Ira had to admit. Trotting alongside Nahara right now was...awkward. Really awkward. At least after the not-so-private heated exchange between the chief and her sister a few days ago in front of the entire clan. Ira wasn't sure how to behave around Nahara at the best of times.
They didn't really have a lot in common. There wasn't anything to chat about. She clearly didn't like pups, which were pretty much the subject of every other conversation piece that Ira might have at this point in her life. And now, this? Ah, well. They weren't on a bonding trip. They were looking for the missing cadets.
The two were walking beside the still too-high banks of the flooded river at the edge of Why'o territory. Ira had her nose to the ground, sniffing along the sodden earth for any sign that a pup might have fallen in or at least crossed this way. So far there she had found nothing. The golden mix gave a huff of annoyance. Where had those kids gone? Surely they hadn't vanished into thin air.
"I'm not picking anything up." She finally admitted to her companion, raising her head to peer out across the flowing river while she spoke. "So I'm guessing they didn't cross that."

You break me, then I break my rules It should be forbidden for Nahara to be forced to spend time with other dogs. After all, she was known for being rather cruel and most packmates would readily admit she was not their favorite canine. The shepherd-mix had her tail stiff in the air, whether out of instinct or confidence was yet to be seen. Her eyes were set ahead as the silence filled the air. She was not the type of gal to fill the quiet.
Surely this pretty retriever thought she was a freak. Ironically, Nahara didn't consider the other she-dog an oddity despite the dark patch on her face. When it came down to it, the leader's sister admired the mutation. It was the imperfection in an otherwise perfect female.
She picked up her speed, feet quiet against the earth as she tried to shake herself out of her mind. No point thinking of her, no point getting to know her. If Navira would stop trying to force Nahara to 'play nice' she would go back to being alone. She preferred that, right?
The brindle dog twitched when her companion suddenly broke the silence. The rushing river was a haunting sight as Nahara considered the possibility. Her tone came blunt, it was her default. "Cross it, unlikely. Get swept away by it? Likely." She looked to Ira, expression difficult to read.
"We have to decide if we want to attempt to cross. No offense, but your pelt looks heavy--not sure you'd make it across without some water in your lungs." |
