i'm a boy; no, i'm a man you can't take me and throw me away Sunlight began to peer through the coverage of foliage the band of pups had found themselves in. Haka'far - always in the lead - marched forwards with an awakened sense of purpose. The adrenaline of his deceit had him wide awake and unaware of the drowsiness of his fellow companions as they all began slowly drooping more and more as the sky above grew full of light and the nature of the forest came alive. Birds chirped their good morning songs while many pesky insects began buzzing about, rearing to begin their daily tasks of collecting pollen to bring back to their homes. Had Haka'far had the consciousness to consider it he may have noted that it was much like the ele'canna of the Why'o leaving to bring down game and returning to stockpile it within the prison walls. His mind, however, was stuck on a singular idea - that of Jarri'hin and his masterful escape of the canna he once called his clan mates.
The cadet had not yet informed his comrades of their succession from the Why'o clan. No, not yet. Even the thought of mentioning it caused his heart to race with worry about how they may receive the news. Surely Jarri'hin would be just as elated as he was to know they would all be sticking together, forming their own clan out here in this unknown territory. Kira might be a little bit upset with him, but she'd get over it because he was so kind as to include her. Lendri was just... Lendri. He had no opinion on anything ever, right? So he'd be happy, too. The only one Haka'far was sure would pitch a fit would be the ever-present Kitchi-Kitchi. She had opted to essentially invite herself on their little outing. It wasn't his fault if she didn't know the full extent of his plans beforehand. A small sigh escaped his maw as he rolled his eyes slightly at the thought. Now it seemed they would be stuck with her. She'd have to be a part of his new clan. Even far from home he knew better than abandon one of their own.
Looking down at his li'hali, Jarri'hin, he couldn't help but smile towards her and give a wag of his tail. He turned his head, glancing back at the rest of the rag-tag ensemble of ele'cannara - ensuring they were still following close behind. His tail moved in a wide arch at the sight of them and his smile widened - even though they all appeared to be about to fall over due to lack of sleep - as he continued to trot forward.
Taking a deep breath, he puffed out his chest before addressing them all. "Can't you smell that fresh, new air? Aren't you all glad we decided to do this?" His mind was solely on his own feelings as he lacked any sense of how his siblings, his friend, and Kitchi actually felt towards their current predicament.

Eti'uru was a lot of walking, which she guessed was to be expected. That didn't stop her paws from hurting after hours of walking under the moonlight. The smallest of the motley crew had taken far more steps than her hound counterparts, or even Kitchi! The wagging of her tail had faded from vigorous for the first hour, to a still noticeable wiggle all this time later, but it was clear that Jarri'hin was still only a ren, and it was far past her bedtime.
Despite her feet dragging, she still managed to return her hlei'hali's smile. Somehow, Haka'far was still buzzing with energy. Maybe his rama'jai was secretly stealing the energy of those around him magically? A well-slept Jarri probably wouldn't have had such an unrealistic impossible thought. Right now though? Definitely could be a possibility. "Can't you smell that fresh, new air? Aren't you all glad we decided to do this?" Haka barked his excitement at (what Jarri assumed was) the completion of their eti'uru. The Lancashire heeler mix heaved a sigh of relief, her back paws dragging behind her as she flopped into an almost perfect definition of a sploot on the forest floor. "I didn't know eti'uru took us so far out! I'm going to be totally pooped on my morning patrol with Kukuk. I don't even know if I'll make it back on time! He probably won't mind though, he likes a sleep in..." the shortest cadet replied, her eyes already closing now that her paws had ceremoniously stopped moving. Hopefully both Haka and Kukuk wouldn't mind her having a quick nap here before they headed back?

