For months now Jarri had done her level best to find other canna to befriend. She tried the big dogs, the little dogs, the young dogs, the old dogs, all of which scorned her and pushed her away. Truthfully, it made her very sad. She was trying to hard to be a good friend, a nice pup someone would want to hang out with! Yet all the rogues seemed to push her away and see her as a burden. Many nights she cried alone in the abandoned house where she had set up camp. Why didn't anyone want to be her friend? Was there something on her face? She just couldn't figure it out!
In light of that, the only thing to do was keep trying. Someone out there would be her friend, she just had to find them! As heavy grey clouds covered the sky, the dark pup slid out of the door to put herself back out into the world once more. Her house was quite close to the collapsed shelter, and every day she moved through a few different streets getting further and further away. Back when she first moved in she was far too scared to even leave those four walls. Now that she was much more mature and strong, she was confident she could make her way back by the end of the day. The new streets were quite pretty, and Jarri'hin found herself smiling along as she appreciated the abandoned architecture. "Helloooooo?" She called out occasionally, her small voice echoing between the empty buildings. That too had scared her at first, hearing the distant repeated howls until she realised that it was her own fault. Now she strutted forwards with gusto! Someone was going to be her friend today!!

"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"
|
| Navira padded down the middle of a long abandoned road alone, with her nose pressed firmly to the ground. She was moving at a decent pace, tail raised high and waving over her head. The chief was just departing Why'o base to perform a sweep of the territory. Under normal circumstances, she might have one or two dogs flanking her. As luck would have it though, Why'os were spread incredibly thin these days. Many had to resort to patrolling or hunting entirely on their own to make up for the great losses they had faced.
Suddenly, Navira stopped and tilted her head towards the desolate town stretched out in front of her. There was a voice bouncing between the empty buildings - One that clearly did not belong to the usual assortment of fli that yapped in the morning. No, this one was clearly canna.
The chief felt her hackles rising from nape to tail. The call didn't have the distinct dialect that made up a Why'o howl. It was an intruder! It was time to let the stranger know that they were invading someone's land.
Navira threw back her head and belted her best Why'o howl, a sound that reverberated impressively through the surrounding man-made walls. To an untrained ear, it probably sounded like there was a pack of canna throwing off warning calls instead of just one. Even alone though, any nearby Why'o would surely hear this and be here soon to back her up. If that stranger knew what was good for them, they'd be leaving as soon as the call reached their ears.

The little pup's ears bounced merrily as she trotted down the abandoned street. The cars left on the side of the street had never moved in Jarri's lifetime, so she was happy to explore beneath them without the fear of danger that someone older may have had. The astringent scent of gasoline lying idle in the tank was strange and not particularly pleasant, but hey, at least she knew about it now! The stout pup hummed a little song along to herself as she made her way downtown, still calling out 'hello's every once in a while.
The howls of what must be at least five dogs erupted from all around her. Her tail tucked under her body faster than lightning and floppy ears slammed back onto her skull. Tears pricked at her eyes as fear sent her wobbling. "Oh geez uhm," she whimpered, her lips quivering as her head swung around trying to see who was there, "I'm so sorry! I'll go, I'm sorry!!" With the second apology, big sobs cracked her voice as she turned around and started to scuttle back the way she came. Hopefully, she hadn't made them too mad and they wouldn't come after her. Some dogs were really really mean and chased her all the way back to the house! She had been so hopeful about today, why wouldn't anyone just be her friend? Snivelling tears continued to fall as tiny legs bounced as quickly as they could across the tarmac. Maybe tomorrow would be better, but today definitely was going to be spent curled into the soft blankets that were the best substitute of a friend she found so far.

| As she howled, she ran full pelt, intending to have her threatening whoops close in on the intruder, terrifying them into thinking that they were being chased down by the pack. It was an effective strategy and one that was proven to work at times against even the most determined of thieves. It didn't cross the grey chief's mind that the intruder might have been an oblivious little ren until she covered a hill and saw a tiny, dark furred pup scampering down the road in terror.
"Aya, Navira!" She gritted her teeth and cursed herself for being so impulsive and then tore off in pursuit of the young "invader." She didn't really even need the Why'o gift of speed here...the ren had the shortest little legs that Navira had ever seen, perhaps even shorter than some of those Ant Clanners that she'd been patrolling alongside. It wouldn't occur to her until later that this was because she'd never yet encountered a Rith'r Flik so young.
"Stop!" She barked a bit too harshly. And then she was caught up and running alongside the little one. The bigger dog veered and threw out a paw, intending to knock the terrified pup off of her feet if her aim was true. It wasn't the most gentle approach by any means, but she had to fix what she'd started...even if it meant pushing a kid over in the street.

