"ARE YOU SURE THIS WATER'S SANITARY? IT LOOKS QUESTIONABLE TO ME!"
|
| "Er...I think we should put it into this pile." Lendri said awkwardly, casting a sideways glance at his...companion? as they sorted herbs together. Kind of. He wasn't really sure if "together" was the right word, but their mentors had asked them to try out a teamwork task today and so...here they were, sitting next to one another in the healers' storeroom with various piles of leaves spread out in front of them.
If it were anyone else, he might not have felt so awkward. Or even any other time! Udu'e and Likal had picked the worst day ever to pair Lendri and Kitchi-Kitchi together like this. Their challenge had come only a day after Navira's big story...a day when Haka'far and what seemed like everyone else had been pretty rude to Kitchi. Lendri winced at the very thought. Maybe he should have apologized to her? After all, Haka was only trying to defend his brother.
He opened his mouth to do so, hoping to break the tense silence between himself and the other pup...and instead blurted out something completely different. Oops.
"Uh...Kitchi, can I ask you a question?"

The mottled coated pup sat quietly as she tended to her task. Sorting herbs. Udu'e and Likal had assigned both her and the ibizan pup, Lendri, to sort through the leaves together to learn... something. Working as a team? She wasn't sure exactly how this would constitute as a team building exercise but she wasn't one to argue with her mentor and shadowspeaker of the clan, Udu'e. No, the collie was someone that Kitchi-Kitchi would always be respectful towards. She was probably the only canna that deserved that much from the pup, though.
Her fur stood on end as she sat and tried to focus on her task. It seemed more difficult than it should have been just from her companion's mere presence. 'Durr, I think we should put it in this pile,' she mocked back at him in her head. She wasn't talking to him. After the way he had gotten all of the other pups to turn on her last night she didn't think she'd ever speak to him again, ever! Or, maybe that's what he had wanted... In that case, she would torment him to no end and never shut up! Or, would he prefer that? The whole situation turning over in her mind was starting to cause her brain to ache which led to the back of her head itching. Reaching a back leg behind her she scratched at the annoyance as the thoughts continued to mull about in her head.
When Lendri turned to ask her a question about asking her a question she immediately stopped her itching and turned her head to face him. "WHAT?!" she snapped back, her small pointed teeth on full display as she nearly shouted the word. Her muzzle did not hold a snarl for more than a moment, though a sneer remained on her face as she dramatically looked the ibizan up and down. Her eye movements were clear on her face with the strange speckled irises she had been "gifted with" at birth.
The silence lingered for only a moment before she shrugged her shoulders, parted her lips, and gave the male a stupid, mocking look as if to say "What, you ibo?" without actually speaking the words. Her tail gave two solid thumps behind her in annoyance. What was his problem?!

"ARE YOU SURE THIS WATER'S SANITARY? IT LOOKS QUESTIONABLE TO ME!"

| Kitchi's biting response was...kind of expected, but Lendri still flinched as if an aye-aye had just stung his backside. There was a deep, lengthy bout of silence as the two pups stared wide-eyed at one another, one clearly contemplating murder and the other frowning so hard that the corners of his down-turned mouth might soon touch his toes. Why was she so scary?! She'd probably bite him if he asked.
Still, the ibizan mix held her gaze without a word, his mind buzzing so loudly that she might even be able to hear it. He knew what he wanted to ask her. He just wasn't sure how to ask. Or if she'd be really mad at him if he did. Curiosity won out in the end, as it usually did with Lendri, and the question was finally released...and fear for his life was pushed momentarily to the side.
"What was your name before you were made ele'cannara?" He blurted. "You couldn't have been born Kitchi-Kitchi, right? Because it's plants that make you scratch! And when you were little...um...you...wouldn't have been around any plants yet." The black and white pup finished his statement off quickly, realizing that he might have said a bit too much.
He turned his nose back to the pile of herbs in front of his paws and pretended to study it closely, avoiding what he was sure would be a look of pure murder from the little collie.

