"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"
|
| It was early yet, but Navira could already tell that it was going to be a gloomy sort of day. Dark, heavy clouds hung low in the sky, threatening to dump another load of snow upon what remained of the town. The Why'o chief had her paws resting on one of the dirty widow sills inside the prison's hallways. Her nose was pressed against the already smudged glass, peering out at the shadowy weather outside in an effort to gauge how cold it would be today. She huffed, and that ended her view right then and there, for her breath instantly fogged the pane.
The mottled young dog dropped away to find a companion to join her on the outside. Everyone else would soon be finishing their breakfast in the old mess hall. She poked her head into the doorway and scanned the scatter of Why'o bodies until she found just the dog that she wanted to see today...the ever-quiet Rahki'navir.
Her brow furrowed at the sight of him. He always seemed so...sad. Of course he was! He had suffered a great loss when Rozo'ama Akoda hit. They all had, but Rahki had taken the loss of his mentor, Canna'e, very hard. Navira's mission today was not only to find a buddy to visit the borders with her, but also to make sure that a fellow Why'o's heart was mending properly.
"Hey!" She called out, trotting into the room and weaving around various furry bodies to reach her target. "Rahki, how would you like to go out and walk the river border with me? Actually - No "would ya's," you're coming with, let's get goin'! Er- After you finish your breakfast." She tilted her head towards the door for good measure and lolled her tongue in what she hoped was an inviting smile.

Rah'ki... might have a problem. Ever since the rescue from the shelter and discovering his mentor's body, he'd been eating less and less. Just enough to keep himself alive but not enough to keep a healthy weight. He wouldn't call himself malnourished just yet, but he was certainly on his way there in a month or two.
Currently he was staring down at a katha'chek. A squirrel one of the long-legged dogs had pulled down straight from a tree. He should have chosen something smaller. He'd nibbled on it a bit, too much to justify putting it back on the kill pile, but he'd have to force himself to eat the rest.
A canna hollered out a greeting and started in his direction. At first Rah'ki ignored them, thinking they were talking to somebody else. He only realized it was Navira when she was right next to him, and only realized she was talking to him when she said his name.
Navira... wanted to walk with him? On a patrol? Just the two of them? Had he done something wrong? He hadn't been putting much effort into his duties to the Clan since Canna'e's death. Did she want to talk to him about that?
Anxiety made what little he'd eaten curdle in his belly, and Rah'ki mentally dismissed the thought of eating the rest. "Have you eaten yet? You can have the rest." he said, nosing it over to his chief. He hadn't seen her amongst the dogs choosing their breakfast so he assumed she hadn't had something yet.

| Upon closer inspection, Navira was startled to realize that her clanmate was burdened with more than just a sad face. Rahki also had a slightly unkempt look about him, and he was showing the subtle looks of a dog who wasn't getting enough to eat. The clan leader's gaze fell to the katha'chek at his paws. For a moment she wondered why he looked the way he did if he were getting his share of lout...but then he answered her thoughts by shoving the picked at remains of the rodent over to her to finish.
He was sick - And not in a way that the healers could fix with medicine. No, he needed something else...Navira just wasn't sure what yet.
"No thanks, I've already had my share this morning." She said quickly, waving her paw in a dismissive, casual way. It wasn't a lie. She'd already wolfed down two small fli before everyone had woken. "If I eat too much before running the borders, my belly will start cramping. Not fun! But you really should finish a little more'a that. You need energy. It's a big walk."
To seal the idea that she wasn't going anywhere until he was done eating, the grey mutt made herself comfortable by plopping down beside Rahki and scratching an itchy ear with a back paw. Despite her previous eagerness to get going, she now appeared as though she had all the time in the world to waste.
While she scratched, she talked.
"Katha'chek never were my favorite lout." Navira mused. "Too much hair and not enough meat. But it sure is fun to chase 'em."

Rah'ki realized, with an odd sinking sort of feeling, that Navira had no intention of taking the katha'chek from him. Even worse, she seemed pretty determined that he eat the rest.
Rah'ki grumbled to himself before taking it back and picking at it. "I still remember when you were tripping over your paws bumbling about the camp as a pup. You were never this bossy back then." he huffed, snapping up a quick bite.
It was tasteless in his mouth, but he forced himself to chew and swallow under Navira's gaze. He took another bite as Navira scratched behind her ear. Rah'ki idly hoped they weren't about to deal with a flea epidemic. The last thing the Clan needed was to itch all day every day when they were still recovering from the Rozo'ama Akoda.
The reminder of the cataclysm and everything it took from them made his heart ache. Rah'ki didn't want to eat, he really didn't, but he knew Navira would not be moved. Better to get it over with.
He finished the katha'chek in just two more bites with zero enthusiasm, making a face as he chewed and swallowed. "There. I'm done. Let's go."

