Lendri was grumpy this morning. He had woken at dawn to the now somewhat familiar sounds of Grair'far hounds loudly waking and throwing themselves into their work in and around their sprawling mansion home. These dogs were never late to anything, it seemed. They reminded the Why'o pup a lot of his own clan...and that made him even grouchier. It had only been two days, but he already missed waking up to Navira's summoning howl and Likal's grumpy morning chore list.
The young cadet found himself gritting his teeth as he remembered why he had been severed from his home clan. Haka'far. His big-headed brother, believing that he was some kind of hero, had led Lendri, Kitchi-Kitchi, Jarri, and Kira away into the forest under some misguided runaway scheme...that none of them were in on.
They'd been scooped up by a strange clan and "adopted" into Grair'far against their will. Or - Against everyone's will but Haka's. He seemed fine. Or at least, he seemed fine from a distance. Lendri hadn't spoken to his brother in days. He did his best to avoid the red-and-white pup wherever possible.
In fact, that was what he was doing right now. Sneaking out into the front yard of the mansion on the tail end of all those other strange, loud-but-not-in-a-why'o-way canna so that his brother wouldn't try to take the chance to speak to him. He wanted nothing to do with that pup.

The events of the last couple of days had been... hectic. The eti'uru that was once full of joy and excitement had turned to exhaustion and dread, then fright and terror, and now? What was it now? She wasn't exactly scared anymore of these Grair'far dogs. They were loud and a bit much, but only a little more than the Why'os. Their braying howls were nothing like the beautiful Why'o howls of back home. Maybe what she was feeling was hurt? Not outside hurt, other than being a little hungry and having sore paws for a day, but an inside hurt. Her Li'Huli had lied to her, to everyone! Lured them away like she was sure some motherly figure had once warned her not to follow. How was she to know? He was her friend! He was practically a brother to her, and yet here she was away from home.
Then again, she was already going to be taken away from her home. Rith'r Flik was apparently her "true home," but she wasn't sure how much she believed that. She had no home, and then the Why'os found her and took her in. Why didn't the Rith'r Flik find her first? The young pup didn't have much of an idea about just how far the Why'o territory spread, but surely if those loners had found her before, someone from her so-called family could have too!
This morning seemed to start like every other, with Li'Eliri sending the hounds bounding down the steps of the large house and out the door to seize the day. She had to admit that Grair'far's pell'galu was much prettier than the kinda scary prison that she called home, but she definitely still wanted to return to it. The little ren had decided to give the bigger, much leggier Grair'far canna an unneeded headstart so that she didn't get sent flying down the stairs. The only one who seemed to not be so eager to head down was a basset hound who shared her body-to-leg ratio. Finally making her way down the stairs, she spotted Lendri lingering out the front. He hadn't been doing well recently, and Jarri felt like she owed it to her friend to check up on him. Sitting down gently next to him, the short pup rested her black head against his pale shoulder. "Are you... okay?" she asked softly, tentatively probing into his mental state when she knew the answer would be no.

If Lendri had been startled by the approach and touch of his clanmate, he didn't show it. The once jumpy, lightfooted youngster had lost quite a bit of his twitchiness these last few days. Even after Jarri questioned his mental state, the cadet didn't respond. He simply peered silently down the stairs at the dogs gathering below. And then he shook his head. No, he wasn't okay.
For the first day or so, he had been angry with Jarri too. Convinced that she had schemed with Haka'far and led everyone astray alongside him. But then the black-and-white pup peeped out of his own bubble of horror and realized that she was just as confused as himself. Haka had done all of the planning on his own. He'd tricked them all.
"No." He finally muttered, flattening his ears back against his head. "What about you?" For a moment that old spark flickered in his brain and he stood a little straighter, alighting a thousand questions for Jarri about how she felt to be betrayed, whether she was happy with this arrangement and if she still considered Haka'far a close friend. So many questions. But just as quickly as it had come, the light fizzled again and Lendri's shoulders sagged again. Maybe later. Maybe, if anything, Jarri could lead the questioning this time. She was the one who had approached him, after all.
