"Somebody, help!" Kahru shouted at the top of his cracking voice as he burst into his clan's greenhouse, chest heaving. His eyes darted around the glass shelter wildly, tears streaming down his already soaked cheeks, searching for literally any canna that might help him. He was in a state of sheer panic...and he needed someone bigger and stronger than himself to take charge now. He could hardly speak - The events of the day kept replaying over and over in his mind, causing him to blubber all over again like a tiny pup. The river rising. Rayli being swept away. Finding her on the other side of the river, only for strangers to drag her limp body away, oblivious to his pleas for them to stop and bring his friend back.
"The forest has flooded!" He barked senselessly, racing through the greenhouse, searching every nook and cranny for a grown-up. Where was everyone?! "The river - Rayli, I lost Rayli in the flood! She's been kidnapped, I need somebody to help me, please!"
Lost in the middle of a nightmare, Kahru's mind was being carried away to dark places. What if the hungry river had taken the rest of his clan as well? Was he the only one left? Had he lost Castor too? He'd have to go and hunt Rayli's kidnappers down himself! The rain was still beating relentlessly against the roof of the greenhouse, peppered here and there by lightning and thunder cracks...and the sound of a half-grown pup howling desperately for someone to come and help him rescue him from this horrible dream.

Castor found himself enjoying one afternoon out of the torrential rain resting in the greenhouse. Long legs pressed against the cool concrete, his eagerness to do anything sapped away with each fat drop of rain hitting the rooftop. That was, until, the shrill voice of his apprentice broke through the rain in time with the grey clod of soaked fur, "Somebody, help!" In an instant, the hound was on his paws, ears pushed forward as he moved towards the panicking ele'cannara.
"The forest has flooded! The river - Rayli, I lost Rayli in the flood! She's been kidnapped, I need somebody to help me please!" Kahru cried out as Castor rounded the corner to find him. "Breathe Kahru'hu," he barked out, lowering his head to meet the eye level of the growing pup, "What part of the river? Did you see who took her? We'll find her, don't worry." Castor's head returned to its naturally high position as he scanned the rest of the greenhouse. Surely others would soon be there so they could start making a plan to get Rayli back.

Relief washed over the bawling pup when he saw his mentor rounding the corner. Castor would know exactly what to do. Kahru immediately bounded over to the Ibizan, meeting his elder halfway before beginning all over again, still hiccuping like a tiny ren. It was evident that was on the verge of a full blown panic attack. There was just too much going on. Too much being laid at his paws.
"I don't know what part of the river. It's all in the wrong place. The river grew up into the forest where it's never been before, and we tried to get out but the water caught us and...I don't know!" He blurted, shoving his forehead into the bigger dog's chest as a young child might do to their mother in an attempt to seek comfort. There was no mother here. Castor was the closest thing he had and he wasn't in a state of mind right now to pretend differently. "A grey canna took her. I lost her under the water and when I found her again she was on the wrong side of the river and she wasn't moving at all, and someone else got there before me, and they dragged her away and she didn't even try to fight them! She must have been hurt really bad." And then the big pup's voice caught again as he choked back another round of tears.

here i stand in the heart of beautiful debris White fur dripping with mud and drenched, tightly clung to its master. Gru'e strode swiftly into the greenhouse, his large paws moving with a purpose. In his mouth he carried a sopping bundle of fur and limbs, its body hanging limply from his maw - exhaustion had overtaken the comparatively small ren. As the brute entered the dry sanctuary he lowered his head and dropped the pathetic being to the floor, giving it a solid nudge to get it back onto its feet and scampering towards the nursery. Watching his chief's pup waddle off he stopped to shake himself, sending a flurry of mud and water about the greenhouse.
His ears perked up at the cries of the cadet, Kahru'hu. His head swiveled towards the sniveling canna. A sneer crossed his features at the blatant, ren-like actions of one who should be past the age of bawling and sobbing towards its caretaker. He had no time nor patience for the cadet. He was, after all, Castor's cadet and adopted son... maybe? Their relationship was strange to the shepherd mix but he had never bothered to inquire very far into it. The ibizan, it seemed, had a soft spot for pups as he had adopted two of them in his short time living amongst the Ah'mir.
Ignoring the agouti apprentice's tears and sad stature, Gru'e approached the corporal with a purpose. "Castor," he stated, the name rolling off his tongue in a disdain-filled manner. He had never cared much for non-canna naming conventions. Li'Greyo also seemed keen on his grimm name, Damien. Gru'e had never personally seen the appeal. "Your cadet is correct in the rising water levels. We need all available owi and ele'canna to either dig a barricade or move the cache of shilah'mira and our lout to safer ground." His head and tail were held high, an honor held by his rank and flaunted aggressively and openly. While not entirely towering above the ibizan, he did stand a good deal taller than him.
"Whatever it is that your cadet is worried about will have to wait. The shilah'mira needs to be our number one priority." i act | "i speak" | 'i think' |

