Navira was exhausted...and she was trying not to let it show. She'd spent much of the night out with Rah'ki in the meadow and it had been wonderful, but now she was paying the price with stone-heavy eyelids and a yawn creeping up behind every order that she gave this morning. The mottled canna was standing in the middle of the big mess hall, waiting for her clanmates to finish their breakfast so that she could send them out on their daily jobs. It was a chore in itself today.
"Oh, I'm sorry." She apologized absentmindedly to a dog who had just been assigned to both the river border and the forest hunting party at the same time. "Hey, how about you pick this morning, huh?" She offered them with a smile. "Border or hunting, go do whatever you were most looking forward to!" And then, as they turned away, giving her a confused look as they left, she groaned, shook her head, and slapped a paw over her speckled muzzle. Morning light was barely creeping in through the big windows and she already needed a nap!

Nahara was often awake before the sun illuminated the prison’s rooms. It was usually the only peace she got; she reveled in those few minutes without an excited symphony of howls, yips and barks. She had to tread carefully when slinking away from the dog pile; one stray tail stepped on and she lost any chance of early morning respite. When her clanmates did stir, they usually found her sitting beneath one small, barred window, face towards the rising sun and a cold shoulder turned towards them.
Breakfast was what she needed to prepare for. A loud mess hall, filthy and filled with juvenile antics. Nahara’s ears pinned back involuntarily when she entered last and walked along the wall to avoid any flying spit or chewed up pieces of food. After pulling her pick of prey, Nahara weaved between the other dogs and found a suitable spot to dig in. She ripped meat from bone expertly and neatly; now was her chance to catch up on the latest happenings, and wouldn’t you know it? Her sister’s name was bouncing around the Why’os mess hall.
Ears alert and tail swaying, betraying her interest in the news, Nahara pieced together a narrative of the evening before. She polished off the last of her meal, muttered an “excuse me” after belching and started to make her way out of the noisy crowd. Her stare swept across the cafeteria and located the mottled pelt of her sister. There was no missing the exhausted slump in Navira’s shoulders and as Nahara approached, she caught more signs that confirmed rumors of a late night rendezvous - droopy eyelids, mixing up patrols.
Nahara sat down beside her chief; side-eyeing her littermate, Nahara snapped, “I can’t believe you’re sneaking out at night like a rebellious ele’cannara.”

Navira was aware of a dog slipping in close and sitting down beside her, but she was both too busy and too tired to immediately recognize the newcomer as her own sister for a moment. When she did finally turn to see which canna was awaiting orders, recognition flooded her features. She opened her jaws to greet her sour-faced sibling, but before she could speak, Nahara was already on the rampage.
Navira's jaws snapped shut with an audible click. Brows shot up, speckled ears stood tall...and for a moment she may as well have been the ele'cannara that Nahara was accusing her of being, caught with red paws and shocked that it had happened so quickly.
A thousand different questions and comebacks whirled around in Navira's head, coming out at times in broken fragments before she finally found her voice.
"What? How did you-I mean. Well. I didn't sneak out." The grey-speckled canna scoffed indignantly. Okay, that was only a half-truth. "I took a night walk. And then I came back. I'm trying to work here!" She flustered, giving her sibling a childish glare. She shook out her fur to relieve the uncomfortable prickling against her skin. Most of the time Navira had a better comeback for Nahara's snarky criticisms. Why did this one have her all bothered?
"How did you know what I was doing, anyway?" She grumped. "Ya nosy spy."

Nahara boasted a skill other Why’os couldn’t dream of possessing - catching their chief off guard. Nahara’s alert, pricked ears picked up the sound of Navira’s brain squealing like a suddenly braking car. She was desperately trying to spit out a solid defense, efforts Nahara thwarted with a suspicious squint in her direction.
“Oh, please, Navira,” Nahara barked, “you snuck out. Wiggled right out from underneath everybody and prayed you didn’t accidentally kick someone’s nose.” She let Navira babble on and throw up excuses before cutting her off with a disbelieving and patronizing, “uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.”
“Working? Not from where I’m standing,” Nahara shot back. She gestured to the last few canna her sister barked orders at, wearing lost expressions and casting sidelong glances at their li’canna. “You’re letting them run blind because you’re too sleepy to plan out patrols. Your orders are a jumbled mess.”
How did she know? Nahara couldn’t hold back a huff of unamused laughter. Navira knew better than to assume Why’os kept secrets. “It spread like ka’rith’r,” she growled, locking eyes with her sister and taking on a stiffer tone, “a chief and her silly crush shouldn’t be the subject of gossip and rumors.” It was the first vague mention of who else was out late, and by Nahara’s inflection, she definitely disapproved. kagney@adox

