"AND THOUGH HE IS BUT LITTLE, HE IS FIERCE!"
|
| Ridna had blinked once since the earthquake. An entire moon cycle had passed, yet the pain of losing most of their clan still hung painfully on Huli's heart. With a deep sigh he slipped through a crack in the wall of the now abandoned freight station that the clan had been sheltering in. The morning outside still had a nasty chill to it. It cut right through his short, wiry fur. The Rith'r Flik general shuddered slightly and shook out his fur, fluffing it like a small bird before stepping out into the frozen world.
Spraying out from the station was a now familiar, yet chaotic sight. Some of the train cars that once sat neatly on their tracks were now tipped onto their sides. Debris and train metal lay half-buried in several weeks' worth of snow. Dogs had to tread carefully now to avoid cutting their paws on broken metal and shattered glass from the trains and buildings that hadn't weathered Rozo'ama Akoda. And then, to top off the strangeness of it all, surrounding the railyard was a thick forest that hadn't existed a month ago. It was all a mess.
The clan had done their best to make the most of it. Despite their low numbers, they had begun to rebuild, to clear away the debris as best they could through heavy snowfall, and to breech the forests in search of chek and fli to eat. Even now, Huli could see two of his clanmates returning with their jaws full of rodents. He nodded at them appreciatively. Those were the kinds of Ants this clan needed! The kind that woke before dawn to fill everyone's bellies.
"Ah, there's a pair of mighty hunters if I ever saw any!" He barked out after them with his chin held high and a small smirk on his whiskered lips. "Look's like luck's on our side this morning, eh boys? Go on, get inside and warm your paws. Tell 'em Rali'Huli said that those who hunted under Ridna'kah this morning get first choice'a that lout. And send whoever's still snoring out here to pick through this blasted metal and get it out of the walk-paths!"
The scruffy mutt had a different kind of hunt in mind for himself today though. He was off to visit Mira'hlei. The healer had had his work cut out for him lately, dealing with his own head injury as well as running low on herbs. Winter was always hard on healers' stores, but the use of supplies to heal earthquake injuries had nearly wiped them out. Huli had set aside this day to help Mira in whatever way he could. Today, he was going to hunt for flowers.
He found himself snorting as he thought of himself out picking flowers with Mira. Imagine that!

The timid pom pom was not having a good time. Well, okay, no one was really having a good time as far as he could tell. Sure, the livelier of his clanmates had a quip or joke locked and loaded for any situation, but all of this destruction and injury meant work, work, and more work. And Mira’hlei was one of the only healers left, which meant every scrape and stubbed toe came through to him.
It was stressful. It was scary. He didn’t like it. The tiny dog whimpered low in his throat, rubbing his front paws together in an attempt to soothe the soreness of his paw pads. It didn’t work.
Truthfully, Mira’hlei wasn’t cut out for this whole rough and tumble Rithr’flik thing. He’d have been better suited as a pet, for certain, and it had only been fear and love of his clan that had kept him from disappearing in the night prior to the earthquake. And now, with no humans left, it was either stick with his clan or make it on his own— and the choice there was obvious, even if it was kinda miserable right now.
So there he was, pathetic tears in his eyes as he carefully pressed flowers flat to the floor so that they could dry and be preserved. It was undoubtedly a sight that wouldn’t shock Huli, since Mira had always been a cryer. Whether it was a squashed bug, his own headache (a constant since the quake) or a rainy day, Mira’hlei always seemed to find some reason to sniffle.
When the mohawk’ed dog entered his personal train car, the pom pom yelped, the sudden appearance of the general causing the fluffy male to throw a pawful of herbs his way– a bundle of leaves that failed to connect, drifting sadly to the ground. He’d totally forgotten that the other dog was supposed to help him look for herbs today.
”Huli,” He whined, watery eyes squinting as he sniffed, ”You scared me. Are you hurt? You don’t look hurt.” He said, tiny tail thumping against the ground as he raised his nose to sniff the air. No blood. ”You– you better not be here to ask me to spar with you, again. I’m no good at fighting, I already told you. And showed you. I’m only good for flowers, you know that.” He kicked a paw against the metal floor of the train car, maybe a little petulant. ”So– so what did you, um, need?”

"AND THOUGH HE IS BUT LITTLE, HE IS FIERCE!"

| It was true - Huli wasn't surprised in the least to see his soft little clanmate sniffling over his flower-press. It had become a constant drip - Literally. Some of the leaves that they had been administered to chew or press to their wounds had been salty and a bit too damp, soaked in Mira's snot and tears. For a brief, alarming moment, Huli had wondered if the pomeranian had a severe allergy to the plants - But no, he was only dripping because he was...emotional.
Huli hopped into the car, yet didn't flinch at all over Mira's resulting over-dramatic display - Even in the wake of a pawful of leaves being chucked at his face. He followed the fluttering leaves down to the ground with his eyes before speaking.
"Calm down, ya overgrown pata'mira." He gruffed impatiently. "I'm not here to spar." He couldn't help but add though..."We can put that on the agenda for tomorrow, weather willing." It was a tease, but he said it in such a tone that it might be hard for Mira to decipher it as such.
"I came to drag your fluffy tail into the forest to help me hunt plants, don't ya remember? Come on, we talked about it only the other day! You're the only one that knows what you're doing in that way, so you'd better get yer paws moving! I can't do it myself." He tossed his head for Mira to follow him out of the train car.
Huli spoke bluntly, but there were no truer words. If he were to go out to do this task on his own, he'd probably end up bringing home Eliri'rumblier to feed to the clan. Even if he had to carry the hesitant little healer like a backpack, they'd have to do this together.