Kira padded slowly after her friends. Having lost what little energy she had gained from the thrill of sneaking out Kira had slipped from her usual spot near the helm of their merry little band and further toward the back. Taking up a slow, meandering pace. Ears pinned against her head to try and muffle the usually soothing chirping of songbirds. As it only caused a prick of irritation to the now grouchy cadet. Her sour mood caused by being pulled so suddenly from her restful slumber and not getting to return to it after. Though the gentle caress of dawn was welcome warmth for her pelt.
Kira's eyes squinted to block out the first rays of morning light. As she did so it finally dawned on her how long they had truly been out. Though it had felt like hours. She had assumed it to simply be time dilation caused be her tired mind. Letting out a quiet groan, she glanced around to check if anybody was staring at her. Knowing that she would not be able to sleep even if they returned in a timely manner. Kira had decided to take to playing 'how long can I nap standing up before Haka'far notices'. Stopping every few paces to close her eyes. And then bumbling forward after a few moments. Even worse, she had another plight. Kira was hungry. The low grumble emanating from her stomach could prove it. And that meant getting home was now even more of a priority.
Her eyes turned upward as Haka'far finally spoke, shaking her head slightly to clear the fog from her mind. She addressed him.
"Mhm. Real nice. You know where else has nice clean air? Home. Where breakfast is." She grumbled, though it was more grouch than snark in her tone.
Coming up beside Jarri as she also voiced her tired state. Kira simply nodded before settling next to her on the ground. A low yawn escaping her muzzle as she flopped against the forest floor.

Lendri plodded along droopily at the tail end of the group, too far away for Haka'far to see him stop and stare with a bleary, questioning squint. Were they glad they'd done it? Well. It had been fun at first, Lendri had to admit. The terrifying thrill of sneaking past all the snoring ele'canna. The triumph of convincing Kitchi to join the adventure instead of sabotaging everything.
Exhaustion had eventually taken over though and the young canna had found himself plodding blindly along with the others as Haka had dragged them to Gods only knew where. Lendri hadn't much questioned it. Exploring the borders had never been his thing...and when he was scouting the perimeter, his mind was always on a new plant or butterfly or lout-like creature instead of a metaphorical line drawn on the ground.
As the little group slowed to a stop though and began to plop down one by one, a part of Lendri's exhausted mind had begun to sputter back to life once again. Despite his own tiredness, he remained standing beside his sister and Jarri, peering warily up at the unfamiliar forest canopy looming over his head.
"Likal'e doesn't sleep in. So I'm dead lout. And we prolly already missed breakfast." He mumbled, answering both Jarri and Kira at the same time. "We should have been back before sunrise to beat Eti'uru. I don't think we're close to the pell'galu at all." The black and white pup then bent his head to rub a paw over his stinging eyes. He finally gave in to his rubbery legs and flopped down next to Kira. Even as he collapsed though, Lendri wasn't done muttering his worries. "Haka, did we accidentally cross the border? We need to get back on our side before some other canna find us. Likal will not be happy with me if I get eaten by a strange clan."

Chill out, whatcha yelling for? if you could only let it be, you will see Utter exhaustion seized the ele'cannara. It was not just Kitchi who felt it but - by the look of the ever growing pile of collapsed pups - her companions as well. Pursing her lips in a thoughtful manner, her gaze shifted back and forth between the exhausted canna on the ground and the one who still seemed to have a spring in his step. Had she somehow failed to miss Haka'far lacked any need for sleep in their past blinks together? Where was his energy coming from?
Her body was kept at a straight line from her nose to the tip of her tail, ears laid flat and tail held in a confident - yet non-boastful - manner. She was too tired to carry it high behind her. Heck, her skin quivered with surges of itchiness that stung and bit at her flesh and yet she had no will to stop and scratch herself. The weariness of her being left her nearly unaware of the uncomfortable nature of her skin. Her ears perked at Lendri's comments. Oh no! Was he actually making sense?! She must have been really tired!
Allowing her tired legs to give in, she approached closer to the trio and plopped herself down into a sitting position. "Udu'e won't be happy if I'm late for my training. I lost track of which way is home, are we even heading in the right direction? Or have you been leading us in circles?" Unable to hold back her urges any longer, she dropped her head down and began to nibble at the tops of her paws with the front of her teeth. Glancing between the four canna she questioned herself out loud, "Do any of you even have a proper sense of direction?" i act | "i speak" | 'i think' |

