"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"
|
| The days had passed by quicker than Navira would have ever imagined since the earthquake that took half of her clan away. It was winter when they disappeared. Now everything was green and warm and growing. With or without them, the world was moving on, quickly healing from the mysterious phenomenon that took so many canna. Navira was also healing.
She would always remember her lost clanmates, but the mottled canna found that she wasn't always sniffing for them around every corner anymore. Even she was moving on, focusing now on this bright green world, this forest that she tread through now - Not a town, but still Why'o territory. Everywhere she stepped among the foliage here she found signs of life - Flora and fauna that were more familiar now than they were four blinks ago. The fur of a shu'a against that tree. The remains of a pinecone scattered by a katha'chek here at her feet.
Every day she learned more about this forest and all the secrets that it held. Today was no different. Much to Navira's surprise, the thick undergrowth was becoming more and more sparse. There was a break here in the forest.
Navira crept forward with perked ears and found herself standing on the edge of a beautiful sloping meadow in between the trees. A creek ran through at at its lowest point while yellow and white flowers dotted the landscape. Birds swooped on the creek, catching little bugs. The Why'o Chief stood drinking it all in with her jaws agape. This was the wildest place she had ever seen. Yes, the forest was full and wild and wiped away almost all traces of humanity, but as far as Navira could tell, this meadow had never seen a whiff of Man.
It was in that moment that it clicked, perhaps really and truly for the first time, that this land belonged to canna. It was fresh for the taking. Her heart leaped with excitement and joy. With a great Why'o whoop, Navira suddenly blasted down the hill and into the flowers, skipping and bouncing like a young shu'a. She tore this way and that, racing through tall grasses, leaping over a fallen tree, and splashing through the shallow creek. She laughed. She rolled. She rejoiced once and for all...and in the moment didn't grieve an ounce for the town that had been here months ago. No, this was much better.

Rah'ki had been trying to work on his hunting. It wasn't that he was bad at it! He came back home with just as much prey as everybody else. But it was usually small lout he brought back. Squirrels if he was lucky. Mice, shrews, voles if he wasn't. Just any kind of chek he could.
Today found him wandering the forest, attempting to fix that. He'd already done his duties for the day, a border patrol, and so he allowed himself to ignore the chek he came across in search of his real targets. Rah'ki was looking for any skri he could get his teeth around. He was stalking a bird with glossy black feathers when a loud voice cried out.
The bird startled and flew up, giving a warning call to all lout in the surrounding area, but Rah'ki didn't pay it any mind. Because he knew that voice, and Rah'ki's hackles raised even as he turned toward where the shout had come from. That was Navira! Was she in trouble? Did she need help? Was she hurt? The mental image of an injured Navira made him go faster.
He had to skid to a halt though when he found the meadow. Rah'ki felt his jaw drop in astonishment. He'd never seen anything so... peaceful before. The dappling sunbeams from above, the swaying grass below, and the happily yipping dog running around like a lunatic in it.
Hey, don't judge him. Peace came in many forms. He hadn't seen Navira so happy and carefree since before the Rozo'ama Akoda. Her laughter spilled out in the air like a river breaking free of it's bank, and Rah'ki found an answering laugh spilling from his maw.
Rah'ki chased after her, pulling up beside her and snapping playfully at her before turning on a dime, ripping up dirt with his paws. He tore away from her in the direction of the creek he'd spied, planning on splashing her with water when she caught up with him.
That didn't end up happening though. What happened instead was Rah'ki looking over his shoulder to make sure she was indeed chasing him and tripping over a rock. Being that the creek he'd been heading for was downhill, Rah'ki rolled with it and landed in the creek with a yip and a ker-splash!

| Navira turned quickly when she realized that she wasn't alone, a somewhat surprised look crossing her face for only a moment before her expression once again lit, this time even brighter than it was before. Her heart danced happily in her chest when she realized that the laugh had come from her very own Rahki'navir - A clanmate that she had thought at one point would never smile again.
"Rahki!" She called out joyfully, slapping her paws down among the flowers in a play bow. "Come on!"
And then she turned and ran, and her heart leaped again when she realized that he had accepted her invitation and was now running at her side. She veered into him, intending to shove him over with her shoulder, but instead receive a light nip that caught her entirely off guard. She yipped in surprise and stumbled away, giving Rahki a head start as he raced off in the direction of the creek.
The joyful absurdity of two adult dogs having the zoomies in a meadow too beautiful to be real struck her briefly. ..Perhaps she'd actually died. Was this what it was like to go back to Ridna'kah? To be here for all eternity on the Pelt - Two fireflies dancing together in a meadow? That didn't sound so bad.
With a laugh, she tore away after her friend, intending to call out a, "wait for me!" but it never came. Before she could speak, Rahki was disappearing nose over tail down a nearby hill - Right into the creek below. Navira stifled a giggle as she caught up to his tumbled form. As she made her way down the grassy slope MUCH more carefully than he had, she teased,
"Ah'mir would be impressed with a dive like that." She stepped into the creek beside her clanmate's fallen body and bent her head, nosing his shoulder - Ready to help him to his paws if need be. "But if you decide to become a swimming canna, I can't guarantee a free pass to Navira's Meadow anymore." She paused, made a thinking face, and then shook her head. "Hm. Nope, not the right name for it. Any ideas?"

