"Okay, okay, listen up." Navira called out, jumping onto a blue park bench so that the random assortment of panicked dogs could see her better. Her heart was thudding heavily in her chest and her legs were still shaky from the adrenaline that came with escaping that horrible earthquake. As her gaze passed over each and every face below, some familiar and some not, she could see it in their eyes too. They were all feeling the same bewildering fear. In a way, this somehow made Navira feel a bit better. She may have only known a fraction of these dogs, but she was not alone. "Just because we haven't found our clans - er, or our humans, doesn't mean they aren't out there." She said firmly. "We'll find them. But I think for now, we need to stick together to make sure everybody gets the help they need. I vote that we split up into two search parties to find...our friends." She choked on the word "survivors" before discarding it all together. It was too grim for those fearful faces gazing up at her. She paused to let her words sink in and then continued again. "Half of you can come with me and we'll scout the town. The other half need to go back to the Catcher's Place to make sure nobody got stuck in the wreck." The mottled Why'o suppressed a shudder as she remembered the ceilings crumbling over her head and the walls shaking and falling as she scrambled to escape with the others. She did her best to shake the feeling away. "Everyone's good with this plan, yeah?"

The beating of the black canine's heart pounded in his ears. His head throbbed. He struggled to understand what had just happened. The ground beneath his paws had rumbled and then.... nothing. Alice...? Where is Alice?! Panic had begun to set in. Thomas allowed a soft whine to escape his lips. His head was on a constant swivel. Searching. Constantly searching and surveying. Where was he? Where was anyone? Where was she? His tail hung low as he skulked forward. There was no point in waiting. Thomas had never been a dog to wait. "Stay" was a command that had constantly eluded him. Yet, he'd give anything to hear that command given in this moment. Anything to hear her voice in his ears.
His ears perked to their fullest attention, slightly flopping at the top but standing tall atop his head. There was a voice. Distinctly canine, but a voice nonetheless. He was not alone. As he approached at a hurried pace the shepherd mix came upon a crowd of other dogs. Thomas could feel the fur on the ruff of his neck starting to stand on end. All of these dogs gave off looks and scents of very apparent fear and confusing. All, that is, save one.
"Just because we haven't found our clans - er, or our humans, doesn't mean they aren't out there."
There it was - hope. The humans were surely still out there. His human was out there, somewhere, and Thomas would find her. He lifted his head with his renewed faith.
"We'll find them."
His tail began to sway a bit in his boosted morale. He barely heard the female mutt's continued speech. Yes! Yes! He would help, then he would be able to find her. Most certainly he would!
"Half of you can come with me and we'll scout the town. The other half need to go back to the Catcher's Place to make sure nobody got stuck in the wreck."
He hoped to help scout the town. If Alice was still in the area that's most likely where he would find her.
"Everyone's good with this plan, yeah?"
Thomas barked a "Yes!" of approval. His mouth hanging ajar with his tongue lolling. His tail in a wide arched wag. He had let his rambunctious youth get the better of him again. But he was ready. There was no more time to spend waiting around. She was out there. She needed him, and he needed her. He would find her, even if it took until the end of his days. But first, these other dogs needed his help. His own kind needed his help. And he would answer their call.

Rozo'ama Akoda. The storm that shakes mountains. Uru had grown up hearing about earthquakes like that, but she never thought she would experience one herself.
For probably the very first time in her life, Uru had been shocked into silence. Never in her life had the big white puppy experienced such horror as when that building began to crumble around herself and her brother. Here she stood now, filthy, scratched, leaning heavily against her dark-furred littermate for comfort with a hundred strange dogs milling about as if they too did not know what to do with themselves. It was only when the speckle-furred dog hopped onto a bench and began to address the crowd that Uru's sharp ears perked. She turned her attention to the dog and found herself agreeing.
Yes, their families were out there. They needed to be found. And then Uru realized with a jolt that Navira was right on several accounts. They might have left dogs behind in that shelter. She had left in such a blind panic that she hadn't stopped to help anyone. Who does that? Uru, apparently! As Navira began to talk about dividing dogs up into search parties, Uru felt her dirty white paws beginning to dance, eager to get moving. She knew exactly which group she was going with.
"Yes!" She barked a little too loudly at just about the same time as another black dog in the crowd. There was a brief, kind of awkward pause and then she started to push through the crowd, tossing her head to shout a quick goodbye to her brother.
"You look for Ma and the rest of the clan!" She said. "I'm going back to the Catcher's place!" And without waiting to see how her brother protested their separation (she knew he would) she bounded off to the outskirts of the group, smacking her shoulder into one older dog in the process.
"Oops!" She said. "Sorry!" But she didn't stop until she had joined the dogs that had already begun to divide themselves away from the spotty-coated female. "I'm here to help!" She announced heroically to the strangers, still prancing in place on her paws as if she were ready to run. Besides helping the strangers, she was actually dying to know what the shelter looked like after that earthquake. It felt like the WHOLE thing had been crumbling into pieces!