i'm a boy; no, i'm a man you can't take me and throw me away Haka'far had barely even noticed as his best friend and siblings had begun to fall behind, exhausted and lying upon the ground, enticed by the sweet suggestion of slumber. A nervous shiver traveled up his spine at Jarri's comment about her daily patrol with Kukuk. Lendri and Kitchi's comments regarding their mentors did not help calm his nerves by any measure. Instead he opted to respond to Kira's biggest complaint. At her mention of breakfast, Haka had become acutely aware of his own empty, grumbling stomach. Closing his eyes he envisioned a katha'chek in his mind's eye. His mouth began watering a bit at the thought as he mumbled to himself, "...breakfast..."
Stopping in his tracks he turned to face his fellows. "We probably did miss the Why'o breakfast so I guess we'll just have to catch our own!" he stated in an excited voice. His tail wagged vigorously behind him as he attempted to rally the cadets together. "Come on u'canna! Let's mufar!" His mouth hung open as his tongue lolled boisterously. His expression only dropped for a moment at the sight of his companions. His siblings and his best friend had collapsed upon the ground and Kitchi... well, she was itching herself - what else could he have expected?
"C'mon you guys, lets go find some lout," he coaxed with a soft whine and short wag of his tail. He dropped into a momentary play bow before pouncing forward and directing his front legs to land on his younger brother. "Likal'e can't get mad at you for getting eaten because I won't let anyone eat you - unless-we-can't-find-any-lout-and-Kira-gets-even-more-hungry. Now let's go."

For the briefest of seconds, Jarri had fallen asleep. Her head nodded down, chin tapping the forest floor before the thumb of Kira brought her back to the waking world. Luckily, Lendri didn't follow the same thumping and she was able to nod off for one more moment before she realised that they were actually talking and not settling down for a nap as she had. Her stomach grumbled at the mention of the word breakfast, practically vibrating her off the ground. Grumbling, the little terrier mix rolled onto her back. Her eyes stayed mostly shut, only squinting to let in the dappled spots of morning light through distant leaves.
For once, she hoped that Haka would actually listen to Kitchi-Kitchi. The young owi in training seemed to be the liveliest of the bunch still, or at least she was awake enough to keep her sharp tongue and annoyed tone in tact. Kitchi really was a wonder. "Mmmmmnf home and breakfasttttt," she yawned, stretching all four legs up towards the sky before finally rolling back onto her feet. Her eyes were even more reluctant to stay open now that she had briefly stopped her momentum. Jarri didn't know about Newton's laws of physics, but if she did, she would really agree that now that she was out of motion, it was a lot harder to get back into it.
Hlei'hali's urging to not only keep going, but to hunt brought a frown to her face. "Haka, I'm too tired! And too hungry! We've for sure completed eti'uru by now, and I think Lendri's right. We can't be good Why'o corporals if we aren't good Why'o cadets and skipping patrols is no way to accomplish that. I'm so so happy we went on this big adventure and I'm really glad that everyone came, but I think that it's time to go home and not get into more trouble," the little ren relayed tiredly. Her words were almost pleading, too tired to think of anything but the pile of canna that they could curl up in tonight when they made it back. Short legs didn't fare well with putting a foot down with much power, but she hoped that Haka would start to realise he was sleepy soon too.

Kira had gone almost entirely still when she closed her eyes. Stretching out her slender legs as she almost sagged into the dirt floor of the forest. Reveling in the feeling of her much needed rest, the only sign of her continued consciousness was the low groan that left her at the mention of missing breakfast. And her freckled ears perked up at the mention of crossing border's. And even more at Kitchi's questioning of their directional awareness. Which earned the mix a sleepy scowl. With a small sigh. She pulled herself up, her slumped posture and glare indicating the dogs displeasure. Though the thought of breakfast had her drooling. And her hunger protested her movements every step of the way. Kira began to trot around their resting place. Sniffing the bases of trees and patches of moss. Only stopping to huff at Haka's statement's. "All our breakfast is why'o breakfast." Kira snorted "And besides, I'm tired and everybody else is to! We won't be catching any lout in the state we're in. Lets just go home, like we have all been saying. We can make up a few excuses for our mentors and find some left-over chek." She said confidently. After Nodding along with Jarri's plead. She returned to her inspection of the surrounding area, a few moment's of sniffing caused increasingly concerned expressions to make their way onto her face. "I think Lendri's right! None of this smells why'o.." concernedly it seemed she didn't even recognize many of the canna scents she was smelling. Maybe Lendri was correct about this a strange new clan.
"Well- not the eating part...hopefully."

