"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"
|
| It would seem that all of Why'o Clan was huddled together in the big mess hall. Navira lay sprawled out on the cool concrete floor with a clanmate flanking either of her sides. Despite the thunder shaking the windows outside, she felt comfort in knowing that all of her clan was here. Most seemed to feel the same, but she noticed a few youngsters flinching when the thunder boomed. Her heart went out to them. They hadn't yet experienced a thunderstorm like this. Well...not that they would remember anyway. Suddenly, her dark eyes lit up with an idea.
"Aw, come on now." She called out to the younger dogs, beckoning them closer. "You've been through worse storms than this. Oh, you don't remember? Well, you did! You've heard us grown-ups talk about Rozo'ama Akoda right? You guys all survived that."
She raised her voice, inviting the rest of the clan to perk their ears for her story. "Come on over here and I'll tell you all about the time the Gods shook the mountains apart."

| Lendri felt like he was being singled out. The youngster ducked his head with embarrassment when the chief pointed out how nervous the storm was making him. Well - Maybe a few of the others were pretty nervous too, but Likal had been scolding him in particular for wearing all of his emotions on his face so she must have been mostly talking to him.
Plus the storm really was making him nervous. Despite being surrounded by a gaggle of family and friends, the rattling windows and shrieking wind were all he could think about. He knew that some of the other human buildings had caved in recently under the weight of snow and water. Who could say that theirs wouldn't do the same thing?
But his wilty ears perked up when Navira beckoned everyone forward for a story. He'd spent his whole life hearing about the terrors and aftermath of Rozo'ama Akoda, but never the way Navira described it. Curiosity quickly beat out his nerves and he scooted forward on his rump to get a good seat in front of her paws.

Thunder rumbled the world outside, threatening to burst through the glass windows of the Why'o's home base. Haka'far's tall ears flipped back and forth from their upright position to flat upon his head at each crack. When standing upright they were constantly twisting to find the source of the sound until startled back by the sky barks. He could feel himself quivering in an unintentional, physical response. Taking a breath, he forced himself into as calm of a demeanor as he could muster. He couldn't, of course, afford to lose face around his peers - especially amongst his siblings. They looked up to him, after all.
The voice of Li'Navira caught the young pup's attention nearly immediately as she spoke out. Glancing about the room he noted the familiar pale figure of his younger brother and approached him in a feigned confidence. Sitting next to his sibling, he nudged Lendri with his shoulder. The act was intended to be both an indication of his boorish personality as well as a reassuring touch towards his brother. Lendri always was a soft soul - as annoying as he could be. Although he'd never let them know it, Haka'far loved his siblings dearly and hated to see them in fear. If anything, he strove to boost their confidence through a show of his own self-assuredness.
His tail wagged softly as he sat at attention, looking forward to hearing the tale Li'Navira was about to share with them and offering himself as a shoulder for his younger brother to lean on.

In her time with the Why'o Clan so far, the prison was the scariest part. A lot of it was dark, and it made weird creaks and groans in the night on its own, and it echoed the classic Why'o howl so well that she was still a bit startled whenever she heard it. She was definitely getting better at it though! Jarri enjoyed practicing her Why'o howl with the rest of the clan, even if her little voice box made it more of a high-pitched long yip. Tonight though, the gods had seemingly decided to give her a new test. A storm over her home made even the most familiar room seem incredibly scary! The rain whipping the walls and the booming crash of thunder after the sparks of lightning were all very new. Frankly, she was hoping all the scary mean weather would be gone by the morning. She was tucked away in a corner, huddled in the warmth of an old blanket when she heard Li'Navira's voice echo through the walls like her own clap of thunder.
The time the Gods shook the mountain apart? Well, that sounded just as scary!! But... it did seem like everyone else would be there... and being around everyone else was much better than being all alone in the scary! Sucking in a short breath, Jarri wriggled out of the blanket and darted over to Navira's voice. The humidity and heat made the blanket quite uncomfortable, but at least when she was buried in it she felt safe. Darting across the prison floor she felt so exposed that lightning may as well zap her right on the tail! Salvation came in the form of her clanmates as she rounded a corner. Lendri and Haka'far were already there sitting next to each other. Thank goodness! The three siblings were the same age as her, and she didn't mind the fact that they already were so much taller than her. She would grow up someday too!
Jarri'hin scampered over to Haka'far, happy just to sit next to a friend. The Why'os really had been her saving grace for finding friends! Everyone was so nice and she fit in so well! "Hi Hak-EEP!" she exclaimed as a loud boom of thunder scared the life out of her. She practically flew off the ground with how hard she flinched! Tears began to well in her eyes but she sucked in her bottom lip determined not to let them fall. It was just some thunder, and it was outside! She could handle it! The little ren hadn't even noticed that she had curled up against Haka'far's skinny side until his breathing shifted her. "Oh geez sorry! I don't like the thunder," she admitted quietly, scooching slightly away before another boom sent her the few centimetres back. Hoepfully Li'Navira would start this story soon! She needed something to distract herself from the gods fighting right outside.

