February 6th At last it seemed that the weather had given them a break. Winter was on her last legs, and Mouse knew that soon the pleasantries of spring would pepper the land. While the weather was by no means warm, at least it wasn't snowing anymore. The fresh powder was more difficult for her stumpy legs to trudge through, but she was determined to see what this newly errupted forest had to offer. Enough progress had been made with the clean-up of the base, and hunting had gone well enough that their little hoard was at a comfortable level. Mouse knew that her territory could not only be limited to the railyard forever. This forest held potentials beyond her imagining. The backroads that had once lead to their home seemingly vanished into thin air. The sparse grasses scattered in between cracks of asphalt were replaced instead by lush grasses and large trees. At least, she assumed there were grasses under all this damned snow! Though the Ants were small, their prey could not only consist of chek and fli forever. Previously, the clan had been large enough to orchestrate strategic Pullings to sustain them. With the devastating losses from the collapse last moon, there were barely enough heads to form a hunting party, let alone a Pulling. With the strange happenings, the Chief was wise enough to not go on this excursion alone. She asked Huli to accompany her, not only as a close friend but as a second level head that she could bounce ideas off of. She wanted to expand territory, and if there was one canna who would be on the same wavelength it would be him. Not to mention that if something were to happen, he was next in line to be the Chief and she would haunt him if he didn't follow through. Hassi'hin, who had miraculously also made her way out of the rubble, was also requested to come along. The sturdy bully was easily one of the strongest members of Rithr'flik, and Mouse knew her to be reliable. With her little party assembled, she hoped this could get done quickly so they could curl up on some blankets back in the railyard and out of this freezing ice. The nearby clans that she could usually scent heading further away from the rail yard seemed lost, as if they had never been there at all. Running on the assumption that the snow had simply burried their huffa, the Chief pushed forwards. "This area seems flat enough that chek would build their burrows. It could be an easy hunting ground. Come Rahani'huda Mirahu (spring) hopefully they breed and we'll have a stable prey hoard," she pondered, mostly to Huli but in no way excluding Hassi. It would be an odd move to try and secretly plot a territory expansion for the whole clan. The sandy terrier mix took another deep breath in, trying to search for scents under the snow but instead finding canna. Her brows furrowed in confusion, swivelling in the snow to better face the direction the wind blew the intrusive scent in from. "Who's there? Show yourself!" she yapped, her tone airing more on authoritative trepidation than the classic grouchy huff when her space was intruded. She wasn't back down from a fight, regardless of whether Huli and Hassi were here alongside her, but with these odd circumstances, it was probably better to see who, or what, she was dealing with before she charged in jaws blazing. The bully's mouth honestly tasted stale. She couldn't help the distaste that formed on her face as she smacked her gums together momentarily to attempt to bring more moisture. Despite her momentary discomfort, she was quite pleased to finally be on a mission. She had been in such a subdued state since the earthquake changed their world.
Her dwarf, but pointed ears swiveled towards her chief as the other female spoke. She hummed in response to show she was listening. She was just as interested in growing their territory. After all, Hassi was all about focusing her interests on the pack.
It was then Mouse snarled out to the scent that has wafted through the air. The brown bully's lips immediately pulled back to reveal her teeth as a snarl rumbled through her short body. While this pack may be of smaller breeds, they definitely weren't the type to tremble amongst taller canna.
"If you force our paws, we will come find you." She threatened whoever this dog was.

"AND THOUGH HE IS BUT LITTLE, HE IS FIERCE!"
|
| When Chief Aba'chek had asked Huli to join her on a trip into the forest, Huli had readily accepted. For one thing, it was his job as a general (and Mouse's friend) to stand beside her as she broke new ground in the name of Rith'r Flik Clan. For another, it had been itching to learn more about this new territory that had magically grown up through the town overnight. Only now he was seeing that it didn't just grow up through the town. It had eaten it all up and left nothing behind but a few scattered bones. It was enough to make even the brave little Rali feel uneasy.
Still, he trudged along importantly through the stupid deep snow, chin held high, tail held higher, proud to be a part of this important outing. When his chief spoke of the possibilities of this place having enough spring lout to feed their clan, Huli nodded his head in agreement and opened his own scruffy jaws to answer her, but he was quickly interrupted by the scent and sound of larger canna making their way through the trees. His hackles immediately rose and he pulled his lips back to show tiny, sharp teeth.
"Come on, you heard 'em" Huli gruffed. "Out with ya. We know you're there. No point'n trying to be sneaky. You're facing three Rith'r Flik Clan. Any smart Kah'ren dog knows that's not a fight you want."