If he weren't so darned tired, it might have felt really good to hear so many voices of agreement chiming in on the tail end of Lendri's words. As it stood right now though...he wasn't hearing too much of it. The pup was too busy trying to keep his long nose from drooping right into the ground as he nodded off. How in the world did Haka'far always have so much energy? Even when everyone else was begging to go back home and sleep, he was bouncing around begging everyone to join him in a hunt.
But...yes. Everyone was in agreement. (Except for Haka) It was time to go back home. Lendri gave a great sigh that turned into the biggest yawn ever and stood up once again, legs wobbling just a little, and turned back in...uhm. Hopefully the direction they had come from. Kira's commentary about everything smelling unfamiliar made his own floppy ears sway warily as he peered through exhausted eyes at the tree-laden landscape that blocked his view of home.
Kitchi was right about at least one pup not having a good sense of direction.
"Erm. If we did want to skip the hunting thing and head back home...does anybody know how to get there?"

Trudging through the fallen leafs as his tail wagged lazily behind him. Eliri gazed around the forest as it awoke with the first rays of sunlight. It seemed that while the pups where almost dead on their feet. The chief was bright eyed and ready for the day. Ears perked for any unfamiliar sounds and ready to defend their territory if need be. He turned to look back at the patrol they where leading. Noticing a few lagging canna he let out a loud bark. Trying to startle them awake. Though the clan had not yet encountered many threats. He still felt it necessary to patrol the forest and make sure nothing was out of sorts.
Just as they turned back and trotted forward a few more paces, they suddenly noticed a noise. His ears raised as he tried to tell the location and source of the unfamiliar sound. When he finally realized what it was his eyes widened substantially. Voices! There where intruders in grair'far territory! Letting out a hearty bay to signal his clanmates to follow he sprinted forward. Barreling through the foliage post-haste, his hackles raised and eyes peeled for any flash of fur. The crowd of pups quickly drew his eye when he finally reached their location. Skidding to a halt, he examined the intruders. Eyes roving over them before he squared his shoulders and spoke.
"Intruders! What is your business in grair'far territory?"

Before any of his companions had an inkling of a chance to respond to Lendri's puzzled inquiry. Instead a cacophony of noise erupted, followed by the clear crashing of brush that signaled the approach of a pack of very unhappy canna. Lendri's heart, ears, and jaw immediately plummeted groundward, quickly followed by the rest of him as he attempted to appear as submissive and unappetizing as possible to...whoever that was.
It wasn't long before that last thought was answered when a group of hounds came careening through the brush to stand towering over the bewildered little group.
Lendri's frightened gaze turned quickly to the first canna to speak - A speckled hound with an aggressive, dominant stance. A silence hung in the air after the bigger dog demanded answers, punctuated only by the sound of Lendri's own teeth chattering loudly enough for everyone in this group to hear.
But no one spoke up. Not even Haka. Terrified that the angry dog would simply snap one of them up in his jaws for ignoring him, Lendri forced himself to speak up on behalf of his friends, though he remained hunkered low to the ground as he spoke to this...Grair'far canna. He had never in his entire life heard of Grair'far. It made him realize with yet another sinking feeling that Haka'far must have led them very, very far from home.
"I-we-I-" He stammered briefly before the words came to him. "We were playing, and we were just about to go back home, but we weren't sure what way that is. So if you just um...let us go? And maybe point us back in the direction of Why'o territory? We'll leave and we'll never come back, I promise!"
But the babbling didn't stop there. Nope. Lendri was on a roll, too nervous to stop himself.
"Well. Maybe not playing. Kind of? We were doing Eti'uru. And we were actually supposed to get back home before sunrise, so our clan's probably pretty worried about us right now. And they won't know that we were doing Eti'uru because we've actually done it before, and you're only supposed to do it once, but Jarri here has never done it, and my brother Haka'far wanted her to do it before she went back to live with Rith'r Flik Clan.
Because Jarri'hin was actually born in Rith'r Flik Clan, but she got separated in Rozo'ama Akoda. And then Li'Navira found her and she's been a Why'o for a while now, but Navira thinks she should go back to her own clan and meet her family. Except Haka'far thinks that she should keep being a Why'o..."
And on. And on. It was the only way he could stop himself from crying over himself and his friends - Because they were definitely about to become Grair'far breakfast.