| The mottled chief broke out into an inviting grin as the others slowly began to creep in to listen to her story. Already the atmosphere felt warmer and more peaceful for all the familiar bodies tucking themselves around her with ears perked. Her gaze fell upon a few of the young ones.
Haka'far from Tavi'elu's litter. Even though he was clearly shaken himself, he put on a brave face for Lendri to keep spirits high. She met his eye and gave him an encouraging nod.
And then the jumpy little newcomer, Jarri'hin. Navira found that she really liked this funny little ren. It wasn't every day that an outsider joined the clan and tried as hard as Jarri did to integrate themselves in every way they could.
"Jarri, did you know that the world was made with thunder?" She addressed the little pup gently, and then once again raised her voice so that everyone could hear. "In the beginning, there was no earth under our paws. There were only the heavens where the great Canna Rot'zo lived. He created us by barking so loudly that the sound of it shook pieces of the heavens loose. They pieces fell and made our world. When we hear thunder, we're hearing Rot'zo's bark, just like the day of creation."
She stopped again, looked around at all the different faces peering back at her, and continued.
"Rot'zo didn't just shake down pieces of the heavens the one time though. He did it again four blinks ago...and you were all there. The world was getting way too crowded up with humans and canna and all kinds of other things pushing each other around for territory and stuff. And then the humans gathered us all up and decided that they were going to get rid of us once and for all...They were going to lock us away forever like Restephus himself. That was the last straw. The Gods decided to have a big meeting because something needed to be done to save us canna from a punishment we didn't deserve..."

- THE SUN'S CHILD - From her position on the floor. Ears perked listening to the thunder. She glanced nervously around the room she had previously been napping in. With one final glance out the window she rose and sniffed the air. Underneath the coiling scent of rain she faintly smelled the fresh scent trails of her clan mates. Her body relaxed from its tense and alert posture. And she trotted towards the scent. Though it took a few moments of her finding only empty rooms before she located her clan-mates (the ren had never claimed to have the best nose).
Peeking her head into the next room she saw the collage of pelts sitting around their Li'canna. Her ears perked as she saw her brothers among them padding over and plopping down on Haka'far's other side. Leaning into her brother slightly. Kira had only caught the tail end of Navira's story but she was already enraptured. Whispering to her brothers as to not interrupt.
"What did I miss?"

"ARE YOU SURE THIS WATER'S SANITARY? IT LOOKS QUESTIONABLE TO ME!"

| It wasn't long before Lendri felt the comforting presence of his brother fall in at his side. He turned to Haka'far with a smile and a wag of his feathered tail. Before long there were others, some that he knew well and some that he had only briefly met - Like Jarri'hin, Haka's miniature newfound shadow.
There was a bit of commotion among all the pups as another crash of thunder jolted everyone to attention. Jarri yelped and threw herself into Haka. Lendri murmured an exclamation of surprise in an effort to calm his own racing heart. A few others whispered in frantic tones to one another that they could definitely feel that one.
But Li'Navira wasn't shaken at all. In fact, she used it to begin her story.
Before Lendri knew it, he was leaning forward, eagerly hanging onto the chief's every word. In his mind he imagined what Canna Rot'zo might look like as he stomped around in the heavens barking as loudly as he could. What had made him bark in the first place? How come he was barking right now?
He was only pulled away from the awe-inspiring tale of creation when another red furred pup appeared at his brother's side. Well - Kind of quietly. He leaned around Haka and whispered as quietly as he could given the distance between them -
"We're learning how the Gods saved everyone from Rozo'ama Akoda. But shhh!"