Heaving sniffles did nothing to mask the sound of thudding pawsteps coming up behind her fast. Her tiny strides were nothing compared to the full-speed sprint of the angry monster about to give her the scolding of a lifetime for intruding on their territory. They must be really really mad! Usually, when rogues saw her running away they just accepted that she had learned her lesson. This was one of the few times that an adult had actually chased her and they were definitely going to give her a good reason to never come back.
"Stop!" the loud bark of the she-dog only scared little Jarri more. The pawsteps were practically on top of her now! The tiny ren spared just a moment to look up and see the giant merle paws slamming down next to her. Then, the next thing she knew, she was skidding a short distance across the road. Her eyes squeezed shut subconsciously, and when she opened them again she found the world turned on its side. Her shoulder stung as she finally registered past the shock of being kicked that it had a small scrape. "Owie..." she whimpered out, bottom lip already starting to quiver. The whole ordeal stopped her crying for just a moment, before fat tears began streaming down her cheeks even more as she bawled openly. She couldn't even outrun this not-friend, and now her shoulder hurt and she was kicked and this whole day was the worst one ever in her whole life!!

| Her aim hit home. Kind of. Her intention had been to trip the little dog up...instead her paw slammed right into the little one's body, sending her skidding out into the street. Navira immediately stopped and whipped around to catch up to the dark furred youngster, once again mentally cursing herself.
"Hey!" Navira barked, trotting quickly over to the puppy's side. She bent down, hoping to catch her eye and show that she actually wasn't terrifying. Even though she'd just shoved her right over in the road. The whole thing couldn't have been much worse, except she realized, upon closer inspection, that the little intruder was now crying.
"Hey," She said in a somewhat gentler tone. "Sorry about that. I couldn't get ya to stop! Are you alright? You come here all by yourself?"
Her first inclination would have been to think that this was a territory invasion, but now that she had had a closer look at the smaller dog, her mind started saying Rozo'ama Akoda. A puppy separated from its clan by the storm that shook the mountains. It was all too common even months later to find a dog wandering aimlessly, searching for a family that would never return.

"Hey!" The booming voice rang out, getting closer and closer to the quivering lump, "Hey. Sorry about that. I couldn't get ya to stop! Are you alright? You come here all by yourself?" the voice questioned again, seeming a lot softer than her paw had been. Jarri sniffled for a minute, wide eyes looking over the other canna to see if she truly wasn't going to attack her. The last rogue that was this close had practically spit on her and gave her her canna name.
"Um, yeah I uhm," She schnuffed heavily, her tan snout swinging in the direction of her house, "I live over there in a house but I've been all alone for months and I just want to make friends but everyone I talk to sends me away or is mean to me and now I tripped and my shoulder hurts a little bit and I just want to be friends with someone or something and I thought going for a walk would be a good way to make friends but if you don't want to be friends then that's okay I'll get away from your territory really fast!" Jarri sniffled even more, her giant run-on sentence punctuated more by her sniffs and hiccups than actual grammar. Wet eyes squeezed shut, wringing the last tears out before she looked towards the stranger again, hope clear in her face behind the shock and sadness of being hurt and alone.

| Navira blinked hard. That was a lot of information to take in. Firstly, she wondered how this little canna had lived for so long right under their noses without being noticed. Should she have sent out more patrols in this direction? Ah, yes, the patrols. That was it. Being stretched so thin did them no favors at all and this only served to shed light on that unfortunate fact.
Second, this little one obviously knew nothing about territories our boundaries. She was waltzing around on someone else's land looking for friends? She must have been a pet. How in the world had she survived for so long on her own?
Navira sighed and shoved her nose into the little dog's shoulder to give it a good sniff as she chattered on, dropping all semblance of boundaries now. The pup wasn't a threat - There was no point in hanging back if she needed a healer for her injuries. Navira winced at the thought of bringing a broken pup back to Udu'e and explaining that it had all been her fault.
"What's your name, ren?" Navira said. "Mine is Li'Navira'e hu'grair. You can call me Li'Navira. Did you live with grimm before Rozo'ama Akoda?" Was the pup even old enough to remember a human family? No matter, she'd already decided that the tiny scrap wouldn't be sent back to her empty house today. Nope, she was coming home with Navira...at least until she figured out where she belonged.