If being cold, tired, and hungry wasn't enough, the appearance of a total stranger - an adult, no less - was the final straw that broke the canna's back. "Intruders! What is your business on Grair'far territory?" the hound barked loudly, snapping Jarri's weary knees to attention. She looked to Haka, whose momentarily (she assumed stunned) silence brought her even more fear. Who would lead their group now? Was there even a good explanation for what they were doing? How could this be another pack's territory when they hadn't smelled huffa? Were they just too tired too??
Tears sprung to Jarri's eyes and her lips started to quiver just before Lendri swooped in and started explaining everything. Quite literally everything. Her only addition to the conversation was whimpers and small hiccups as the tears began to flow. She was too tired to really control her emotions right now, and this stranger had come upon them and yelled at them and was probably going to get them in so much trouble when they got home IF they even got home!!! Her crying joined Lendri's as the weight of truly being apprentices not ready to face the world came down upon the group. "We're so so s-orry, we did-n't know and we ju-st want to go home and we'll get out of your ha-ir and we won't come back!" Jarri wailed, fat tears falling freely from the shortest of the bunch. Hopefully this stranger would have mercy on a group of crying pups.

"Liars! They're liars, Li'eliri. You can tell, look at 'em, they're even makin' up fake words. They never answered your question, neither, did they chief?" The black and white hound known as Sesasi'elu had appeared behind Li'eliri and quickly run round to trap the gaggle of strange pups from the other side. (Though rightfully, there were so many of them that he'd probably never catch a single one if they suddenly decided to split and run for it.) The Grair'far hound stood here now, opposite his chief, glaring down at this half-grown pack of youngsters with his own youthfully white teeth bared beneath whiskered jowls. "They never answered why they were here in Grair'far territory. Eti'uru isn't a thing. They're makin' things up. I say we take 'em home and use 'em as haru bait! What do you think, chief?"
He had to speak up pretty loudly though to be heard over all of that blubbing. The littlest one...good gods!
"What kind of clan lets a bunch of cadets drag a blubbering patayalu ren out into the forest in the middle of the night?" Sesasi gruffed, pawing at his floppy ears. He might not have the best hearing of the clan, but that hurt even his ears!

Endirani yawned as he trudged along near the back of the patrolling pack. What use was such an early morning patrol? They hadn't found anything so why bother. Their time, specifically his, would be better spent enjoying a nice nap or, even better, an exhilarating hunt. When his chief gave a bark to raise their energy, the borzoi rolled his eyes. Unless some aggressive canna or a hungry hali burst through the brush, Endirani saw no need to pick up his languid pace.
Turned out his wish would be granted as Eliri released an alarmed bark. Intruders! Just what he'd wanted. A wolfish grin crossed his jaws as he leapt into action. Due to his large size, in a few short strides, he'd already caught up with his chief despite how far he'd been lagging. Bursting from the bushes rearing for a fight, he stopped short with a dumbfounded face that soon burst into raucous laughter. The so called intruders were nothing more than a heap of mewling ren just barely out of the next. The smallest of them was just about a puddle of tears. "Oh, lay off, Eliri," he laughed, "This bunch couldn't harm an bug." The borzoi's laughter didn't stop. He jabbed his long snout at the one speaking, "This one's going to run out of words if you keep intimidating him." His eyes turned to the one in tears, "And this one's going to become a puddle."
Seeing Sesasi'elu circle around to the other side drew another eyeroll from the large borzoi. Why make such a fuss over a couple of pint-sized ren.