Red tipped ears folded back at the following crack of thunder. Haka found he was holding his breath to keep from shaking. Glancing down at his new clan mate and friend, Jarri'hin, he gave her a reassuring nudge in response to her apology. There was no need to be sorry. All of the pups were scared. All that is, except for himself. The bravest of the bunch, that was for certain.
He listened intently as Navira started to spin the tale of creation. And then... they were all there? His ears twitched as he tried to think back. He couldn't seem to recall what Li'Navira was talking about. No, he did not think he had been there. She must have been mistaken. He shook off the questions that rolled within his mind and sat up straighter, his ears pointed forward as she continued the story. That is, he was paying attention to the story until he felt another pressure against his side. Glancing over he noted Kira had joined the small pile of puppies. He had to restrain himself from shushing his two siblings as they whispered back and forth.
Navira paused briefly in her story, enough for the pup to feel confident jumping in with a question. "But were there any canna who did deserve it? What about them, though?" he asked. His brown eyes darting quickly towards the source of his question. The little mottled bully lay a short distance away from the rest of the pups. His eyes lingered for only a split second before darting back to meet those of the chief. He was not intentionally indicating towards her, but instead couldn't help the instinctive muscle movements of his eyes.

Kitchi had watched as the other pups flooded over towards Lendri. First his brother, then the new pup, Jarri, and finally Kira had made her way over to them. What was with those three? They had even managed to get the tiny, frog-eyed pup on their side. Hadn't she realized how insufferable they were?
She let out a huff of annoyance as she laid upon the cold, concrete floor of the prison. At each clash of thunder she found herself shivering lightly on her skin. The sensation caused her to feel itchy. Pawing at her face, she scraped her claws at her eyes and nose to help clear them out. The humidity of the evening was doing her no favors to her sensitive skin.
The story itself was intriguing, though Kitchi-Kitchi knew she would not like the way it would end. Families like Lendri's would find each other and be happy. While others like herself would be left alone, cold and miserable. Her tail twitched slightly in annoyance. Crawling on her belly, she inched closer to the chief and storyteller, her ears perked to hear better. She'd like to hear the story, even if the ending would not be a happy one for her.
Her head swiveled at the whispering pups. She shot Lendri a sour glance before turning her hate-filled eyes on the eldest brother as he spoke up over the story. They were mocking her again. With a huff she turned her speckled gaze to Li'Navira, pleading for her to call out the trio's bad behavior and showcase her as the shining example of story-listeners. Even if she would get her way now, she knew that, in the long run, the three of them would have joy in their lives. But for her... for her there was no happily ever after.

- THE SUN'S CHILD - A quiet "Ooooh" left her at Lendri's words. Before she. as instructed. shut it. How exciting! Kira couldn't help feeling interested by the subject matter. It had been one of the first things she had experienced. Even if she didn't exactly remember it. She felt her tail begin to wag behind her at the revelation. Now she could hear it in full! Even if it was from somebody else's mouth and not her own memory. Another crack of thunder splitting the air outside had her curling inward slightly. Drooping similar to the way Lendri often did.
She glanced at her Haka'far when he voiced his - to her- rather strange question. Giving him a confused glance before tracking his gaze to Kitchi. Causing her to glower as well. While she didn't believe that they had deserved it. SHe simply didn't enjoy the other ren's presence. Due to Kitchi's large amount of unfavorable traits. Combined with how she treated Lendri. What could her sweet brother have ever done to upset them? Kira was also aware that she see seemed to view her unfavorably. Which she was also puzzled over. Glaring even harder when she noticed her shoot Lendri a rather sour glance.

