"AND THOUGH HE IS BUT LITTLE, HE IS FIERCE!"
|
| As Huli sat upon a stump at the border between Rith'r Flik and Why'o territory, he thanked the Gods above that the weather, for once, was decently dry. He'd been instructed the day before to wait here for a pre scheduled Why'o mentor and their mysterious cadet that needed identification one way or another. If it were raining, he'd be soaked to the bone by now - As they were quite late.
Even thinking back on Li'aba'chek's explanation the day before lent him to shaking his head in dismay. The last few moons had caused the general to question his very grasp of reality. Missing pups, found pups, entire clans and territories disappearing like a cursed magic trick...
When Li'aba had told him that they had possibly found a second pup from Kanya's pata, he'd been shocked. There was no way! And yet...there was Kanya, a pup who had appeared like a ghost and made herself at home in Rith'r Flik territory months after her "death." Of course it was possible. The idea was both exciting and frightening. As much as he had adored Kanya's mother and father, he felt that one of her was plenty.
Suddenly the scruffy general's floppy ears flew to attention, golden eyes widened, and he found himself sitting up straighter in anticipation as he heard canna crashing through the brush. It was time!

Pale paws moved leisurely atop the foliage of the forest floor. The husky held his head high in a way that one might interpret as pure confidence, however, those who knew him better would have commented about how his head always was held upwards towards the sky as if it were full of air and trying to escape. He was neither in a hurry, nor was he procrastinating. He simply moved to the beat of his own drum.
Today, however, Li'Navira had sent him off on a "very important mission." She had explained it to him, but it had gone in one ear and out the other thus leaving the canine without a real clue of why he was doing what he was doing.
As friendly as the husky was, he was not a fan of the Rith'r Flik clan. He had been out on exactly one patrol in the forest with them and they didn't seem to like him much. Constantly yapping and wanting things to get done - not done in any specific way, just done at all. The small canines did not seem to be a fan of his more laid back approach to life. No, he preferred to do his "patrols" alone and his own way. But the chief had given him his orders - to bring his apprentice and meet with one of the Rith'r Flik canna for.... reasons? He forgot. Hopefully his ant companion would know what they were supposed to be doing.
Wait... speaking of his apprentice... Kukuk's features shifted into that of pure attention as he glanced back over one shoulder. Where was she?! His ears folded in a minor feeling of panic before he glanced behind his other shoulder to note- there she was. Slowing his own pace, he allowed for her to catch up more easily on her shortened legs before continuing on in his dopey manner.
Bursting through the brush on the forest floor he came to face to face with the little, Rith'r Flik dog. "Greetings hali!" he stated with a smile and a wag of his tail. The inflection of his tone left it up for interpretation whether he had referred to the canna as "friend" or simply mispronounced his name. However, had Kukuk been told this particular ele'canna's name he could not recall it. "We are here...! ...For that thing...! ...We were sent to do!"

The clouds were almost as dark as Kukuk's fur, and the little ren was dearly worried about rain pouring down any minute and turning the lovely forest ground into a horrible sludge of mud. Her mentor walked slowly, which while it was appreciated, was slow even for her little legs! If it weren't for the lovely scenery she would be bored out of her mind. Alas, she was instead just worried about what this was all about. She was told that she was going with Kukuk to meet with some... ants? She really didn't understand why dogs would talk to ants, but if Li'Navira said it then it must be true! The General of the ants, what an exciting title! Would they be even shorter than her? Well surely they would have to be if they were ants, the little bugs are so teeny tiny that she could only see them if she looked really really hard for them.
Instead, she came across a dog, short in stature like herself, with a quite odd tuft of hair atop his head. Kukuk greeted him as hali, so maybe they had met before? Li'Navira had mentioned that their clan would go on joint patrols in this forest, with... OOOOH! Rith'r Flik was the clan! Oh well now that made sense because their general was so short! Geez, Haka'far was going to love to hear about this! She stood squarely beside her mentor, not really knowing what to say. The Why'os didn't have a general, but she figured that this canna should receive the same amount of respect as Li'Navira. She didn't really have anything that she knew to say, so instead the little pup opted for a dip of the head to show greeting and respect for the esteemed general of the Ants.