"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"
|
| Rith'r Flik weren't the only clan out scouting the potential of Kah'ren forest. Navira and the Why'os, however, had a slight advantage - They had been staking out the land and leaving their markers all over the place for the last moon-cycle. They had pushed the boundaries a little at a time, stretching their new reach farther and farther into the forest. No one had stopped them. Just as the humans and the town had vanished, so had several other clans that might have bared their teeth at the Whyo's audacity to take so much territory for themselves.
Today, she and two of her clanmates were once again pushing their limits to see where this new forest world led them. They had stepped out of their own scent-laden patches of forest and into unfamiliar, unmarked land. Brazenly, as was the Why'o way, Navira had led the charge, snuffling through the snowy forest, pausing only to leave her own Why'o huffa behind on a tree or bush. At her side were her sister, Nahara Nook'zelfa and the faithful yet sharp-tongued Tavi'elu. As she paused to thrust her nose into a snow-laden berry bush, she cast a wary eye over to her sibling.
There had been no hesitation in the young chief's mind when deciding to bring Tavi along, but her rival sister was a different story. Navira knew that she needed to find a way to mend relations with the bitter-hearted Nahara though, and that needed to start somewhere. What better way than forcibly dragging her along on a marking expedition led by the sister who had snatched leadership from under her jaws?
"How are you getting on, Nookie?" She whuffed out to her sister in what she hoped was a lighthearted tone. "Have your paws frozen off yet?"
But almost immediately as she spoke, another set of unfamiliar voices responded. There was shocked moment of silence as Navira exchanged a glance with her clanmates, as the strangers demanded that they show themselves, before Navira threw back her head and gave a sudden Why'o howl that echoed eerily through the trees. It would be only natural for her clanmates to join in and create a threatening racket that surely sounded like a whole pack of dogs rather than just three.
And when it was finished, she stepped forward and called back to these unseen Rith'r Flik, probably a bit too boldly, "Well, you're on land claimed by the Why'o clan! Are you sure that's a fight that you want?"
Inside though, she was shaking. She'd never led a battle before, let alone against a pack of Rith'r Flik. As bold as she tried to make herself out to be, she had heard stories about these tiny warriors. The voice was right - They were legendary. No dog wanted to be on their bad side.
With a nod to her clanmates to follow her closely, she began to approach the voices until their three tiny forms materialized when the Why'os peaked a small snowy crest. She looked down upon them with her head held high, teeth drawn slightly, honestly a bit surprised with how tiny they actually were. They looked like colorful little rats dropped in the snow! How could they even launch a proper attack when they were practically chest deep in a bog of white stuff?
Still, Navira did not let her guard down.
"I am Li'Navira of Why'o Clan." She called down to the Tiny Ones. "And you are about to cross territory marked with our huffa. What business do you have nosing around in our forest?" Did that sound leaderly? Hopefully that sounded like something a leader would say. She wanted to make it very clear that the territory was not fair game.

Her new packmates may consider Nahara the 'rebel' sister--the sibling that rolled her eyes at Navira's speeches and appeared bored during most gatherings. Some would quietly whisper 'if she hates not being the leader so much... why does she stay?' Well... That was simply none of their damn business! If she wanted to sit and suffer then she would do just that.
She was dazed momentarily, lost in her own argumentative thoughts before being shaken out of her mind by Navira's voice. Oh, that nickname made dread crawl down her spine. She hesitantly glanced at Tavi, almost expecting her to howl in laughter. Nahara carefully kept from looking at her and just when she was about to make the atmosphere uncomfortable with a retort--the voices came through the wind.
Despite their rocky relationship, when her eyes met those of her littermate she immediately knew what was needed of her. She tilted her head to the sky and released her vocals. Her song was deep, some may even call it brawny. It echoed pleasantly with her sister's, making it clear as day of their relations.
Nahara was able to drop her internal struggle for rebellion as her bristling form follow Navira towards the voices. She seemed almost excited to take her rage out on someone else.
Whoops, she had to cover up her chuckle with a cough as their small forms came into focus. She didn't need Navira scolding her in front of these little twerps. Shaking off the laughter she managed to hold in, she stood tall and raised her chin to glare down at the shorter canna.