| Navira flashed the older dog an innocent smile and wagged her tail. He could complain all he wanted, but at least he was eating something. It was a start.
"Well. Maybe you just weren't paying attention." She answered him playfully. "Nahara's always called me bossy. But hey, now I'm the boss!" Her tone was light-hearted and jovial with no intended malice. She was just trying to strike up conversation with the old grump.
And then Rahki was finished and she was hopping back to her feet and falling into step beside him as an equal, showing no indication that she wanted to be the "boss" on this mission. "Alright! Off to the river then."
As the two made their way out the door and into the chilly, dreary day outside, Navira continued to talk. She had a few motives for getting Rahki out into the world today, and those would soon become clear.
"Border patrols have really been stretched thin lately." She said, casting a brief glance at her clanmate as they trotted along. "The disappearances really left us in a weird place, didn't they?"

Rah'ki followed Navira out of the camp, glancing at her when she fell into step beside him but otherwise not reacting to it. "That's the way of all siblings, or so I'm told." he mused aloud. "You either fall in behind them or you're in their way. Mind I've never had siblings that I can remember, so it's purely observational."
They left the relative warmth of their shelter behind and Rah'ki shivered heavily. His pelt wasn't exactly thin, but it didn't have the thickness of Why'o born canna. He eyed Navira's thick fur jealously before responding to her comment wryly. "Do you mean the disappearances of the humans, allowing us to expand our borders to the entire town up to and including where they used to chase us out? Or the disappearances of our Clanmates and thus less bodies for us to put on patrol to allow the others to rest? Either way, agreed."
A sharp wind blew suddenly, causing a vicious shudder to ripple down his spine. Rah'ki sneezed and shook his head, pawing at his nose afterward. "I hate the cold." he whined. "At least when the humans were around we could leech off their heated buildings while we were out and about. Now their buildings are as cold as ours."

| "Yeah, both of those." Navira said, glancing again at Rahki as he shivered in the bitter morning air. Without thinking twice about her actions, she sidestepped a few paces closer until she was walking shoulder to shoulder with the other canna, pressing herself against him to share her warmth as they walked. It was said that when one Why'o felt pain or discomfort, the rest felt it too. Her clan instincts were kicking in now on behalf of Rahki. Share and share alike.
"That's true. We'd do good to figure out how they kept their homes so warm. But...you know, the inside of our galu wouldn't feel so cold at night if you slept in the pile with everyone else." She half-teased, bumping her shoulder against his to show that she meant no harm.
"We could even start with just one canna so that you at least don't freeze to death while you're figuring it all out." She began slyly, testing the waters for her pitch. "A little one, even. Perhaps Tavi will share one of her pups. Kira, or maybe Haka'far."

Rah'ki didn't even glance to this side when a sudden warmth and pressure appeared. He hadn't expected any different. It was the Why'o way, after all. If Navira had been the first to say she was cold, he would have done the same thing.
For all the good his short fur would have done her, anyway. There was no doubt in Rah'ki's mind that he was benefiting more from their shared heat than her, and that bothered him more than the cold had.
He did, however, stiffen up when Navira teased about not sleeping piled up with their Clanmates. She didn't mean it cruelly, he knew her well enough to know that. But it was a reminder of WHY he wasn't sleeping near anybody anymore.
He'd used to sleep bundled up with Canna'eu, even underneath him when he was small enough. He didn't have that anymore, and even the idea of approaching Clanmates felt too much like he was replacing his father figure.
That wasn't what Navira wanted to hear though. And she DID have a point, but also... "Really?" he said, side-eyeing his chief and Clanmate. "You really trust Kira to not bite anybody in her sleep?"

| "Hm." Navira answered. "You're probably right." A part of her was secretly impressed that Rah'ki could give a quip like that off the top of his head...it said that he'd been paying attention to his young clanmates. He was the kind of canna that kept mostly to himself and very obviously stiffened beside her when she suggested getting closer to the rest of the clan, but he still took the time to know the pata's personalities.
"You can have Haka'far then." She said in a finalizing kind of way. "You could even take him out for adventures during the day. Maybe teach him a few things." Her teasing tone was changing, becoming slightly more serious. Here comes the pitch. "He could really use a good mentor like the one you had."
Navira's heart thudded nervously as her words hung in the cold morning air. Usually asking a dog to take an apprentice wasn't such a proposal. Most dogs watched the puppies grow up eagerly, hoping that they might have a chance to mentor their favorite. Rah'ki wasn't that dog. Navira half felt that he might pull away from her and run back to the base when he realized that she was really offering him a ren to care for.