Pure, unadulterated want for murder shone through the dappled eyes. Merle fur covered her furrowed brow at the ibizan's inquiry. The absolute audacity! Added to the offensive question was the rude way he had asked the question and immediately dropped his gaze back down to the herbs in front of him. Was he dropped on his head as a ren? Is that why his posture was at a seemingly constant wilt? Her tail thumped once more in annoyance as she secretly considered her answer behind her vivid glare that could have burnt a hole right through the side of her companion's white head.
"Don't you know it's rude to ask a canna their past name?" she said through a sneer, a small growl pulling at the edge of each word. Maybe it wasn't actually rude, but any chance to make Lendri feel like an ibo was a chance Kitchi was willing to take.
She resisted the urge to scratch at her shoulder as it was beginning to drive her mad. The male cadet had made her very self conscious of her scratching in this particular moment. No, she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of being right about her itching. She would hold back. She could control it... maybe.
With a girlish "hmph," and a shrug of her shoulders she turned back towards their task at hand. Pushing a small section of dandelion leaves across the floor into their own pile away from the flowers she gave Lendri a small glance from the corner of her eye, peeking briefly over her shoulder before speaking as if she were talking to herself. "Aridali'thi," she stated, the name cut off by her own short temper. With a flick of the ear and a quick glance back she secretly questioned his opinion on it through her body language in lieu of words.
Did he like it? Did he think it was stupid? Was it a fitting name? Did he simply not care and was just trying to make conversation? Why was he so stupid? And why did he even bother to ask in the first place?
In any case, most anything seemed better than Kitchi-Kitchi.

"Sorry." Lendri muttered quietly without looking up from the pile of leaves that he was picking at. His ears flopped over limply in Kitchi's direction, having lost all hold of themselves in the wake of this uncomfortable scolding. He had never heard that before. Most dogs were happy to share with him that they'd gotten a better name. It was something to brag about. There was no doubt though that Kitchi was different from any canna that he'd ever met.
But then the snappy healer said something that surprised him enough that his uncooperative ears flew straight up...and then sank back down slowly to point the other way. He turned to study Kitchi inquisitively and was relieved to find that she seemed to be pretty wrapped up in her own work right now.
Aridali'thi.
It did suit her...at least, it did when she wasn't giving showing Lendri her fangs or glaring at him like she wanted to abandon him in the woods. She had really pretty spots that went all the way into her eyes, and her ears were really good at standing up straight! They never fell over.
Lendri, for once, was quiet, contemplating this new development. Until he wasn't. He couldn't hold his tongue forever, after all.
"Your mom and dad must have really loved you." He said. "They thought you were beautiful!" And then he smiled at Kitchi with a gigantic, pleasant grin, feathery tail wagging against the concrete floor at his rear. It would have never occurred to him that he might have just insinuated that Kitchi-Kitchi had a face only her mother could love.

Chill out, whatcha yelling for? if you could only let it be, you will see The sentiment behind Lendri's statement was immediately lost with his inflection towards the word "you." While Kitchi had found the words almost endearing at first she became hung up on that small inclination in his tone. The minor pull in the corner of her lips into the soft beginnings of an upward smile was immediately dropped as she swung her face around to meet his.
"And what's that supposed to mean?!" she said with a snarl. The female cadet found herself on her feet - her head lowered, her stance wide, and the fur along her back standing up on end. Her feathered tail stood straight out as the beginnings of a snarl started to take hold across her muzzle before she immediately dropped it. Lifting her head and returning to a more regal and appropriate posture she stood over him, glaring down at his wilted frame. The only anger that remained flared behind her eyes. It was an anger at both his words and of her own lack of self control. He had gotten to her and that was unacceptable. What if Udu'e had seen her just now? No. It was unacceptable of her to lash out this way. But why did Lendri have to be so absolutely stupid?!
She let out a huff at him before turning and moving to the far side of the room to continue with her tasks in as much solitude as would be allowed between them. As she trotted she couldn't help but let out a snide comment, "At least my mother didn't name me Lendri. My mother would have seen the black spots and came up with something else."
Finding a new place to sit, she began sorting out more of the herbs. These ones were a bit more tricky as she hadn't had much experience in their fresher forms. Kitchi had mostly seen dried herbs, but now that spring was in full bloom and they were even heading into summer months it was opening up a whole new world of plants for the two cadets to discover and learn.
Still, even trying to focus on the task at hand, Kitchi found it difficult to push the intrusive thoughts aside. Unable to let the whole situation go and move on she turned and called back over her shoulder, "Your mother should have named you Rumblier'kathatha, considering you always look like a dying plant!" That would show him! But still, it didn't leave the cadet feeling any better about herself. i act | "i talk" | 'i think' |

