Navira stepped out into the prison's shaded courtyard with a deep sigh, breathing in lungfuls of fresh morning air. The day hadn't yet grown terribly warm, but that didn't seem to matter much to the roly poly bundles of excitable fur that she'd come to see today. The sight of Ira's pata tumbling happily around the courtyard this morning without a care in the world brought a small wag to the chief's tail. It was a blessed relief to be around the sound of laughter again.
Why'o Clan were known for their closeness, their ability to laugh and play with one another even through adulthood. Why'os were as close as siblings. And yet, lately the whole pack felt as though they were drifting apart in their grief, their accusatory stares, their under-the-breath bickerings about where they should look next for their still-missing cadets. And Navira was at the heart of it all. The reason why they had all run away, why they had escaped unseen in the first place, even. Guilt weighed heavily on the chief at all times and she couldn't help but feel as though everyone blamed her especially for it all.
Ira's pups were too young to know anything of politics or hurt feelings yet. They were happy just to clown around in the morning sunshine. It wouldn't be long before they were made into cadets that would grow to shape the future of Why'o Clan. Navira sat down against a red brick wall and sighed deeply, letting her thoughts drift to who might make a decent mentor for each of these pups in the coming blink.

Abaru had attempted to play with her siblings today. The atmosphere today made her feel a sense of peace and contenment; she wanted to be a puppy today. She sighed under one of her sibilings has she had lost the game, again. She tried to not let it get to her, she was smaller than the particular littermate she had just lost too. She stood up and shook of her loss and chose to watch a round. Maybe if she could watch, she could learn some tactics and maybe one day win! She yawned as she watched the tumbles and small yips that came with the bundles of chaos. Out of the corner of her eye she saw the clan leader. She could feel herself fix her posture, almost without thought, and her face moved from realxed to stern. She was ready and any point to correct the behavior of any of her sibilings. She wanted her clan leader to be proud of her. The idea of getting scolded by any adult gave her the chills, but for it to come from Navira, that would be a nightmare. She knew her siblings saw this particular character trait as a flaw, but she believed it was her strongest trait.
Abaru continues eyeing her litter mates, feeling more and more uneasy and their now seemingly growing rowdy behavior. " You guys,....you guys!" She hissed as she watched their clan leader watch them. She nervously shifted her front paws, especially the longer her sibilings ignored her. She began to feel a slight knot in her chest as she prepared for an excuse. Her ming moving a thousand miles an hour to try and figure out an honest answer that wouldnt make her seem just as silly as those of the other pups. She just hope that maybe the leader would simply continue walking past, or something would distract her from the immaturity of the pups playing next to her. All she could do was brace for what could happen.

Lendri's absence was a surprising gap in the collie's life. Not that he was looking forward to actually teaching the ren, but his herb stash was much fuller with a second mouth to bring them. The search for his missing helping paw hadn't gone well at all. Tensions were high, and attitudes around the base had echoed more his own crabby one than anything productive. He knew how to work through his grumpiness. Everyone else's ability to do the same was severely lacking.
This morning, Likal found himself wandering the courtyard amongst the sounds of the only young voices in the clan left. Maybe it was some subconscious need to feel like life wasn't so different now. Perhaps he wanted to keep them all safe, and he could only do that by being nearby. How would he know, he's an owi, not a psychologist. The pata's antics failed to bring more than the passing thought of a smile to his face, but that wasn't their fault. Li'Navira was a surprising sight to see. Placing grey fur against the same brick wall his Chief did, he remained silent for a moment. In truth, he was more the Nahara of his siblings. Jealous, grouchy, abrasive, not the favourite by anyone's means. Yet, it would seem that they were the unlikely pair to be in the courtyard this morning. Glancing away from the pata and Abaru's anxious antics, the owi flatly said, "Kailo for your thoughts?"