Rah'ki stayed where he'd fallen, seeing no point in getting up. Luckily the creek was shallow enough that he had just enough room to breath through his nose. Unluckily, he was drowning anyway. Drowning in his embarrassment.
Navira was nice enough to withhold a giggle, but that didn't stop her eyes from gleaming with hidden laughter at his expense. He huffed at her tease of the Ah'mir being impressed with the dive before raising his head fully above the water to answer back. "We'll have to bring a patrol and dig up any stones to make sure there's nothing to harm the pups and apprentices before bringing them down here. Just so something like that doesn't happen to them."
At her prodding, Rah'ki heaved himself to his paws with a grunt. Water streamed off of his form and he shook himself off, sending droplets spraying into the air everywhere. He looked around at the meadow, the peace and laughter and playfulness it had brought about, and suggested, "Ridnah'kah's Paradise? For the old stories of her playful prancing bringing about fields and trees and shrubs."
He shrugged, shoulders raising up and down. "Just a suggestion. For the record though I like Navira's Meadow. Rot'zo knows you deserve SOMETHING named after you, after the way you picked the Clan up in it's darkest hour."

| "Ridnah'kah's Meadow." Navira mused, turning the name over carefully on her tongue. "I kind of like it." But then she tilted her head again at Rah'ki with a teasing smirk on her muzzle. "If Ridnah'kah made this meadow for us, you know she put that stone there to trip you. She probably thought it was really funny. Do you really want to dig up all of her future pranks before they have a chance to happen?"
"Rot'zo knows you deserve SOMETHING named after you, after the way you picked the Clan up in it's darkest hour."
Navira unconsciously pulled a sheepish, embarrassed face. Something about his statement made her fur prickle. It wasn't something that she felt like she deserved praise for. It had just kind of...happened. If another dog had stepped up before her when everyone was wandering around lost, she'd have happily followed their lead.
"Okay, fine. This place can be Ridnah'kah's Meadow, and we can start calling the Why'os Navira Clan instead." She tried to joke. But then there was a deep pause, and she said in an uncharacteristically shy mumble, peering down at the water running around Rah'ki's paws instead of meeting his eyes, "But thank you."

Rah'ki felt a warm glow of pleasure that she liked his idea. What he DIDN'T like was the teasing smirk, and Rah'ki narrowed his eyes at her in suspicion. He huffed at her idea of that stone being Ridnah'kah's prank. "I'd rather ruin Ridnah'kah's pranks than have a brained cadet on our paws. Imagine Tavi's rage if we ended up having to drag her pups home by their scruff because they're too dizzy to walk on their own."
He gave an exaggerated shudder at the idea. Tavi was terrifying on a good day. If her children were hurt on their watch, Rah'ki wasn't entirely certain he'd survive the encounter with his dignity intact. 'Sharp tongue' indeed... He missed the face Navira made about his naming something after her, and chuckled about her joke of renaming the Clan. "I think Nahara would have something to say about renaming the Clan after you. Your sister is, uh... not very nice." There. Good, diplomatic way of saying Nahara was intense.
Navira wasn't looking at him when she thanked him. And it was the quietest he'd ever heard her. "You're welcome. It's true though. Maybe the town? Navira'udu. Navira's Heart. Has a nice ring to it. I'll bring it up with the others when we get back. You have no choice in the matter now." he teased with a soft nudge.
Then he gave a harder nudge, more of a shove, to try and knock her into the water. He didn't stick around to see if she stumbled into the creek and instead darted back up the hill. "Catch me if you can, Li'Navira!"

| Okay, that's fair." Navira said, turning back to Rah'ki with a look of mock seriousness that quickly turned into a smile again. "But can you imagine Tavi'elu standing on the roof shouting at the Gods instead of you and me?"
The chief then pulled a "disgusted" face at the mention of Nahara, imagining the fights that would happen if anyone even tried to mention such a change. She opened her jaws to answer Rah'ki, intending to quip back that she liked him better with his tongue not ripped from his mouth by her sister - But Rah'ki cut her off with a few good nudges that sent Navira stumbling around in the water in an attempt to maintain her footing. She ended up landing on her rump with a great splash.
"Hey!" She barked back, standing and tearing off up the hill after her friend, following him back into the meadow. "That's cheating!" He had a head start, but she was competitive - A purebred Why'o born and trained to race against her clanmates. It wasn't long before she was right on his white-tipped tail, growling in pretend indignance.
She lunged for Rah'ki's haunches, intending to shove him off balance if she could. And then she'd sit on him. That would show him. She was the chief! Nobody pushed the chief into a creek. And she'd be sure to tell him all about it once she caught him. Her thoughts were running as fast as she was, going back to childish puppy brain now. Chasing this canna around the meadow made her feel and act like a ren. Maybe sitting on him wasn't the most grown-up thing to...but she didn't really care.