The tiniest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of Kitchi's mouth did not go unnoticed by the black and white pup. Lendri's own grin grew triumphantly and he sat up a little straighter. He couldn't stop his tail from swishing hugely with excitement, because he, Lendri, had finally done something right. He had for once made Kitchi smile and it didn't even look like the kind of smile she had when she was faking it in front of the grown-ups.
And then she turned quickly to look at him and - Wait, what? She was furious! Lendri's own jaw dropped in shock and he found himself gaping like a parched fish. His eyes widened to twice their normal size. Spotted ears flapped back flat against his head, almost disappearing completely in his instinctive bid to make himself invisible.
Despite being close to the same height, Lendri suddenly seemed a whole lot smaller than the other pup. Kitchi-Kitchi stood tall and angry overtop him, but he shrunk down to the floor like a scolded ren. The ibizan pup scooted a few clumsy steps backwards for good measure, keeping his giant eyes locked on Kitchi's angry ones. You know, just in case she decided to bean him over the top of the head.
"I-I-" He stammered, too completely tongue tied to finish his own sentence. What in the world had happened?! Everything had been going so well for a minute there! And now she was mad at him again. He couldn't do anything right!
The visual assault lasted for only a few moments before Kitchi turned away, but Lendri remained flattened to the floor long after she'd turned her back on him. He lay there cuddling the cold concrete, still wilting. Still trying to pick his own jaw up off the floor, putting most of his focus now into Kitchi's comment about his name. Okay. Yes. He didn't have the best name either. Mother had basically just named him "white." Not too creative. Would Kitchi want him to agree with her? Maybe not right now.
In time, he finally gathered up the courage to stand and creep quietly back to his own little pile of herbs, but for once he couldn't bring himself to study it at all. Instead, he watched the back of Kitchi's speckled head as she sat hunched over her own work on the other side of the room. Somehow even the back of her head looked really mad. How did she do that?
The silence that followed was so deafening that, when Kitchi finally spoke up, Lendri flinched again. He didn't say anything though. At least, not right away. Oh no, he knew better than that. If he wanted to fix this, he'd have to think really hard about the next thing out of his mouth.
When he finally did answer her eons later, his words were barely more than an awkward mumble.
"How about Li'ibo E' ran'sar?"

Chill out, whatcha yelling for? if you could only let it be, you will see Complete and utter silence fell between the two cadets for what felt like hours. Kitchi's fur along her spine stood on end as she remained acutely aware of the ibizan behind her. How did he always manage to get under her skin the way that he did? It was probably the most infuriating thing about him. No, wait. That honor befell everything about him.
The collie mix began to list off the things in her head. First he had the audacity to keep his family through the rozo'ama akoda, then he took her mentor, then he got a different mentor - was Udu'e not good enough for him? - he had the gall to get himself hurt and require her assistance, his siblings were menaces towards her, and he... well he... he was Lendri! The fact that nothing in her short list of reasons to harbor such a distaste towards the young male was in any way his fault was completely ignored. Clearly he was the reason for all of her problems - or perhaps she was projecting all of her problems onto him... Nah.
A mottled ear twitched atop her head at the grating sound of his pathetic voice. Li'ibo E' ran'sar? She drew in a sharp breath at his comment. Her body quivered slightly as she attempted to hold back her feelings on his suggestion. From the outside it may have appeared she was vibrating with rage, yet internally she struggled to keep herself from laughing. Squeezing her eyes shut, she couldn't help but let out a loud "Pfffft," sound before redirecting herself into scratching the back of her head.
Turning her head to face him, her glare held a mixture of both her base point annoyance with the slightest hint of amusement. "Well, at least you've got one thing right." i act | "i speak" | 'i think' |

There were an agonizing few moments where Lendri was sure that he had only made her angrier. Kitchi's little gasp wasn't lost to his wilted ears, but the sound was mistaken for frustration rather than amusement. The ibizan lowered his head, crestfallen that his comment hadn't worked at all. Yet, he still dared a peek in Kitchi's direction and was surprised to find that her shoulders were shaking with...laughter? No. It couldn't be. No of course not, she was furious with him! She was always furious with him.
But then she snorted and turned to look at him and he found himself smiling once again, because there was something more than sheer annoyance glimmering in her multi-colored eyes. She thought it was funny. It had worked. Against his will, Lendri's tail began to wag.
The warm feeling of success was overwhelming. So much that it gave the owi cadet an uncharacteristic surge of bravery that led him to keep going, to risk gambling the small amount of progress that he had made on a hunch....Appealing to Kitchi's sense of pride to make her think he wasn't completely awful. Or at the very least to show her that he was really sorry.
He stretched out one white paw and patted the floor at his side, inviting her back over to sit next to him again.
"I'm bad at being right. I could really use your help with some of these tougher plants...if you wanted to come back over here, you could. "
