The days following the earthquake had passed quickly for little Lendri. He had almost completely forgotten the terrifying ordeal of being practically thrown from the animal shelter without his mother. He had no idea how frantically she had searched for his sister in the wreckage. He didn't remember much about the icy cold ground underneath the bush, or crying out for his Mama, or how deeply she had grieved the night his father was sung into the heavens with Ayou Far Hali. As far as he knew, life was grand. He had spent the last week tucked away in a warm nest with his mother, brother, and sister as though nothing was out of the ordinary. Like most puppies his age, he had grown rapidly not only in body but in mind.
His once only vaguely dog-shaped body had begun to take on real form. He now had longer, stronger legs that allowed him to toddle through the halls at his mother's tail-end. (Probably to poor Tavi's dismay) His ears had begun to stand and he could hear and see everything now. He was much more aware of his surroundings. His whole world was a dark and dirty prison lit only by long, filthy windows...and it was a magical place. He had lately enjoyed leaving his nest to watch the grown-ups and bigger pata trek off to the dining room every morning. The grown-ups were often slower, happy to chat and shoulder one another around with a laugh while they meandered off to breakfast, but the puppies...oh the puppies! Lendri's tiny tail would wag at the sight of them.
They were always running, tumbling, racing one another to the ends of the halls faster than Lendri's tiny legs could ever carry him. There were a few times that his siblings had bounced clumsily off after the apprentices, but they they never made it far. They weren't fast enough. Lendri hadn't tried to catch the bigger pups yet. He had simply hung back and contentedly watched his brother and sister try. Though he hadn't tried it, just watching them was enough to slowly build his own confidence. He was going to run with them.
And so here he sat this morning, sitting eagerly beside the dining hall entrance waiting for the bigger dogs to come thumping along like giant rabbits.