Finally, her tears started to slow down. The comforting press of this stranger gave her a sense of hope that maybe, really maybe, she wanted to be friends. "My name's Jarri'hin. I think. At least it's the only name I know. It's uhm nice to meet you Li'Navira," she whimpered out, big brown eyes looking up towards the larger dog, "I didn't live with the grimm, only in their house I think. I was crying on top of the big rocks for a while, and then uhm it got dark and I got really scared and then I walked for a little while and then I found a house and it had a little door and a big bag of these pellets but they tasted kinda okay and I've been walking around looking for friends but no one wants to be my friend except maybe you? Do you want to be my friend?" She peered up towards her, the last of her tears finally falling without any reinforcements to back them up. Was this really what she had been looking for this whole time? All it took was being kicked a little bit?

| The speckled chief's expression softened as Jarri tearfully explained herself. Yep, this was an earthquake pup alright. They Why'os had taken in a few of these waifs already - albeit older ones. Surely no one would bat an eye when the chief came home with another one in tow. It was just the nature of Rozo'ama Akoda.
"Yeah." Navira gave the small canna a little half-smile, tilting her head in a friendly way. She bent again to nudge the puppy onto her paws, this time a lot more gently than the first rough shove that had toppled her into the street.
"Yeah, I'll be your friend. Nice to meet you too, Jarri. You know what? I think that name suits you. Hey! I've got a pretty good idea. Since we're friends now, why don't you come back to my pell'galu with me? My clan should be bringin' home all kinds of good lout today...I think we've got enough to share. What'dya say?"
She nodded back towards Why'o's base with a grin, wagging her feathered tail invitingly as she spoke. Getting some real food into this ren would be a good first step towards drying up those tears once and for all, she was sure of it. Besides, how much trouble could it be to bring one little pup back to base?

This Li'Navira turned out to be a lot nicer than what she seemed. Maybe if she had stayed around to talk with the other canna that had been so mean to her before, they would have turned out to be nice too? She could have had a lot of friends if only she had kept trying to talk for a little longer! "Yeah, I'll be your friend. Nice to meet you too, Jarri. You know what? I think that name suits you. Hey! I've got a pretty good idea. Since we're friends now, why don't you come back to my pell'galu with me? The tears that streaked down her face now seemed like a distant past as a smile so bright it could rival the sun beamed from Jarri's face. Friends, and a home, and a clan!! Li'Navira was the kindest, nicest, bestest canna ever! "Really really?!" she squeaked out, her voice wobbling both from residual spasms of her previous sadness and from the sheer force at which her tail was wagging behind her, "Thank you so so much! I can't wait to be friends with you and with your clan and with everyone there and to see everything and, oh geez thank you so much for being so nice, I really shouldn't have been so scared when you're so nice and now you're my friend so I don't have to be scared at all!" The young pup babbled on a mile a minute, small legs already working to carry her towards the direction Li'Navira had pointed. All her hard work finally paid off! She knew she could do it!

| "Really really." Navira promised. She set off at a slow trot but watched with amusement as the Jarri chattered like a tiny, bubbly little bird. Alright, this little dog was pretty cute.
"You're gonna love it." The chief said, carrying on friendly conversation with another gentle smile. "And everyone's gonna love you! I'll tell you all about Why'o Clan on the way back home. How 'bout you tell me a little about yourself too?"
And as the two new friends, no...clanmates, trotted off back to Why'o's pell'galu, side-by-side, the tearful drama of their initial meeting seemed all but forgotten. They were making strides in the right direction..and Navira just knew that she'd made the right choice.