Navira followed her sister's gaze to the confused canna that she'd just sent away for the day. She found her ears folding back flat against her head as Nahara went on to pick apart the slip-up she'd made earlier when giving orders. She huffed quietly and made a big show of rolling her eyes. Okay, so that was one mistake. She'd done alright with everyone else.
She was pretty well used to Nahara's "critique" at this point. It wasn't exactly a secret that Navira's littermate didn't agree with any of her leadership choices. But that last comment struck a nerve that startled even Navira herself. Rah'ki didn't need to become Nahara's next target.
Navira whipped back around to face her sister, an impatient growl edging her voice as she snapped, "Yeah, you're right. That shouldn't be clan gossip. I went out with a friend, so what? The whole world didn't explode when I was gone. Everyone's still here!" She raised her voice on the last sentence and gestured dramatically with a dark speckled paw at a crowd of dogs milling about nearby...then dropped it quickly when a few of them gave her a startled look.
And then there was a small, awkward pause as she turned away, squinted hard across the mess hall at the other canna padding through the exit before she muttered a half-hearted defense of her feelings for Rah'ki. "He's not a crush."

Nahara blinked back, unimpressed, when her sister whirled around to face her. She said nothing while Navira defended herself and her moonlit affair, only pinning her ears back to show she didn’t appreciate the sudden rise in volume and attention drawn to their conversation. Nahara glanced over to the confused group of canna and rolled her eyes as if their chief’s outburst was nothing more than a puppy’s tantrum and she was a saint for dealing with it.
“Our chief disappears in the middle of the night, comes back sleepless and sloppy and nobody should say a word about it?” Nahara scoffed, “sure, Navira.” She let her snide comments hang in the air until her sister muttered something. “Infatuation,” Nahara supplied instead, condescending and dismissive, “it’ll pass and you’ll be embarrassed you wasted your time and precious energy.”
Nahara turned to survey the remaining canna in the mess hall. Her head tilted, one ear flopping over, at the sight of mentors milling about aimlessly and talking amongst themselves. “Everyone’s here,” she hummed, an undeniably smug sound, “where’s your unruly band of cadets, Li’Navira?” kagney@adox

The chief sat down hard and supplied her sister with a glare for the ages, tall ears still pinned back flat against her head - A clear sign that Nahara was grating on her nerves. An infatuation! Puh! Who did Nahara think she was, talking to her chief like this? It was downright insulting.
To top it all off, Navira really did feel too tired to properly fight back. Any snappy comeback that she might have had for her sister was swallowed up with the yawn she was suppressing in the form of a tight lipped frown. And it was making her feel uncharacteristically grouchy.
"They'll be here soon." She grumbled. "Kira will, anyway. Kira's never late." But even as she said this, her dark eyes were scanning the room, suddenly aware at Nahara's mention that her own cadet should have been here by now. Navira had always admired the youngster's punctuality. But no, Nahara was right this time. None of the apprentices had made an appearance yet.
Navira shook her head to clear away her sister's mocking doubts and repeated firmly, "We'll see 'em soon. You just watch."

Likal’s mornings were often spent awake before others and tucked away into his own little room. He could take stock of what herbs were running low, despite few canna ever needing them now that Lendri and Hara were on the right side of healing. He could probably send his eager apprentice out on a herb run, maybe accompany him to make sure his previous zeal for poisonous plants didn’t get him in trouble.
Instead, he found himself called to the large communal room, where most dogs were waking up and receiving their daily orders. He hoped that Navira knew by now to just leave the collie to his own devices. Unless there was something truly wrong, Likal was more of a loner and was much happier to decide his own tasks. He was about to turn back to begin his day when the voice of Nahara stole his attention. While he didn’t have nearly the same relationship that the Chief’s sister had with the chief compared to his siblings, he could appreciate the sarcastic bickering between the two of them that he shared with Udu’e and Bimori.
He watched, more like eavesdropped, as the two went back and forth until he heard Navira’s proclamation that Tavi’s three ren and their pet frog would soon come bounding through the corridors. That’s when he realised that he hadn’t actually seen Lendri’s over-eager face hovering over his shoulder this morning yet. Leaning his weight back, he stretched out his shoulders in the proper downward dog before moving towards the two siblings. “Lendri’s usually on top of me like yanya in the mornings, but I haven’t seen him yet,” he yawned. His snout swung towards the corridor where his own little pocket of privacy lay, wondering if a little white hound would poke out soon.