| And then she was there. The foliage parted to reveal two dogs - One clearly Why'o, long-legged and confident. The other was much smaller, less sure of herself. A tiny little brown ren with the look of Rith'r Flik radiating off of her. The bigger dog greeted him, but the only response that he gave in acknowledgement was a flick of one ear in his direction. His eyes were for Jarri. Just as Mouse had said about her sister, Kanya, she was the ghost of her parents. Well - One of them anyway. He hadn't seen this ren since she was a toddler, but he still knew right away that she was the one they'd been looking for.
He leaped from his perch to get a closer look, nodding his own head in greeting as she bowed her own to him. And she was polite, too! Nothing like her sharp-tongued sister.
He started down at her for a moment, eyes alight but jaw set firmly, the very appearance of a rough and war-torn general...until he wasn't. All at once his joy broke through and he was grinning hugely from ear-to-ear. He felt almost tempted to pull the little one into a hug, but she seemed scared enough as is.
"So." He began, still smiling. "You're Jarri'hin. It's so good to finally meet you again! I'm Li'aba's Rali'canna. My name is Huli. I'll be honest with ye, I thought Rumblier had brought the spirit'a your father back to me when I saw you come through the trees. You're the spittin' image!"

Kukuk's welcoming grin faltered only slightly at the gruff little dog's lack of returned enthusiasm. Finding himself in the awkward position of towering over both his fellow canna, he slowly lowered himself into a comfortable laying position on the ground. The softness of the forest floor against his belly was both soothing and disconcerting as he was more accustomed to the concrete of the prison or human-crafted roads of the town. As easily distracted as he was, the husky kept his head held high in his current position to give off an alert appearance. Should any threat to his cadet be made he would be ready to act - though his instinctive response would be that of de-escalation as opposed to an outright assault.
His tail began to wag as the ant general visually shifted. The wide grin across the odd little dog's face acted as a very telling sight, no words necessary. He addressed the cadet directly and, thus, Kukuk took no interest in whatever it was he was saying. He simply watched without watching. Was aware while also daydreaming. The sounds of the breeze and the smells of the trees enticed his senses over whatever this was that was unfolding before him.
Li'Navira would know more about what any of this meant. But Kukuk? He would just enjoy the day as he did most others.

The strange looking small dog - not that she would ever say it to his face - leaped down to stand before the pair of Why'o canna. He seemed quite scary with his stance and hardened eyes before a big smile burst out onto his face. Jarri's tail began to wiggle slightly with the permission to be happy in this tense new scenario granted. "So, you're Jarri'hin. It's so good to finally meet you again! I'm Li'aba's Rali'canna. My name is Huli. I'll be honest with ye, I thought Rumblier had brought the spirit'a your father back to me when I saw you come through the trees. You're the spittin' image!"
Jarri's meek smile fell a little at the mention of her father. She couldn't really remember him at all... not even his smell. "It's uhm... nice to meet you Huli. Li'Huli? Oh geez, sorry," she trailed off, the nerves coming right back to her despite her mentor's calm presence beside her and the Rith'r Flik general's kindness, "Li'Navira wanted us to meet up with you, but I don't really know why. Is it because you knew my dad?" Her question was hesitant, the anxiety about the unknown expectations of her in this situation being a bit much. Hopefully whatever this meeting was really about could get settled up quickly so she could get back home to play with Haka.