The arrival of the mottled healer, Likal'e, was unexpected but pleasant. Navira glanced at the collie and allowed her tail a small thump of greeting, though she continued to watch the pata romp. They were a feisty bunch. The chief found herself chuckling at little Abaru trying her very best to round up her brothers and sisters to make them behave. The bossy little pup reminded Navira, with a bittersweet pang, of her own missing cadet.
"Hey, pups!" She barked out to the gaggle of furry white bodies. "Let's see who can race from this wall to that one the fastest. Go on, hurry up! Remember, Why'os are fast!"
At that, she turned with a much quieter voice and spoke directly to Likal.
"Just thinking about who these pups might be paired with when Ridna blinks again. I've got a feeling that that one..." She said, pointing her muzzle at Abaru, "will need a gentle paw. I think she's pretty sensitive."
And then the chief shook her head. "But I'm not sure who I want for her. Or any of them, really. It's a big decision, you know. It was easy with Lendri. I don't think I could have pried him out of the owi'ayalu if I tried. He was made for the job."
But then the small smile on Navira's face began to fade just as quickly as it came, her reminiscing bringing only sadness once again.
"I'm sorry, Likal."

Abaru's ears pricked at the clan leader's challenge. Her mouth gaped slightly before she closed it again, not wanting to be rude. She did not expect to be expected to be a ren. Then there was the panic, of course, that now she needed to prove how fast she could be! She was determined to not be last! She lined up with her siblings against the wall and....woosh! Abaru felt one of the other pups leave the wall before the leader had called out go. She had the urge to correct her siblings fault, but chose instead to run after them. She could feel her paws hit the ground as fast as they would go, trying her best to analyze the way her body moved. She had studied the adults many a time while they ran, and she tried to burn into memory what it looked like so that she too could be as quick as they. The movements felt unfamiliar, as she was use to her more floppy bounds that indicated to her youth. She pushed on anyway and tried to keep pace with her siblings. 'This is very irresponsible of me,' she cursed to herself as she came close to the first wall. She found her self slowing as she got lost in her thoughts, which in turn, quickly snapped her back into the race. She brushed against the first wall and turn towards the next. She wasn't first, but she wasn't last. She took a sharp breath in and swiftly picked up her pace.
The second wall came faster than she had anticipated and before she got stop herself she slid right into it. With a loud thud, she smacked the wall then fell on the ground. The wind had quiet literally been knocked out of her. As she struggled to breathe she looked around herself and noticed that the owi was by Navira. She had never formally met Likal, but she felt a reverence towards him. She suddenly felt embarrassed about her behavior. Quickly, she stood up and shook herself lightly, then composing herself, she sat straight and proper, her paws placed neatly before her. She tried to pretend she hadn't just made a fool of herself and hoped that the older dogs did not notice her charade.

Li'Navira was much better with kids than Likal could ever be. He was content to let them just live their own little lives while the adults talked. The merle leader was always one to set a good example, the idea of a classic race against siblings easily masked the training of speed for the young retrievers. The pittering and pattering of little paws after Li'Navira started the race faded into the background as Likal turned his ears to the Chief. "Just thinking about who these pups might be paired with when Ridna blinks again. I've got a feeling that that one... will need a gentle paw. I think she's pretty sensitive. But I'm not sure who I want for her. Or any of them, really. It's a big decision, you know. It was easy with Lendri. I don't think I could have pried him out of the owi'ayalu if I tried. He was made for the job," she seemed to think out loud. Likal offered a hum or two as she talked, just to show that he was, in fact, listening despite his eyes watching the pups race. His gaze only broke when Li'Navira apologized.
"It's alright. He is," Likal refused to use the past tense to refer to his apprentice just yet. They had only been missing for a week, and the cadets were old enough to fend for themselves at least for a little while. "If any of them turn out to have the blessing I'm sure Udu'e would be happy to take another cadet. She dealt with Kitchi and Lendri in her den all the time, I'm sure she'll do fine. I can too if the gods have been generous with this litter," his teeth were gritted slightly, trying to pretend like his eyes were a blessing and not some curse that had controlled his entire life.
He was going to continue, maybe try to say something comforting emotionally more than practically but little Abaru's tumble caught his attention first. Giving the leader a small nod to announce he would be briefly departing from their conversation, the collie quickly trotted over. The little ren had already gotten back up on her paws, chest heaving from the impact as she sat. The owi wordlessly pressed his nose onto either side of her torso, nudging her slightly to feel for any bones that might be broken - though it was unlikely that the speed of a pup could do that alone, it didn't hurt to be careful. "Let me know if it hurts to breathe in an hour or so. You should be fine," he said succinctly, a blink the only thing offered beyond that to the ren before he sat back next to Navira. In a quieter tone, so the pata couldn't hear him, he murmured, "She's got strong bones at least. More than Lendri does."

