - a coveted plant amongst all canna. And even less time seemed to pass before the death of their mighty leader. At that, the dark brute Damien stepped up to take his place.
Gru'e Canna'a had been one to stay out of Damien's way. Especially after the incident with the now-marked askabi, he had no wish to quarrel with the larger canine. Instead, he stuck closely to the shadowspeaker, keeping his grip on the canna through subtle manipulation. It was not until the Rozo'ama akoda, when Gru was granted the rank of shadowspeaker, himself, that he approach Li'Greyo with such confidence. He had always been confident in his skills, but with his newfound rank he has gained confidence in his own right. Though he still has no wish for a battle of strength between the two, he has moved to making suggestions towards the clan's chief in an effort to persuade him into having things go the way that the shepherd wants.
