Navira peered sullenly through the tall windows of the prison mess-hall, watching the full moon rise hour by hour. It was almost time. She knew that most of her clanmates were watching it too, waiting to see if she would begin this inevitable ceremony or postpone it hopefully. Ridna had blinked her eye. An entire moon cycle had passed since the disappearances.
The chief closed her eyes and turned away from the window. She knew better than to delay it. As much as she wanted to believe that Tavi'elu and her pups were out there alive somewhere, it was only hurting the clan to scrape the lot of them together day by day to search for them all over again. The clan needed those canna elsewhere, hunting and patrolling and caring for the members of the clan that were still here.
At length, the mottled dog stood, realizing fully that eyes around the room were watching her now. She lifted her muzzle and began to speak.
"Why'os, I want you all to know that you've done great this past blink searching for our missing clanmembers. I couldn't be more proud of you." And then she paused and swallowed the lump in her throa before continuing. "Tonight though, it's time we said goodbye to Tavi'elu, Jarri'hin, Haka'far, Kira, Lendri, and Kitchi-Kitchi. Tonight we honor them with stories, and when the moon is high, we will sing Ayou Far Hali and ask the Gods to take care of Tavi and our cadets. They never got to become ele'canna, but they are still Why'o."
Again, a pause, before the collie mix lowered her head and gazed sadly down at the shadowed concrete floor, avoiding the watchful eyes of her clanmates as she spoke now, beginning the storytime herself.
"Haka'far was so mad at me in the days...the days before it all happened. He wanted Jarri'hin to be a part of Why'o Clan forever. I was so worried about politics and correcting stubborn pups that I didn't even try to give him praise for his loyalty. He was tryin' so hard to follow clan ways and I just...squashed it. Haka was a true Why'o, loyal and brave and always ready to fight for his friends. He would have made a good corporal."
And then the chief sat down, head still bowed, and waited for someone else to continue the chain of stories.

Mouse found herself deeper into Why'o territory than ever before on this deeply sad night. Since the disappearance of Jarri'hin, the lost pup that they had been excited to finally get home to her siblings, the Chief had both grown and dissolved suspicion of their neighbouring clan. Huli had told her of the pup's confusion and wanting to stay with the Why'os. When she disappeared, it was only obvious to the scrappy terrier that the other clan had hidden her somewhere. When the search parties were announced, and that four other cadets had also gone missing, that seemed like a much less likely explanation.
Now, almost a blink after the news had broke, she was amongst a clan grieving for their lost pups, and lost mother. She had met Tavi'elu only once, on the day that the bare bones of an alliance were formed between the two clans. It was a surprise to her to hear the vivacious mother had been lost. Losing five cadets at once was something no leader wanted. Mouse had lost many of her own in Rozo'ama Akoda, but for a healthy and happy clan to not have a disease outbreak but still mourn the loss of so many was truly horrific.
Her short stature lead her to stand close to the front of the throng of canna looking up at Li'Navira. She listened intently to the story of Haka'far, his loyalty and bravery to stand up to his chief for what he believed was right, even if both leaders currently present disagreed with his ideas. He would have been a difficult friend for Jarri'hin to lose, that would be for sure.
With more stories to be told in the night, Aba'Chek took the opportunity to take a step forward. "I did not have the privilege of meeting Jarri'hin. From what I have heard, she was a sweet, kind, and polite young ren. She was loyal to her friends, and it is clear that they were to her too. Though she did not make it home to Rith'r Flik, I am honoured and grateful that she found a home with the Why'os for the little time she had. You were the best family away from clan that she could have had, and I thank each and every one of you for taking care of her," the small chief's voice rang clear through the night, wobbling only slightly at the end. She nodded her head to Navira, mouth set in a firm line to stop herself from crying in public. This was a sad night, but it was also one of celebrating the lives of the young pata and corporal. Others needed to tell their stories, and she as a visitor did not need to steal the show with some hysterics.