A canna could be missing their ears, nose, and eyes, and still know that Li’Navira and her sister didn’t always get along. Tavi’elu, personally, had her fair share of skepticism about attending an expedition with both the other females at once; she listened to enough bickering from her ren, and wasn’t keen to field another few hours of snipping from her adult clanmates as well.
It seemed, though, that she had either misjudged them or that they were in a better mood than usual. The patrol passed in comfortable silence, interrupted by Tavi’s occasional chatter or commentary as they passed through the woods. After the weeks they’d lived here, it was slowly becoming second nature to traverse through the dense wilderness. It wasn’t that she was losing her street smarts, she didn’t think, just that she was adding a new set of instincts to her already considerable arsenal. She still had no idea what to do about all this blasted snow, however.
”Nookie,” She snickered under her breath when Navira piped up, gaze canting over to Nahara in a way that promised an excess of teasing soon to come. But before she could really go in on the other dog, three little voices piped up, their origin far lower than she could have expected– but in fluent canna-tongue all the same.
It was second nature to raise her voice alongside that of her fellow she-dogs, her own chilling why’ooooo far higher in pitch than that of Navira and Nahara’s– more akin to the scream of a hyena than the howl of a dog. She hadn’t been bred to be a howler, after all, only learning the call in her youth through sheer stubbornness. The words of the opposing dogs set her teeth on edge, and she took up the rear of the Why’o trio, lanky form ensuring that she was still visible despite her position.
”Their noses must still be stuffed full of dust from the rozo'ama akoda (earthquake). After all, I’m sure that’s the only reason they would approach our huffa and accuse us of skulking around.” She barked out sharply, eyeing the Rithr’flik up and down with a critical eye. They weren’t much larger than her pups, to be honest, but their teeth were far sharper by the looks of it. Sharp enough to slice the delicate tendons of her ankles if she wasn’t careful.
But she didn’t think they could down all three of them before she managed to punt one into the sun, if they disrespected her chief, so who flippin’ cared?

The accompanying barks of her clanmates were fuel for the spitfire. The crunches of pawsteps grew closer as the band of rogues approached the mighty trio and a voice floated over the air, "Well, you're on land claimed by the Why'o clan! Are you sure that's a fight that you want?" A huff of indignant shock at these canna's gall left the chief in a puff of condensation. The Why'o clan had never been too much of a concern. Their only contact previously had really been that the road to the railyard lead into the city, which she assumed was their territory. Perhaps rozo'ama akoda had displaced them into the forest? Either way, this was no way to talk to the leader of Rith'r Flik! Their screaming was a mere annoyance at this close distance. Such a waste of energy, they had already declared themselves Why'os! The trio came into view, two collies and a hound sticking their noses into business they had no need to be in. "I am Li'Navira of Why'o Clan. And you are about to cross territory marked with our huffa. What business do you have nosing around in our forest?" the apparent new leader of the clan barked down to them. Aba'chek chose to ignore the snarky comment of her skeleton of a companion, despite it setting a burning blaze inside her. Though small, she was not one to be disrespected, especially by some canna who couldn't keep snow off her skin. "I am Li'Aba'Chek of Rithr'flik Clan and I believe you just said we were not even on your land! This forest borders our territory and as far as I'm concerned, whatever you haven't claimed yet is perfectly up for the taking!" Pausing for a moment to take a breath, Mouse scanned over the dogs before her. They were young, and since it was this Li'Navira before her and not Li'Randan'ru, she figured that the clan had faced some tragedy as well. This was no time for bickering - rather it could be a time to strengthen both clans. "We both clearly want to use this forest. I believe we can strike up an agreement of some sort. A proper negotiation has never hurt anyone. This forest is big enough to feed both clans. Why don't we split it? You can have your half, we will have ours, and we can go on our merry ways," the feisty Chief offered. Negotiation with clans was a familiar task to her. Even before the great kidnapping, it had been her job as chief to check in with the alliances made once Eliri'fli passed to reinforce the bond or renegotiate their agreements. She was more than willing to sit here in the snow all day to sort out this conundrum. Hopefully, the loud-mouthed one with fur shorter than her would get cold and go home so she wouldn't go deaf in due course. The terrier-mix leaned her weight backwards, coming to a resting sit in the show. It was a move to show that she was not trying to launch an attack or escalate this any further. She wasn't some hot-headed apprentice anymore. She was the Li'Aba'Chek of Rithr'Flik and after the tragedy that rocked Kah'ren, she was not about to wage war. Mouse's decorous act made Hassi honestly feel anxious. Her eyes dashed between her chief and the strangers. She hesitated, her hackles still raised and her muscles obviously tense. Slowly, much like a lame prey, she settled her rump into the snow and eyed the large dogs. She understood this was a wise move, but Hassi simply trusted no one besides the clan that brought her in.
She supposed this was the reason Mouse was the leader. Her substantial frame was rather cumbersome compared to the small she-dog that lead them. They were unequal, yet she felt a loyalty to each of her packmates. Her gaze softened an inch, her expression becoming less tense as she titled her chin upwards, proudly facing these massive canines.
Curious to whether they would accept the deal or need to get roughed up for an agreement to be made.