Navira's comforting voice soothed the ren just a little bit. Navira was such a nice leader. Especially now that she knew she was nice! At first, she was a bit worried about the collie, but now she was great! She was here, quite literally surrounded by friends now that Kira and Kitchi-Kitchi had joined the party too! Wide eyes paid attention to Navira completely, transfixed as she imagined huge blocks of the world falling down with the thunder. Did that mean that they lived in heaven right now? If heaven fell down, did that mean that it changed from heaven into their world, or was heaven both right now and after Emle'Rumblier? She came to her own conclusion to her question. This had to be heaven! She was inside, with her family, warm and loved, listening to a story. What could be better than that!
She tilted her head back up to look at Haka'far when he confidently inserted his question into the conversation. She followed his gaze over to see Kitchi was the target of his question. A frown fell onto her face as she poked his paw with her own, "That's mean!" she whisper-yelled to the Ibizan. She hadn't really talked to Kitchi much, since she was often out with Udu'e learning all about herbs like Lendri! She seemed nice enough, and Jarri was sure if she had the chance to talk to her she could be her friend! It was certainly not very friendly to be mean to her, and right in front of the Chief no less! She couldn't do much, but she could at least voice that she didn't think it was very nice!

"LEAD ME NOT INTO TEMPTATION... OH,WHO AM I KIDDING! FOLLOW ME! I KNOW A SHORTCUT!"
|
| Haka's question didn't really surprise Navira very much. It was a question that had been discussed since the day of the earthquake - often by dogs wondering if those who didn't make it had been punished or robbed of a blessing. She was however surprised to follow everyone's glances and see that they were discussing a fellow Why'o here in this very room.
The chief wasn't blind. She knew that Kitchi-Kitchi wasn't very popular among her clanmates. She had a sharp tongue and a tendency to relentlessly pick on the other pups. To go as far as to say that she didn't deserve to make it out of the shelter...that was taking things too far.
Before she had a chance to respond though, Jarri piped up and scolded Haka. Navira couldn't help but break out into a grin at the little one's indignation. The two pups were clearly already very close - If anyone was going to knock some sense into him, it would be Jarri'hin. Whatever the case, the story had to go on.
"There aren't very many canna who deserve to be punished by the Gods and even less who deserve to be punished by Grimm." Navira answered Haka. "There isn't a dog in this room with true restephus'udu, I can tell you that. The Gods knew this. They knew that humans had no reason to punish us for trying to hold our territory. They had seen how we had no place in that world anymore.
So they all got together and decided to make a brand new world for the canna that weren't going to make it out of that prison. Great Canna Rotzo barked and howled and stamped his feet on the world that we were in.
Ridna'kah ran all around and stamped her paws and jumped and played so hard that even the ground under our paws shook. It shook so hard that the walls of the prison started to fall down around us." She paused briefly, eyes alight and smiled all around at the watching dogs before continuing.
"And then just like the first time, the world we were in started to crack and break apart. Some of it made the world that our clanmates outside the building got sent to. Some parts became our brand new world. Rahani'hu and Ridna'kah ran around through the pieces and patched them all together kind of rough-like, but they made it beautiful too. So you see parts of human stuff even though the humans are gone but also the forest and mountains and wild things!
Meanwhile, all of us were scrambling to get out of the prison because we didn't know what was happening. We just knew the world was being shaken all apart! It was the worst storm that any canna had ever been through. There was so much barking and stomping around that we couldn't even stay on our paws.
There were some really brave dogs there that day - There was a canna who helped Tavi get Haka and Lendri outside. And then a whole bunch of dogs that helped free Kira and Kitchi.
When we all got out, the Gods had just finished their work. We were blessed with a brand new world to make our home in. And you know what? So were our clanmates." The chief's tail wagged happily at her rear, feeling like she was now to the good part of the tall-tale that she'd been working on. "They got the other pieces of the world that we left behind. Some say that if you listen really close when we all howl together, you can hear extra voices in there...voices that you might recognize as someone you can't see anymore. That's because Rumblier carries their voices to us himself so that we can hear them again - That's how we know that they're out there somewhere even though we got separated."
And then she concluded her story.
"Another thing that you should always remember is that we're all connected under Ridnah'kah. If you look up at the sky when it's dark outside, you'll see the same pelt stretched out up there that the other world sees. Someday, when Rumblier comes for us, we'll all go to Ridna's pelt and be together again."