| "No, no." Huli chuckled in response to the pups incorrect use of a respectful title. "I'm not your chief...that's Aba'chek. You can call me Rali'huli. Or just Huli. I'm Li'aba's rali'canna."
And then his smile faltered just a bit, scruffy brows raised, and he tilted his tufted head to the side quizzically. She didn't know anything. Li'Navira had sent the pup and her mentor out here today without giving her a shred of information. He almost scoffed at his own thoughts, but managed to hold it back. Mostly.
"They didn't tell ya anything? Well, I gotta say, Rith'r Flik Clan would be more on toppa things." The general shook his head in dismay.
"Yeah, I knew your dad. And your mom." He said, meeting her gaze with a fond sadness in his own eyes. "Your parents were two of Rith'r Flik's best. The grimm came and stole you and your whole family - Most of our clan, really. When Rozo'ama Akoda happened and our prison collapsed, most of us escaped. But...your mom and dad weren't so lucky. They didn't make it outta there alive. We think they stayed inside looking for their pata, you.
We looked and looked but never found a single one'a you pups. Someone else must have come along and helped you out."
But then the general was smiling again, eager to share the good side of this story with the little pup.
"I never thought we'd see any of you again, but we found your sister a while back and oh, Gods! She is somethin' else. You see this fur on top of my head?" He bent dramatically to show Jarri his mohawk. "It didn't use to be this light. She's giving me grey fur!"
And then, "You gotta come and meet her. And the rest of the clan, too. Everybody last night was celebratin' when Li'aba came in tellin' us that you were alive! You missed your own party, pup."
It didn't occur to Huli at all that the sweet little ren might just want to go back to Why'o Clan. Nope, she belonged to Rith'r Flik and she was going to be elated about finding her birth home. If he could, he'd have swooped her up and taken her back right now, perched atop his shoulder so that she could come home cheering like she'd won the war.

Jarri'hin bit her lip at Huli's correction. The Why'os didn't have a Rali'canna, and she didn't really know how to address one. Well, she did NOW but that didn't make it less embarrassing!! The bite on her lip loosened as her jaw fell open in shock. She had parents? She used to have parents? But now she didn't have parents. At all. Never would again. Tears welled up in her eyes as she realised that she really was all alone in the world. Sure, she had Li'Nariva and Kukuk and Haka and Lendri and Kira and maybe even Kitchi but she didn't have any parents left.
The splashes of the tiny dog's self-made rain slowed only a little as Rali'Huli mentioned that she had a sister, and not only that, but a whole pata of siblings. So she wasn't alone? She had a sister! Like Haka had Kira but her own Kira! And she had crazy magic powers to turn fur grey!!! Hopefully her sister didn't do that to her, she quite liked the colour of her fur. Sniffling away the last of her sudden outpouring of tears, her face fell into a confused frown as Rali'Huli finished. "Come and meet her? Like go visit her? Oh! Then she can come back home with me and meet my friends! I bet she'll love them just as much as I do since we're sisters!" Jarri's tail began to wag again slightly, her innocent, hopeful joy coming back the minute she realised that this was actually another great opportunity to make friends.

| "Well." Huli began with an awkward cough in response to the little ren's misplaced excitement. "Kanya lives with us, in Rith'r Flik Clan, and we like having her around." (Most of the time)
"We were thinkin' that you could come and live with us. There was six pups in your pata, and we've got you and Kanya now...we was hopin' you'd come and help us find the other four so you could all be together for good."
And then his expression was somber again.
"We thought you pups were all gone, but there wasn't a day gone by that we didn't think about all of you. Rith'r Flik is a great big family, and you're still a big part of it. We're strongest when we're together. Li'aba wants to bring you back to our home. Your home, Jarri'hin."

Tan rings surrounding her eyes compressed as a frown fell onto the little ren's face. "But I live with the Why'os? And I don't remember anything before rozo'ama akoda... I don't know. I want to meet my sister and my... four other siblings that haven't been... found? Wait so, my parents are dead, I have one sister but a whole other pata too that haven't been found... and you want my help finding them? I don't know them! I don't know anything! I want to go home, to my home with my friends and Li'Navira and Kukuk and have Kanya meet them!"
The little pup's voice was shrill, panic and confusion clouding her judgement as she started to spiral down the descent of an upset meltdown, "Does this mean I have to leave Haka and Lendir and Kira and Kitchi? What about the family I just got? I was alone for so long trying to make friends and I made friends with the Why'os and they let me into their family and now you're saying that they aren't my family and I have to leave them to be with a bunch of strangers that I don't even remember and I don't want to leave my friends and my mentor and and Li'Navira and the town and the smells and the only nice place I've ever been!!" She cryed shrilly, her run on sentence leaving her gasping for breath in the forest as she sniffled. She didn't like this Huli. He was mean and only brought bad news. The little pup found herself backing up, tucking herself into the crook of Kukuk's shoulder as he lay on the ground a short distance away. He could protect her from this. She didn't know that his head was filled with clouds, but in her eyes, he was her best shot of keeping her life the same.