"AND THOUGH HE IS BUT LITTLE, HE IS FIERCE!"
|
| Huli let his hackles fall when the Why'os revealed themselves, but his muscles remained tense, eyes flickering between each of the potential opponents that still held threatening postures. He recognized the two speckled ones if only by their faces, for he had seen them briefly before during meetings between clans. Maybe. It had been long ago. The tall furless one he had never seen before. His ears perked though when one of the Speckle Coats introduced themselves as Li'Navira. Did that mean that rozo'ama akoda had attacked Why'o clan as well? There wasn't time to consider it before the lanky red and white mutt began flapping her tongue.
He found his whiskered lip curling in annoyance, hackles going up once again. He took a threatening step forward.
"Watch your mouth, shu'a!" Huli barked at Tavi. But before he could go on, his chief began to speak, and he obediently fell back to allow her the floor. He backed up and sat down beside his chief, trying his best to ignore the cold now creeping into his haunches. Even then, he cast a long glare at the sharp-tongued Tavi.
It was no surprise to him when Li'Aba tossed out her proposal to share the land - If they were at full strength, perhaps they would fight for the forest. Yet Huli knew as well as any that Rith'r Flik had been dealt a huge blow recently - It would be better to take what they could get right now without risking the lives of their surviving clanmates.
Huli turned to Navira as his own chief wrapped up her speech, curious to see what this new leader had in her. He could only guess, but he was pretty sure that Why'o and Rith'r Flik shared the same problem. Surely she wouldn't turn this offer down.

"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"
|
| "Nahara!" Navira scolded under her breath, recognizing her sister's cough as exactly what it was - A giggle. And then a moment later, in an equally warning tone, "Tavi..." And with that, she lifted her chin once more and glared down at the small dogs, though her heart jumped to her throat when the tiny Rith'r Flik chief introduced herself using her full name. Oops. Navira recognized instantly that she should have done that as well rather than using a fraction of her own name in such a casual way. Li'Navira'e Hu'grair! She thought bitterly to herself. That was her title. That would have sounded much better.
The other chief, Li'Aba'chek, didn't seem to notice though, much to Navira's relief. She was more focused on...oh. Navira's ears almost fell when she realized her clan's blunder. They had laid claim on only half of this forest by scent...and had just told Rith'r Flik that the rest of it was ripe for the taking. Did they have the strength to fight this clan for it? Probably not.
Before she could acknowledge her blunder though, Li'Aba kept rolling, delivering a proposal that made Navira pin her ears in obvious displeasure. She didn't answer right away. She simply glared down at the small dogs, mouth drawn into a thin line, weighing her options.
And then she spoke.
"You're right." She said. "We've only marked half of this forest. But there was a town right here a few days ago and the whole thing belonged to Why'os. When the forest grew up, it took our town." She stomped her paw on the ground as she spoke, as if patting the land beneath her paw in a show of ownership. "Our huffa is gone because the town is gone, so we've been replacing what we lost. Did your clan lose their territory in rozo'ama akoda too? Their huffa?"
She wasn't above negotiating, and hopefully her tone would portray that she meant no harm in asking for Li'aba's motives first. But truly, she thought, if anyone was getting the forest, shouldn't it be the canna that had owned the town?

