Lendri was far too young to understand how drastically the world was changing. All he knew in his barely-aware mind was that his mother and siblings had left the comfortable place that he had known all of his life and gone somewhere cold and smelly. Even his own mother had seemingly taken on a different scent - He wouldn't understand enough to detect that these smells were fear and grief. All he knew was that even in that scary place, his mama always came back to feed him and keep him as warm as she could. But then his little world became even more confusing when everything around him had shaken him right off of his tiny feet. He hadn't been able to get up and no matter how he called for Mama, she did not come. Instead, he was scooped up roughly by a stranger and carried quickly through the shaky place. At some point the stranger tripped and dropped him, resulting in a scrape on the end of Lendri's little pink nose. He had cried loudly, been picked up even more roughly (this time by his fat little rump so that he hung upside down in a very undignified way) and finally carried to a "safe" place where Mama and one of his siblings were.
He had sought his mother's paws out on wobbly legs but fallen over again, for the world was still trembling around him. And then Mama was gone and he was left to huddle under a bush on frosty ground with his brother until the shaking stopped altogether.
Just about as soon as the world stopped shaking, it was forgotten. Lendri, being not quite a month old, had more important things to worry about. Like, why was everything so cold? Where was he? Where had his mama and his sister gone? He focused for a while on huddling close to the roll of fat that was his brother, sharing the other pup's comforting warmth. Every great now and again a whimper would escape him, an attempt to call on the Mama that had all but disappeared. Eventually though, his infantile curiosity got the better of him and he began to peek around with bleary, beady eyes at his surroundings.
He and his brother were hidden within a wall of brown leaves and frosty sticks. Underneath them, leaves crunched in a curious, pleasant way that felt good on Lendri's wide baby paws. He wiggled his toes and stomped clumsily, making the leaves rustle loudly. Then he bent and licked one into his mouth, hoping that it would satisfy some of his hunger. It wasn't long before his small chubby face was scrunched up in disgust and his tongue shot back out, trying to remove the pieces of dead leaf that clung there. That was definitely not food.
He resorted to snuggling with his sibling again and finally found a floppy ear to suckle on. It wasn't much, but it was better than leaves and it smelled a little like his mama's tongue. Sorry, Haka.