Haka'far noticed Kitchi glaring towards the bundle of them through the corner of his eye. 'What is her problem?!' he wondered to himself. Of course, he had never been personally offended by her. He couldn't think of a single canna who had ever personally offended him. But for whatever reason she seemed dead set on upsetting his younger brother. And that wasn't very nice.
The eldest pup of the bunch cringed at Jarri's words. His ears flattened, his eyes widened as he lowered them to meet hers, and his lips pulled back in a sort of surprise at her calling him out. In his current state he could almost be mistaken for Lendri with just how wilted his posture slumped into. He opened his mouth only partly as if to speak, but couldn't find the words. Kitchi was the not nice one! His new friend just didn't know it yet. She was too new. Part of the pup was almost a little happy that Jarri was naive to the mottled bully. At least it meant she hadn't been targeted.
Sitting sheepishly, Haka'far remained quiet for the rest of the story.
Nearing the end of the tale, his posture resumed its typical pose of blind bravery. His red-tinted ears perked atop his head, twisting around the room almost as if he could hear the howls himself that very moment. His jaw dropped slightly as he became enthralled with his chief's words. Somehow, he had always felt that there was someone missing. Someone he had been close to. Someone he had loved dearly.
His eyes glittered at her closing statement.
"Really? All of us? We'll all be together?" His words were hopeful and his tail began to sway upon the floor at the thought of it. "All of the Why'os?! Even..." he paused to think carefully on his next words. "Even dad?"

"ARE YOU SURE THIS WATER'S SANITARY? IT LOOKS QUESTIONABLE TO ME!"
|
| Lendri might have been scared of Kitchi - Like really, really scared of her, and he may have been just a teensy bit grateful that his "big" brother and sister were always there to stand up for him, but that didn't make him feel any less guilty about them picking on her the way they were.
As Jarri vocally scolded Haka, Lendri found himself craning his head to shoot a sheepish, apologetic look in the little collie's direction for all the trouble that was being caused on his behalf. After all...she hadn't done anything yet. Of course, she probably would if she got the chance, but she hadn't yet!
Before long though, Lendri, like all the other pups, was once again sucked back into a magical story about how the Gods had rescued them all from that awful prison. (Didn't they live in a prison right now though? It probably wasn't the time to ask.) His feathery tail wagged at his rear, thumping into everyone in its path until he realized what he was doing and once again ducked his head with embarrassment. Oops.
As they reached the end of the story, he found that his jaw was dropped just like Haka's. Was that why Why'os howled all the time? He'd just thought it was fun! The idea of hearing extra voices in their howls made his heart thump with excitement - And a little bit of worry. What if the voices got crossed and he started howling with someone that he didn't know? Would that be awkward? Would their relatives get the message still?
And then Navira declared that someday, somehow, they'd all get swept away to the stars to be together once and for all, and just as he thought that all of his questions might now burst forth from his mouth, Haka somehow beat him to it. He turned to look at his brother and then back to Navira, dark eyes burning with hope. That was exactly what she meant, wasn't it?

Bi-colored eyes glared at the quartet of pups, two of whom were giving her a look. They had no right! She hadn't done anything to them! And then, as per usually, Lendri followed his siblings' gaze and met hers. What was his problem? What was all of their problems? She literally had just crawled forwards to listen to the chief's story - the same as the rest of them! Turning her merle-coated muzzle towards the trio, yet meeting Lendri's eyes especially, she gave a half sneer. Curling her lip back on the side facing away from Li'Navira she showed her teeth and one fang towards him. Why was he picking on her? Why were Lendri and his siblings out to get her? Why was the world against her?
As Navira began to spin the rest of the tale, everyone's attention soon turned back towards the engaging storyteller, Kitchi included. She folded her ears back and lay her head down upon her paws as she listened to the rest of the story, cringing as she waited for the ending where her family would be lost. Sure, there was no way that their chief would be so disrespectful as to detail the events as such, but Kitchi knew they had happened. She remembered.
Kitchi reached back to nibble on her haunches, scratching an itch that had been driving her mad throughout most of the tale as the story was drawn to a close. Giving the side-eye to her peers she noted how they all seemed to be nearly entranced by their chief's words. Hmph. What babies they were.
Her ears perked upright as the eldest of the bunch threw a question out. The audacity! Oh boo-hoo the ibizan pups lost one member of their little family unit. What about her? What about Kitchi's family? All of them were gone! All of them!
She rose to a sitting position, her expression was full of indignation. Her tail flicked in annoyance as she turned to face them. "That's not fair!" she shouted before the inquiry could even be answered. "What about my whole family?!"
