In your eyes I see the eyes of somebody I knew before, long, long, long ago...
|
| "Soo...I guess you're my sister." Kanya was rambling on at the bedraggled form of a dog that lay nestled among rags in the healer's den. The strange little pup hadn't yet woken - Only a stir here and there, but the healers said that she would probably come out of it soon. Kanya had taken to hovering around the "body" in nervous anticipation of that moment.
As the hours passed, and passed...and passed some more, she'd grown bored of waiting. (And the healers had told her in no uncertain terms not to touch anything) So she'd started to talk. The stranger couldn't hear her anyway.
"Li'aba says so anyway. And Huli. Nobody knows who you are and you won't wake up, so I'm going to give you a name. You'll be...Shaska'chek, because you look like a half-drowned lout. They said you swallowed a whole lot of water, so I guess you did almost drown. Good thing I was there to save you! Yep, that was all me. You're really heavy, by the way.
Maybe it was all the water in your belly that made you feel like a big rock. Gosh, I bet you're gonna be really hungry when you wake up. But don't worry, I'll share my renna'fli with you."
And then she leaned in close to the unconscious pile of fur and whispered as if she were keeping a secret, "I stole it from the lout pile this morning."
What a generous offer! In her own mind though, it made sense. Kanya was still learning this whole "sharing" thing, but hey, it sounded right to share her very favorite snack with a long-lost sister!
| But I'm still trying to make my mind up. Am I free or am I tied up?

Sleeping or dead? Rayli was unsure of which. Probably somewhere in the middle, or a little bit of both. Though she harbored no real concept of death. Everything just seemed strange and wrong. Every now and then she'd peer through squinted eyes, only half awake - or was she half asleep? - and throw up before dropping back into a lack of consciousness. Her lungs and belly felt heavy and each heaving cough that erupted in an expulsion of water left her throat and nose burning, but she was unable to convey her feelings to anyone.
She could hear voices, but they were all so unfamiliar. However, in her mind's eye she could see her family. Castor, Kahru, and some of the other Ah'mir faces she had been less acquainted with. They were going to help her be normal. The thought of the others around her made her want to sing and dance, but she was unable to find the strength to do so. She was just so very tired.
Someone was talking to her, whispering secrets into her ears. The force of the air caused one ear to twitch. The muscle spasm flooded down to her paws which flexed in response. Her eye lids felt so heavy still, she was only able to peek through them at a squint. Even that brought in too much light, she felt as if she would be blinded. Her nose wiggled slightly, picking up the unfamiliar - yet somehow strangely familiar - scents of her surroundings. Another small fit of coughing escaped her muzzle, though nothing but air retreated from her throat. She let out a soft whine as reality began to creep back up on her. The entirety of her form was wracked with pain. It hurt to move, it hurt to see, it even hurt to breathe.
With a small whine she forced herself to crane her head towards her companion. The strain on her muscles caused a sharp pain to form at the base of her neck. "Kahru..?" she questioned, her voice soft in almost a whisper. It hurt to speak. Through bleary eyes she saw the familiar outline of a mutt. The pointed ears, the dark markings. But this was not Kahru. No. She was once again staring at her reflection. The strange reflection from across the river.

Could this Kanya not get any more of a pawful? Not only had she stolen the first day she met her, but then she had gotten into Mira's supplies and managed to hoard poor Randan's hidden treasures. This was the cherry on top however, dragging an unconscious, soaking-wet pup into the rail yard. Somehow the cherry on top of the cherry was that this pup was clearly one of Kanya's siblings, something that didn't seem to bring a huge amount of joy to the young rebel. Mouse, on the other hand, was relieved that this new little Ant was still breathing, and had been returned home, almost as if by the gods' own wills, so soon after Kanya.
The Chief entered Mira's space, joining the two pups and Kanya rattled on to the barely conscious little ren. Her lips pursed as she heard Kanya's whispers about stealing the fli at her paws from the stash. That was something they would have to go over again later, but now was not the time. Her priority was this new face and making sure she was alright. She caught the raspy whisper of 'Kahru?' and shook her head gently to the pup. "You're in Rith'r Flik territory, aba'ren. Your sister Kanya'grair Shempsar managed to drag you all the way home after you nearly drowned in the river. Do you have a name?" The usually prickly chief softened herself for this sickly pup. Kanya hadn't gotten the same courtesy because of her brashness when they met, but this little one seemed to be much sweeter. At the very least, she was too tired to be as fiery as her sister. If she turned out to be, then Mouse would harden up to deal with her. For now, she was a confused, scared pup that had just nearly died, and that deserved a delicate paw.

| Kanya startled ever so slightly when Li'aba announced her presence. The little jolt was so subtle that it might not have been noticed, or perhaps mistaken for the flinch of a kitch bite. The cadet had been so wrapped up in talking to the unconscious scrap that she simply hadn't heard her chief approaching.
She turned to watch the older dog as she spoke, ears perked forward to hear what Mouse had to say. Yeah, she and the Rith'r Flik leader had gotten off to a pretty rotten start. In all honesty, Kanya was still kind of nervous around this canna. But she couldn't wiggle away from that weird feeling of admiration for the chief. She'd let Kanya stay with the clan and hadn't been too mad at her for dragging this half-dead stranger in too.
But still...Kanya had to pop out sometime.
"How come you're talkin' sweet with her but you shouted like a haru with a hernia when you found me?" She grumbled halfheartedly, not really expecting an answer. Instead, she turned her attention to the "sister" that was starting to wake up now.
"Is Kahru your name?" She blurted, stumpy tail wagging at her rear, and then to Mouse in a very matter-of-fact way, "That's the only word I've heard her say, ever. That's gotta be her name. I kind of wanted to call her Shaska'chek, but Kahru is okay too."

Kahru? Her name? No. She was Rayli. With a weak shake of her head she announced it, unable to form the happy words she would have liked to use to introduce herself. She blinked as she attempted to pull herself up to get a better glance at her two companions - for there were two of them now. One was the rambunctious yapping of her reflection and the other had been soft spoken, almost as if afraid the pup would break if she spoke too harshly.
Lifting herself with her front paws she found it impossible to move her back legs. Why wouldn't they move? Panic began to beset her once again as she began dry heaving in a threat to begin bawling and crying from the overwhelming sensations of her current predicament. Fear was very prominent within her, but not for the simple reason of these strangers and this place being unknown to her. No, it was quite the opposite. Something about this place was familiar and it struck her as uncanny and terror-inducing. Had she been here before? There was no way. As far as she was concerned she had always been with Castor and Kahru, the times before that didn't count. They were too scary.
Her brown eyes widened as they darted about the room, taking in every sight of her surroundings including but not limited to the two small canna in front of her. Her back and chest heaved in the onset panic attack. Her front legs wobbled briefly before giving way under the weight of her body, dropping her back fully to the floor. Squeezing her eyes shut she lay splayed flatly in front of the others, still struggling to catch her breath.
"Where Kahru??" she said in an implied demand but escaped as a soft whimper. "Kahru help!" she whisper-called to seemingly no one, though her heart pleaded for her adopted brother. With a deep breath she pointed her nose upwards towards the ceiling above, her body still remaining flat on the ground, as she called out in a desperate, hoarse wail.
"Kahruuuuuu..."
The howl was cut short as she dropped her head back down on the floor, exhaustion beginning to once again overtake her. However, she remained conscious. Big brown eyes glittered with tears that stained her cheeks as they drifted between the small li'canna and the other pup.