Nahara blatantly ignored her sister’s clear signals that she was getting fed up. A chief secure in herself, her abilities and her reputation would not get so flustered over challenges to her authority. It provided little satisfaction getting under Navira’s skin if her only response was holding back a wide yawn, Nahara thought with a bored thump of her tail.
Likal’s interruption was welcome and Nahara greeted him with a respectful nod. Her eyes narrowed when he announced that Lendri hadn’t bothered him yet and the morning was growing old. Her sister’s defense of Kira was falling on its face, too, when no sign of her cadet came on time.
”This tardiness is inexcusable,” Nahara said after a tense pause, ”especially Li’Navira’s cadet.” Interrupting the remaining canna’s breakfast, Nahara tipped her head back and let out a long howl. When she was sure she had the attention she was calling for, Nahara announced, “we’re missing our cadets. Go search the surrounding rooms for Tavi’s litter and report back once you’ve found them.” She side-eyed her sister, daring the chief to call off her command. kagney@adox

Summoned by Navira and Nahara's conversation, the merle healer Likal'e approached...and with him the chief's heart skipped a few beats. So Lendri hadn't been seen either. Likal was right. Navira knew the ren about as well as her own cadet and it was very unusual for him to not be present and pestering the healer with questions at first light. It was why Navira had asked that particular youngster if he'd like to be a healer in the first place.
Navira started to answer the big collie, to ask him when he'd last seen the pup, but Nahara was faster. Navira's ears flew forward in shock as her sibling gave a summoning call - Something that should have been reserved for the chief herself, or at the very least their general if they had one named yet.
It only got worse from there. She was giving orders now? That would not do. Navira felt a growl bubbling in her throat. Her lips twitched in the beginnings of a snarl - But she knew better than to explode or snap. It was exactly what Nahara wanted. She could take her sister on in a less physical way.
She stood up alongside her twin and addressed the listening clan herself, voice high and clear...perhaps a bit too loud, even. She'd definitely be discussing Nahara's defiance later.
"We don't know that yet. They could have just snuck away to play and lost track of the time. It happens sometimes. There's no need to start making search packs just yet. We'd be better off gathering the pups' mentors first to see if any of them know anything. I'll need to talk to Kukuk, Udu'e and Rah'ki. And you too, Likal."
And then she turned to Nahara and locked eyes with her, giving the other dog a hard and meaningful stare before giving a firm command.
"Go and fetch them, Nahara. Tell them that the chief would like to talk."

Normally when Rah'ki slept in the same room as the other Why'o canna, he was easily woken. At the first stirrings of the sleep pile, he's already awake. He still couldn't bring himself to actually JOIN the sleep pile, but the point is, he's usually a light sleeper.
Being awake all night though had wreaked havoc on his usual routine, and the sleeping room most of the Why'o slept in was already mostly empty upon his waking. And it wasn't even a calm, simple waking either. Somebody was howling a summons, and Rah'ki was already up and stumbling before realizing that wasn't Navira's voice.
Alarm had him fully awake by the time he was tripping over his own paws into the big room with everyone else, and he whipped his head around to see what's been happening. Nahara and Navira were never a good mix when together, and they seemed too close to fighting for comfort. "I'm here!" he called, padding up to Navira's side. If that was him taking a side, nobody would know or care. "What's happened?"

