The clan was just gathering in the mess hall to be assigned their morning duties when it happened. The prison floor beneath their feet began to quake...just as it had done on the day of Rozo'ama Akoda. Navira stood gaping in shock with the rest of her clan until she was knocked off of her feet. It had been months since the last earthshake! What was happening?
There the chief lay with tumbled, panicking clanmates scattered all around for what felt like an eternity while the ground shook. The windows rattled. The roof dropped dust on their flattened ears. The cafeteria tables scooted noisily across the floor, bumping into a yelping dog here or there. And then, just as quickly as it had come, the shaking ended.
Navira lay still for a while, too stunned to speak. Everyone was quiet. Their galu seemed to be in one piece. None of the walls had fallen around them this time.
The mottled chief finally rose to her wavering feet and called out, breaking the deathly silence.
"Is everyone still here? C'mon, speak up. Is anyone missing?"
Her heart thudded almost painfully as she awaited an answer and forced her eyes to scan the bodies huddled about the room. The last time this had happened, they'd lost half their clan. Their chief, their general, pups, elders....all gone in a flash, never to be seen again. She wasn't ready to have another goodbye ceremony.

Shocked silence hung heavy in the air even after Navira's voice barked out her desperate order. Everyone was just too stunned to speak. It took more than one try to break through her own dry throat, but Ira finally found the voice to answer her chief. She sat up, wide-eyed, and whuffed a choked reply almost too quiet to hear.
"I'm here, Li'Navira." She said. "Ira'tui Rumm."
Even as she spoke though, the gold-and-black canna was now on her feet, peering nervously around the room. She understood Navira's anxious tone immediately...and she longed in that moment to do a head-count of her own, to gather every last golden pup from her own litter.
She knew better than to panic and start calling for them though - They needed everyone here to have a level head and answer their li'canna so that she might relax and start giving appropriate orders. Only she would be able to tell them what to do next. For now, Ira simply stood with her head on a swivel, heart in her throat. Where were her pups? She knew they were in the hall before the quake hit.
And then there was a surge of relief when she felt someone brush against her leg and realized that it was one of her own. Ilali'alo. Shaken, but okay.
"Speak up and give Li'Navira your name." She whispered quickly to the young pup, even now, in a bizarre emergency, instinctively trying to teach her ren important clan behavior.

Ilali had never in her life experienced such a frightening phenomenon. Canna could have explained rozo'ama akoda a thousand times to the little ren and she would have still been utterly terrified when it actually happened to her. One moment the pup was bounding eagerly into the mess hall, looking for adults to pester into maybe-possibly mentoring her. The next she was knocked right off of her feet when the very earth itself trembled like a scared ren. It didn't help that she could smell everyone's fear. Even the grown-ups seemed horrified by what they were experiencing.
In the aftermath, Ilali's only thought had been to find her mother. Here she stood now, pressed close to the leg of the dog she knew best, the one who would be able to explain it all to her. But her mama was instead barking her name at Li'Navira, answering the chief's call. Ilali peered up at her mother with wide eyes. It all felt very important. And...oh! She should do it too. And then it clicked, kind of, even if Ilali didn't understand the significance of why they were doing this roll-call. The chief wanted everybody to announce that they were okay.
"Er..." She stammered, her voice breaking out into an embarrassing squeak. "Ilali'alo!"

Abaru had been waiting patiently somewhat behind mama for her turn to eat. Suddenly the ground began shaking and all she could do was scoot back under one of the tables. She curled under as the earth and the table moved around her. She closed her eyes and in the dark could only imagine what she might see when she opens her eyes. Mama and the other adults had expressed the event that was the beginning of their current clan. She had never thought much on it because what had happened, happened, and she saw no reason to ponder on those things that had nothing to do with her. This, however, very much had everything to do with her reality and she couldn't recall any protocol for such a situation. As she began to feel her legs tremble more than the ground beneath her, it stopped.
Still unwilling to open her eyes she laid low to the ground and moved her ears to pick up any sound, her fur standing on end. Though the air felt thick, she felt a break in it as their clan leader called out to everyone else. She relaxed even further as she heard mama call back out and the sound of Ilali as well. Though she knew she needed to call out as well, she was struggling to not only find her voice, but to breathe at all. She squinted through her eyes and noticed the building that they were in looked the same, but she couldn't be sure. Unwilling to come from under the table, all she could do was muster out a small whine, hoping it was enough to announce her location to the rest of her clan.