"Oof!" The chief winced as she bore witness to the golden ren's headlong connection with the far wall of the courtyard. While she heard and flicked her ears in ready acknowledgement of Likal's willingness to take a pup, her eyes remained focused on Abaru. The little pup looked okay. But...well.
Likal was already on it. Navira couldn't help but feel a burst of pride at her clanmate's willingness to jump in to help the pup before she could even say a word about the situation. In her opinion, he was a born owi. The kind of dog the Why'os needed to see more of.
Yet she couldn't help but cast an amused glance at the healer as he returned to sit beside her once again with his matter-of-fact report. "Lendri threw himself down grair stairs." She said with a hint of a tease lacing her voice. "If we're comparing anything between those two, I think it would be their eyesight."

Abaru could feel her ears go back in embarrassment as the owi examined her. Though slightly sore she felt fine for the time being. That was not worth it, she thought to herself as she realized she hadn't won anyway. She watched as the adult walked away and decided she had had enough rambunctious time today. Besides, she didn't want to worry any other canna with her behavior. She knew their time was drawing short and they would soon be assigned their duties within the clan. With a short sigh she moved back towards the stairs where her clanmates came and went. She flopped down, legs laying to her side and her head resting against the cool ground. She couldn't seem to shake the shame she felt for acting out, but at least no one else seemed to notice her accident and took so comfort in that knowledge. Unsure of where her thoughts would go now, she closed her eyes to create a sense of privacy and she reviewed in her mind the best ways she could redeem herself.

"Lendri threw himself down grair stairs," the speckled leader jested, "If we're comparing anything between those two, I think it would be their eyesight." Likal mustered a snort of amusement. For being a sighthound, Lendri did manage to miss a huge set of stairs that had practically started his journey as an owi. Maybe he did it on purpose, that little turd. He couldn't help but miss his apprentice, despite his annoying zest for life. Lendri would have been over to Abaru faster than Likal had, and with much more social awareness to not make it so embarrassing in front of her siblings.
"Well, one missed a whole staircase, the other missed a wall, I don't know who I'd say was worse!" the merle collie chuffed quietly, keeping the pups from hearing him. Multicoloured eyes watched the young daredevil put herself in a virtual time-out, either to rest or maybe just out of embarrassment. Hopefully, she wouldn't be too discouraged from participating after her blunder. You're only young once, after all. "Abaru!" he called out to the young golden retriever, "How are you going to help Li'Navira when you grow up? Are you going to be our star hunter? Fastest runner in the halls?" This was a small kindness he was extending to the pup, trying to engage her in a more hopeful conversation. Frankly, he would have simply left the child alone after making sure she wasn't actively dying if the Chief wasn't sat next to him, but Li'Navira had a soft spot for the kids of the clan. He couldn't be as prickly as normal with her infectious hope that the future generation would be alright.

"Fair enough." Navira conceded. Likal wasn't wrong. Why'o ren seemed to have a knack for getting themselves into seemingly impossible predicaments. The chief herself could have probably called back to a number of embarrassing situations from her own youth that she wouldn't want dredged up.
"Hey, yeah!" She called out in support of Likal's inquiry, turning with a wagging tail and tilted head to the youngster. "What's your rama'jai, Abaru?" Navira hoped that her addition wasn't too overwhelming, so she added, "Or, what do you want it to be? What do you like to do?"
Navira's wagging tail swished widely, thumping pleasantly against her owi's haunches in a quiet display of support and thanks for his efforts. She knew very well how much he struggled to be patient with the littles. Perhaps his time with Lendri had softened him up a little bit.
Again, the chief's heart fluttered painfully at the thought of the great loss of potential they had faced. But no...she'd have to push all of that aside and focus on what they had before their paws right now. Abaru and her littermates.