Nahara caught her sister’s agitated snarl in her peripheral vision, that warning flash of teeth seen so often before a true fight occurred. Her head snapped to the side, prepared to meet it with her own lip curling back, but Navira was standing now and barking over her orders. Nahara’s ears laid back against her skull when their eyes locked together, shattered ice and dark, rich earth, and Navira gave her a steely order. Fighting back the demon urging her to snap a defiant refusal, Nahara had no intentions of damaging her reputation with all attention on them. So she agreed with a low, whistling, “yes, Li’Navira.”
She rolled her shoulders and willed the tension to release along her spine. Rah’ki’s sudden, half-alert appearance knotted it right back up - especially when Nahara noticed his intentional proximity to Navira. “I see tardiness is a vice Haka’s mentor shares,” Nahara said coolly, “maybe we shouldn’t worry about Haka after all. He could’ve spent his sleeping hours chasing after lightning bugs and puppy love and snoozed through breakfast, too.” She paused, glancing over Rah’ki with clear contempt, then tossed her head to the side.
“I’ll fetch Kukuk.” A welcome departure from her current company, though she wouldn’t consider Kukuk good companionship, either. Shiftless and lacking in ambition, he clashed with Nahara’s natural drive and desire for authority. kagney@adox

I know every rock and tree and creature Has a life, has a spirit, has a name Kukuk had, like most mornings, found himself awakened with the sounds of the early morning outside of the prison walls. The soft lights that had sparkled through the high windows mixed with the drifting sounds of the bird songs always brought him to an awakened state. It was just in his nature to get up and greet the morning and all that it encompassed.
Being blissfully unaware of the political struggles happening inside, the husky mix had spent his morning basking in the rays of the sun, enjoying the warmth and the promise of a bright and sunny day. Though Kukuk would never admit it, he did enjoy the brighter days that accentuated the colors of the landscapes and world around him as well as bringing about the life-filled surroundings.
Having gotten a good morning nap under the bright blue of the sky, and giving himself a good stretch, the ele'canna decided it was time to head inside and grab some breakfast with the rest of his clan. It was not that he enjoyed the solitude of the mornings - quite the opposite. In fact, Kukuk often wished others would arise as early in the morning as he himself did to enjoy the spectacle of the sunrise and enjoy the dewdrop-riddled foliage. Morning dew fascinated the canna. Where did it come from? Did it secretly rain once all canna had fallen asleep late at night? Or perhaps the gods meticulously placed each drop every morning just to add a bit more of that magic feeling in the morning light? He was certain he would never know the real answer, but it was always fun to speculate - even if the other Why'o canna looked at him like he was crazy for saying such things out loud.
With his jaw hung open and his tongue lolling lazily from the side of his mouth, he padded down the corridors of the prison towards the cafeteria. His tail was held high behind him - a sign of his positive mood. Trotting along with his head bobbing from side to side as if it were completely empty, he failed to slow himself when turning a corner and found himself bumping directly into another canna. The impact was enough that it may have left some others of the clan apologizing, but Kukuk was just happy to run into another familiar face.
With a wag of his tail he exclaimed, "Good morning Nahara!" before once again stepping closer towards her. If there was any signs of annoyance on her end, he was blissfully unaware. His lack of personal space was very telling as he padded up to her and sat down directly at her side with his shoulder pressing into her. "Have you been outside this morning? The sky is beautiful today."
His ears perked up as the sound of heightened voices from the cafeteria reverberated from the concrete walls. Turning his head to the side with his signature wide grin he tilted his head back to look at her. "What's going on in there?"

She had started her morning early. The Shadowspeaker had squirmed out of the sleep pile as the sun's first rays poked through the shattered windows. Her days always started early and today was no different. She'd made straight for the outdoors to gather some herbs before the rest of the clan would start wake. With the task completed, she'd turned her attention to checking in the clan's members. The fact that her cadet had not joined her did not bother her initially. Udu'e chalked it up to the ren not having awoken yet.
Her assumption was proven false when she found her cadet missing. While most of the canna were in their usual spots, some were not. Concern twisting her features, she sought out chief Navira. Udu'e found the Why'O base already filled with noise. Nothing unusual for the Why'Os. But a tension in the air indicated otherwise. She arrived in time to hear Li'Navira instruct Nahara to fetch some canna and see Nahara leave. Rah'ki and her dear brother were already present. A fact that brought some relief.
Uusually, she would take the time to greet each member individually, but unease took her paws straight to Li'Navira. Udu'e typically gentle smile was strained as she addressed the chief. "Li'Navira. Apologies for the lack of greeting. From the crowd, you may already be aware." The collie's ear flicked nervously. "I cannot seem to find my cadet." The Shadowspeaker glanced over the gathered canna, noting again the lack of rens. It seemed Kitchi wasn't the only one missing. Mentally, she chided herself. She needed to calm at a time like this. It wasn't becoming of the Shadowspeaker to give in to worry.