"You're right. We've only marked half of this forest. But there was a town right here a few days ago, and the whole thing belonged to Why'os. When the forest grew up, it took our town. Our huffa is gone because the town is gone, so we've been replacing what we lost. Did your clan lose their territory in rozo'ama akoda too? Their huffa?" The Why'o Chief questioned. What the young canna said was true, the town had been Why'o territory for longer than she could remember. The rails leading up to them, however, was Rithr'Flik territory through and through. With this new forest, it seemed that everyone's huffa was erased.
"We did. The territory leading to the town from the railyard was ours until this forest came and replaced it all. I'm sure the town is large enough for the Why'os, and we have no interest in trying to encroach on that. I hope you share the same respect for our rails. For this forest, however, I think we can share it. Surely it's big enough for the both of us," Aba'Check relayed, pausing to see the reaction of the merle collie before continuing, "I think we could do joint patrols. A Why'o and a Rithr'Flik patrolling together, each reporting back to us respectively. We could share the land to hunt freely and if there are any border issues, we could meet here again to discuss, as leaders. What are your thoughts?" She knew it was a big ask. She hadn't even remotely tried to pull off something so big before rozo'ama akoda. Most of her negotiations were prey for protection, the power in numbers of the Ants to whoever would supply them with food.
This idea of sharing the borders was unprecedented, but it would give each Clan a strong alliance, if that was up Navira's alley. The terrier mix secretly hoped that this new Why'o Chief's youth would lend her to be more pliable to her ideas. Li'Randan'ru was much more conserved from what Li'Eliri'fli had told her. Their agreements were predetermined when Mouse came into power, so she had little to do with the Why'os at the time. Hopefully, in this new future, they could work closer together.

"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"

| Navira listened, gaze set firmly on the smaller dog, ears perked forward to show that she was clearly hanging onto every word. She did not possess the stoic calmness of an experienced leader. Nay, she wore her heart on her sleeve and it clearly showed as her hackles slowly began to lower under the realization that Rith'r Flik had fallen victim to the thieving earthquake as well. They had lost their territory too - And probably much of their clan.
"I'm sorry to hear that." She mumbled quickly when the little chief confirmed that they too had lost their territory.
Because of this new knowledge, she was humbled enough to not balk immediately at the suggestion that they share the forest. In fact, she was startled to find that she was considering it. Surely her clanmates were bristling and gnashing inside already at the audacity of Aba'fli, but Navira, after giving it some thought, could find no fault in the idea.
Both clans were weakened, both had been stripped of generations of clan huffa when their homes had been ripped away and replaced. Both needed one another's help.
"I don't see a problem with teaming up to work the forest over." Navira said when Li'aba was finally finished. "Rith'r Flik and Why'o, allied to keep everyone else away? You get the little lout and we get the big stuff, if I'm thinkin' what I think you're thinkin. We each send a team out here at dawn to pair up and help each other out, yeah?"
Her heart was thudding in her chest as she spoke, unsure if this was truly the right thing...and knowing that her sister was listening, ready to chew her tail off the second they got back home.

Beady eyes peered up at the merle Chief of the Why'os as she contemplated her offer. This Navira was green and fresh, a bright new face for a new era of the Why'o Clan, but that also meant she was unpredictable and any progress was practically serendipitous. "I don't see a problem with teaming up to work the forest over." Rith'r Flik and Why'o, allied to keep everyone else away? You get the little lout, and we get the big stuff, if I'm thinkin' what I think you're thinkin'. We each send a team out here at dawn to pair up and help each other out, yeah?"
Li'Aba nodded along as Li'Navira described the plan more in-depth. "Agreed. If hard times fall upon either clan then we can support one another with hunting. Any threats to the forest by predators or other Clans will be dealt with by both of us together as a united front. I think this will be a great start for a good relationship between our Clans. Shall we start tomorrow? I'll let my canna know, perhaps we could send one of each of our companions to make sure all goes well for the first joint patrol. What are your thoughts?" she offered, grateful that the difficult part of the negotiation was finally over. Hopefully this last idea wouldn't be the final straw and they could move on with their day amicably.