Kah'ru's sobs only started up again as he met the pup halfway. He listened intently through the hiccups, absorbing what information he could. The river was flooding into the forest, Rayli had half-drowned (why did all of his adopted kids somehow end up half-drowned?), and then her unconscious body had been stolen by someone across the river. There wasn't much that anyone could do right now. Trying to get across the raging waters wouldn't be possible for even the most adept water dog. They would have to find her after the flood had subsided, but there was no telling how long that would be.
"Castor," his name barked with a sneer from the large shepherd, Gru'e, returned his regular half-annoyed frown to his face, "Your cadet is correct in the rising water levels. We need all available owi and ele'canna to either dig a barricade or move the cache of shilah'mira and our lout to safer ground. Whatever it is that your cadet is worried about will have to wait. The shilah'mira needs to be our number one priority." Hubris practically oozed from the shadowspeaker, and frankly, it was stinking up the whole greenhouse.
Castor still hadn't quite understood the connection that Gru'e supposedly shared with the gods. In fact, he was beginning to think that maybe he had made it up just to move up in rank. There was no doubt that the shepherd was good with herbs, but with the gods? He drew to his full height, leaving the side of his cadet to face the larger dog. He didn't have a rank to wag in others' faces to give him the permission to so flagrantly posture back to Gru'e, but that didn't stop him from stiffening his tail raised slightly, ears pushed forwards as he looked right at the shadowspeaker's eyes.
"A ren has been kidnapped, and your concern is flowers?! We need to move the pata, make sure everyone is accounted for! Flowers keep growing, canna don't come back. I'm not saying we don't move the shilah'mira, but have a little sympathy for the dogs you're barking orders to," Castor half growled, knowing that his actions weren't smart in the ranks of clan life. Behind his scowl, he bit his tongue. There was no need to become an askabi over this. "We can't find Rayli right now, Kah'ru. The best thing to do is to move the shilah'mira-" he paused shooting a glance with a lash of his tail to Gru'e, "and make sure all of the other ren are accounted for. We will find her." Fire coursed within his veins, aimed purely at the harsh commandments of the shadowspeaker. He disliked the way that Gru'e used his rank, and if this sudden emergency was anything to go by, his morals were not nearly in line with Castor's. There wasn't anything he could do though. Gru'e was the highest rank there, Li'Greyo nowhere to be found. He had to follow his rules. It was like being back with the grimm. Do this, go there, be our ornament and do what we say. Great. Just great.

It had been so soothing, just for a moment, to have Castor to vent all of his heartache to. Kahru might have been almost the size of a full-grown canna now. He might have been quickly hurtling towards losing the name of "cadet." But in this moment he was just a bewildered little puppy that needed a hug and word of comfort from someone bigger and stronger than himself.
...Until Gru'e barged into the scene. Kahru hadn't had much personal experience dealing with the grumpy old Shadowspeaker, but from the little interaction that he'd had, he knew that this dog was someone to avoid. That time he'd cut his paw and gone to the healer's rooms in search of soothing herbs only to be chased out and told in no uncertain terms to grow up still lived rent-free in his head.
The big pup was still in a state of shock, but as the adults bickered over his head he finally managed to swallow up the breathtaking hiccups that had been plaguing him earlier. His thoughts were still consumed with rescuing Rayli, but another something had managed to wiggle its way into his head now. Why was Gru'e giving orders? Had he had a vision about the flowers?
The last order given though made Kahru gasp with shock. He turned to face Gru'e, eyes wide, jaw dropped, unsure if he'd heard correctly. And then Castor, too! They'd lost their minds! Of course Rayli was more important than flowers. Who knew what those strangers were doing to her. She was going to be so scared!
"What?!" He barked out, though his voice was rough from his earlier cries. "We have to go after her right now! Castor, come on, she's going to be so scared. Gru'e? What if those guys hurt her? We can't just leave her like this!"

