"AND THOUGH HE IS BUT LITTLE, HE IS FIERCE!"
|
| It was a cold, clear night, and the stars were glistening in a crisp, cloudless sky - For now. For days, the weather had been alternating between heavy clouds and relentless snowfall. Seeing the stars out brought a mixed feeling of comfort and loneliness to the Huli. The scruffy little Rali'canna was sitting in a windowsill in the old freight building, peering out at the twinkling lights in the night sky. He gave a small sigh that momentarily fogged the glass and obscured his view of the Ridna's Pelt.
If someone were to approach him now, he would probably not immediately notice their presence. His mind was a million miles away, focused intensely on the legendary Pelt, the place where dogs came from and then traveled back to when Rumblier claimed them.
If they hadn't lost their Shadowspeaker in the earthquake, he would be pestering them with endless questions right now. He'd be asking them to count the stars and tell him if their missing clanmates had ascended to join them. It would at least give the clan and himself a little bit of closure. Huli put on a brave face and did his best to keep the stragglers going, but he was afraid. He was scared that they would cease searching for the missing Rith'r Flik when they still needed help somewhere on this Earthly plane.
He shook his head hard and gave another deep sigh, still gazing up at the twinkling sky.
"Great Canna Rot'zo..." He muttered quietly. "Has Rumblier delivered our navir to your daughter? We cannot find them."

"Huli..." The small bully appeared to be limping, her expression blank as she neared her clanmate. It was clear he was lost in his mind, his eyes seemed dazed to her as he watched the the heavens. Unfortunately, she was the type of canna who didn't enjoy sharing her feelings. She preferred to engage herself instead of lingering on her emotions.
Her front, left paw was sore to the touch, so she kept it off the ground as she shuffled close and seated herself. The pack has been wandering the territories to discover and claim new land. The constant movement was clearly making itself known with her tender paw pads.
She momentarily peered at the sky and its nebulous appearance. It made her sick, because it made her feel. She cringed internally and dropped her gaze.
"You have to busy yourself. If you continue this path you will lose yourself in the grief." She hoped her words didn't come off as cruel, it almost seemed like she was reminding herself of this.

| Huli turned slowly at the sound of his name, surprised to be met with one of their newest recruits - Hassi'hin. Despite having only known this dog for a short time, he found that he liked her enough. She had involved herself readily in Rith'r Flik life. Her determination to help them succeed would be a great asset to the clan. However, he couldn't help but feel that perhaps she just didn't understand the bond that he and the remaining Ants had with the missing. These were their friends and family, brothers and sisters. Perhaps it was the general in him, or perhaps it was the fact that he instinctively kept tabs on all of his clanmates' well being, though likely both, but the mixed breed's eyes were immediately drawn to Hassi's injured paw as she shuffled closer to sit with him. He didn't object.
"You've hurt yourself." He mused, skirting around her advice for the time being. "You'll need to have Mira look at that." Provided the little Pomeranian didn't pass out at the sight of the bulldog. Huli was suddenly aware once again of how venerable their clan was right now. They'd lost so many skilled canna.
"We haven't sung their goodbye yet." He said finally after a moment of heavy silence, his voice soft but stubborn. "We don't stop looking until Ayou Far Hali is sung. But..." He shook his head and sighed, turning once again to the sky outside the window. "If they are gone, then they haven't been sent back to the Gods with an honorable farewell."

♡⸻𝓱𝓪𝓼𝓼𝓲⸻♡ Hassi's gaze switched to her paw as well when Huli mentioned her wound. She absentmindedly rolled it over so her paw-pads were facing the airspace. The damage was substantial, the flesh clearly scraped off and raw. It was a tender pink color compared to her regular, darker hue. She hummed, a timid smile crossing her wide maw. "It's a tad tinder."
She listened intently to his words, her eyes showing no hint of scrutiny to his statements. Despite her laceration, she slowly appeared to become more languid now that she was finally taking a beat. She rarely sat still nowadays--it was nice on this cool night. She had to keep herself from slumping over on the mohawked brute beside her.
"I come from a different place." She hoped she could explain why she seemed so distant from the grief her clanmates were feeling. "My former pack did not allow time to mourn. Stopping meant weakness, and weakness meant violence." She began to shift uncomfortably, feeling that her voice was so loud in the quiet that surrounded them.
Her eyes were now focused on the sky. "I much prefer your way. It is sad, but it is also beautiful." She whispered.

| While his muzzle was still turned skyward, Huli stole a quick glance at his companion. His silken tail gave the slightest sway at his rear, comforted in the fact that she too was gazing up at the stars with him. It was a reminder that even though he desperately missed his lost clanmates, he was not alone. There were still good dogs by his side.
He was quiet for a long time, listening to Hassi as she spoke of how different her first clan was, of how she admired the more heartfelt customs of Rith'r Flik. When she was done speaking, Huli took a long time to respond. He simply sat beside her, two friends gazing up at the stars, each lost in their own thoughts.
When he finally did speak, he did so in a soft, kind tone, far from the gruff bark that he put on when he was doling out orders as a general.
"For us, losing one of our own is an injury to the whole clan. You've seen the little ants, Rith'r Flik, helping each other carry food or defend their nest? It's what we're named for. We're so much stronger when we're together. When we lost our clanmates...we lost a big part of ourselves." He explained. And then, "I'd be happy to teach you more."