here i stand in the heart of beautiful debris A single white fang showed past the shadowspeaker's sneer at Castor's response and body language. The absolute audacity the corporal had to posture in front of him. The thought that it was meant to help put on a brave face in front of his cadet had crossed the shepherd's mind, but perhaps that made the gesture all the worse. Teaching the younger generation such blatant disrespect.
Gru'e's flaring anger was quelled by the ele'canna's finishing remark. Though the air of insubordination still hung thickly in the air the shadowspeaker found himself appeased enough as his commands would be followed. His gruff appearance and expression did not waver, however. His nod of acquiescence was cut short by Castor's added statement - or, more so, the tone at which he stated it. "Of course," he reassured through a snarl.
His eyes narrowed as the pup, Kahru, jumped back into the conversation. Much like his mentor, Kahru seemed in need of learning some manners and discipline in regards to the clan ranks. While his eyes fell upon the canna who - at the moment - appeared as nothing more than an overgrown puppy, his features and voice were directed solely towards the elder of the two. "Castor, perhaps it would be best you teach your ele'cannara some manners," he stated blatantly, his voice evoking no sense of feeling one way or the other. He began to turn towards the room where the cache of their most prized possession - the shilah'mira - was stored before adding, "The pata of Li'Greyo has all been accounted for. I just brought the last of them in. I'm sure Tatu has her tatu'ren nearby already." Brown eyes darted towards the nursery for a brief moment before he turned his head back to face the duo and speak to them both directly. His tail held high behind him as a stiff banner. He let out a huff, though if it was in sympathy or annoyance at the situation was left to interpretation. "Rayli was one of your pata, was she not?" The word "pata" was spoken with a hint of distaste for the word. To Gru'e, what Castor had done in adopting a few pups in his time with the clan was wholly unnatural in the shadowspeaker's eyes. Still, he continued, "I am sorry she has been lost. I will speak with Li'Greyo on this matter once the storm settles and be sure to arrange a search party."
Gru'e's gaze swayed between the two canna that stood in front of him. While his words were spoken with a false sense of sincerity, his mind was elsewhere. i act | "i speak" | 'i think' |

"What?! We have to go after her right now! Castor, come on, she's going to be so scared. Gru'e? What if those guys hurt her? We can't just leave her like this!" Kahru'hu rasped his youthful outcry mimicking Castor's internal turmoil. If not for the delicate politics of the situation, he would bite back in the face of the Shadowspeaker. The brute was rude, crass, and careless with life. "Castor, perhaps it would be best you teach your ele'cannara some manners. The pata of Li'Greyo has all been accounted for. I just brought the last of them in. I'm sure Tatu has her tatu'ren nearby already," the beast rumbled, the tension between the hound and the shepherd as fragile as a cobweb.
Castor's teeth made a brief appearance, a silent growl biting to be uncaged behind his jaws. A gale of vile, sarcastic words whipped around his head, but for the sake of his family he kept them inside. "Rayli was one of your pata, was she not?" The shepherd's attempt to overpower the situation with his squared stance was met with Castor's own as he ended up posturing against the barbarian again. It was one thing to leave his kids as a side thought in this disaster, but another to challenge directly the legitimacy of the little family he had amassed as if the clan had not come together with new faces after Rozo'ama Akoda. Orange eyes practically caught fire as he bit his tongue. "I am sorry she has been lost. I will speak with Li'Greyo on this matter once the storm settles and be sure to arrange a search party," the facade of care was threadbare at best. Gru'e just wanted this to end. Castor was sure that in all that vacuous space inside the large blocky head of the shadowspeaker there was only one thought, and that was to brush whatever comes up to the side to do his own thing.
"Good," Was the only word that spat from behind interlocked teeth as the hound turned to his clearly upset apprentice. Though rage was coursing through his veins to the point where he was practically irradiating it, he sat as gently as he could next to the overgrown puppy. Eyes still trained on Gru'e as he hopefully went about whatever business he thought he could accomplish in a flood, Castor tensely whispered to Kahru, "Do not talk to superiors the way I just did. Do not posture the way I did, even when your anger overcomes you. There are smarter ways to fight than head-to-head with superiors. We will talk to Li'Greyo as well, and make sure he knows that she was kidnapped and not just lost in the flood. He'll know what to do." There wasn't anything else he could do. The river was flooded and there was no getting across it. He had to go along with the rouf'uriketi and move the precious flowers before he could even start looking for Rayli. He was trapped here with Gru'e until the storm dissipated, which was punishment enough in itself for his outburst.
